Glenn's Beginnings

Why I started Challenging Heads ChessI grew up in the ghetto of West Philadelphia. On a car lined narrow street where

beautiful deep rooted tall trees lined the pavements , their roots grew beneath the

concrete slabs. We would skip, jump and trip over 4 feet by 4 feet blocks of cement

where the trees roots forced its way to the surface.. We would play in the street and on

the pavement running up and down, playing basketball, football, and wall ball. On the

corner of our street was a thick wooden light pole, where the street light hung, 25 feet

high. On this pole we hung our plywood backboard and rusted non netted basketball

rim. After football, slap boxing, and wall ball we would play basketball. Our only

interruption were the cars turning down our street. Boy did we have fun!.

School DaysWhy I started Challenging Heads

Chess I was labeled a slow learner in elementary school and placed into special education.

We had a young nice lady come in the school and give us special instructions. I guess her instructions were special because she would speak very slowly and always nodded her head up and down, as if saying, “do you understand now”. I always felt puzzled by these classes. I

would think, OK, I got a 60 percent on the test; it's not bad, I just need to learn the other 40 percent of work. Why do I need to be in this “special class”? These “special classes” went on for awhile. I'm not sure why these classes stopped or when they stopped. Maybe the school

could not pay the special educations teacher any longer?School for me was a struggle, from the 1st grade to the 6th grade. It didn't make sense. The testing, homework, grading. It just wasn't clicking. There were no cohesion, no pattern, no

beauty, no purpose!Just chunks of information.

Until I found chess. Billy Bones a playmate on our block taught me and other kids how to play chess on one steamy hot summer day. I was in the 6th grade.

Page 6: Glenn Chc Slide Show

Instant SparkIntensity. The chess pieces represented energy. Billy Bones showed me the

movements of the Knight, Pawn, Bishop, King, Queen and Rook. I never seen

chunks of wood on that hot steamy day. Their movements made sense. Perfect

logic. My mind was engaged. I was thinking. I realized now that every child has a

unique way of learning. Traditional education was not working for me in elementary

school. I figure that I can't be the only child with these experiences in grade school;

therefore, I started Challenging Heads Chess to help fill the gap that education is not

filling. Not every child is suited for traditional classroom education. At Challenging

Heads Chess we challenge every child to think differently. We encourage every child

to come up with their own conclusions, realizing that the goal in not a correct answer,

but the process in which by they arrived at their conclusion.

Critical ThinkingCritical ThinkingCritical thinking is "a way of taking up the

problems of life.

Recognize problems, to find workable means for meeting those problems.

Recognize unstated assumptions and values.

Critical thinking clarifies goals, evaluates evidence, accomplishes actions, and assesses conclusions.

You are able to determine patterns, make connections and solve new problems.

Critical thinking is a vital skill for a child to learn because it will help them to recognize patterns.

Creat ive T hinkingWhat is Creative Thinking?Creative thinking is divergent thinking:

divergent thinking involves creative generation of multiple answers to a set problem.

Creativity is the ability to imagine or invent something new. Not the ability to create something out of nothing.

Being creative entails generating new ideas by combing, changing, or reapplying existing ideas.

Positive (or negative) mood, or change in mood, predictably precedes creativity.

Creativity is the process of hard work.

Chess is a natural conduit for mental images.

A child must positions and repositions pieces in their mind.

A child must try to see future positions, piece placements.

Plays an important role in memory and thinking.

Calling up an image in our mind can be seen as degrees of conscious control.

Seeing future events without experiencing it can be beneficial

Creative Visualization in sports

In one of the most well-known studies on Creative Visualization in sports, Russian scientists compared four groups of Olympic athletes in terms of their training schedules:

Group 1 = 100% physical training; Group 2 - 75% physical training with 25% mental training; * Group 3 - 50% physical training with 50% mental training; * Group 4 - 25% physical training with 75% mental training. Group 4, with 75% of their time devoted to mental training, performed the best. "The Soviets had discovered that mental images can act as a prelude to muscular

Critical thinking Skills

Positive habits of mind which characterize a child strongly disposed toward critical thinking includes:

Courageous desire to follow reason wherever it may lead.

Open-mindedness, foresight.

Systematic approach to problem solving.

Fair-mindedness and maturity.

Confidence in reasoning.

Strong sense critical thinking requires intellectual humility, empathy, integrity.

Child - intellectual skills alone.

Often results in clever, but manipulative behavior.

Unethical.

Subjective thought.

The important of teaching children critical thinking skills is the basis for a healthy person.

Page 13: Glenn Chc Slide Show

Pattern Recognit ion While playing chess, children are

learning how to recognize patterns

Pattern recognition is an important field of study in math

Pattern recognition is studied in many fields, including psychology, psychiatry, ethology, cognitive science and computer science.

We teach children pattern recognition by exposing them to tactical puzzles diagrams.

By solving tactical chess puzzles, children are learning how to classify, interpret and understand the process of pattern recognition.

In decision theory, we find patterns.

Page 14: Glenn Chc Slide Show

Cognitive AbilitiesDifferent cognitive abilities that can be

trained with chess.

Central Processing Speed: categorize and understand what has been observed.

Conceptual Reasoning: ability to analyze the relationships between objects, the ability to think abstractly, and logic.

Attention- The ability to stay focused on the task at hand.

Working Memory- The ability to encode and hold information, apply it to the task at hand, and respond accurately.

Cognitive spaces can be understood as "work spaces of the mind" .

Mentality Gifted ChildrenDr Ferguson’s four-year study (1979-83)

analyzed the impact of chess on students’ thinking skills in the Bradford Area School District in the United States (grades 7-9)

Using two tests (Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal and the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking) Ferguson (1995

60-64 hours playing and studying chess over 32 weeks students showed significant progress in critical thinking.

Testimonials – Glenn Bady What do parents think about

Glenn?

I met Glenn about 4-5 years ago when he was running an after school program at Penllyn Woods Community Center. Since meeting Glenn, he has guided the children in his club, many of whom have been Upper Dublin kids, to 4 straight Pa. State Scholastic Chess Club Championships and produced numerous individual state champions, including my

on, Charlie, this year. He also took the club to compete in 2 National championships in Orlando & Pittsburgh. All the tournaments they've competed in have included separate sections for school championships. The positive link between chess and improved academics, especially mathematics, is well documented. Many charter & private schools even have have chess as a part of their curriculum. Many college chess scholarships are

Page 20: Glenn Chc Slide Show

Testimonials – Glenn Bady (2)are awarded every year. I could go

on & on. I, like you, grew up in Upper Dublin, and I've always taken pride in our school district. I believe that if we could somehow bring Glenn & his gifted instructors into our schools it would make a great school district even greater. I don't know who to contact in the district on this matter, but I'm sure you might. I think, at the very least, the possibility of such a venture should be explored. I've discussed it with Glenn, and he would be willing

to meet with you & whoever you would deem appropriate to discuss creating some kind of chess program in our schools. As a believer in Glenn & what he's doing, I would be willing to volunteer my time & effort, as well. It's been a very positive, rewarding experience for us & I'd like other kids in our township to get this opportunityI've included today's club update e-mail below & you might consider checking out his website www.cheadschess.com

Thanks, C. Van Orden
