Education Boldon PFI School, South Tyneside 20m Construction of new PFI funded secondary ‘super-school’

The 11,500m2 school caters for approximately 1,1 00 pupils in the 11-16 year old age group In addition to modern school facilities, the scheme has enhanced the existing school's reputation for sporting excellence by providing a new all-weather pitch and multi-use games area, as well as a 25 metre swimming pool together with a gym and fitness suite, sauna and treatment room. The school also features multiple satellite television reception points throughout and these are also linked directly to class teaching facilities for enhanced education. The school has also maintained and developed its close links with the community with the provision of a 200-seat community theatre equipped to stage complex productions.

Cramlington & Blyth Schools Development, Northumberland

52.8m Construction of 5No. new build schemes and refurbishment & extension of 14 existing schools throughout this area of Northumberland to accommodate increased pupil numbers as the county move from a 3 tier to a 2 tier education system.

Northumberland County Council Schools & Educational Services Maintenance and Development Programme

80m This scheme involved a wide variety of projects upon all of the County Councils educational establishments. Schemes varied from simple refurbishments and replacement of heating systems, to extensions, demolitions, infrastructure upgrades & new builds.

Oxclose Secondary School, Sunderland

14m Refurbishment, extension and modernisation of existing secondary school to provide state of the art teaching and sports facilities.

Highfield Primary School, Sunderland 6.5m The construction of a new primary school in a deprived area of

Sunderland to replace the existing pre-war school as part of a major schools regeneration programme. The school also featured a Sedum roof which flowed into an extensive landscaping development to promote ‘coloured area zones’ in the community.

Southwick Secondary School, Sunderland

7.6m The construction of a new Secondary School in a deprived area of Sunderland which features advanced educational, sports and community facilities.

Ponteland First School, Newcastle Upon Tyne

6m Construction of a major new First School and Community & Sports Facilities

The Ponteland First School Redevelopment involved the construction of three separate buildings, a 315 place First school, a changing room block and a fifth form centre for two separate schools on a shared campus. The new build First School replaced the existing school. Outside each class base is a covered external space which enables the children to play outside during bad weather. A nursery is also provided with a separate entrance and play space at the front of the school. Changing rooms In addition, eight changing rooms and two ‘officials’ changing areas adjacent to a new multi use games area these have been created for both school and Community Use. Fifth Form centre New fifth form block consisting of four classrooms and a street area which forms additional teaching and resource space. Separate play space was also provided incorporating an external teaching area therefore enhancing the educational environment.

Seaton Deleval First School, Northumberland

25m The phased redevelopment of a major education establishment. The projects consists of phases of construction followed by decant and demolition works. The end result will be a college which is a fundamental aspect of the LEA’s curriculum delivery, offering modern design and functionality with state of the art teaching and sports facilities.

Blyth Community College 15m

In a striking combination of brick, wood and glass, this landmark building creates a focal point for both students and the local community. A welcoming two storey atrium opens onto a glazed, circular cyber-cafe, whilst a curved, top lit central arcade provides a dynamic and vibrant hub for all college activities.

The building accommodates cutting edge IT facilities as well as a nursery, open learning centre, sports hall, food court, garage and mechanics workshop and 440 seat auditorium.

Northumberland & Teesdale Sure Start Centres

16m The construction of over 30 Sure Start Centres in and around Northumberland and Teesdale to improve childcare and education throughout these areas.

Teesdale Sure Start embarked on a programme of new-build and incorporated centres to provide basic facilities in deprived and sometimes desolate communities throughout the Tees Valley area. Northumberland County Council’s Sure Start Programme was more extensive and advanced, with the majority of centres being new-build facilities directly linked or incorporated into existing schools. These centres were also a mix of traditional construction and pre-fabricated unit installation.

Northumbria University 4m

Several major projects were carried out on the University’s City Campus over the course of two years to improve teaching, student and staff facilities and modernise elements of some of the historic buildings on the site. Works were carried out both whilst the site was ‘live’ with students and during summer vacation time to minimise disruption to normal operations and teaching.

Ellison Building The construction of a new glass extension building to form a new Reception, Entrance and Media Centre for the Ellison building along with associated hard landscaping the the front fascia of the building. Additional works involved the re-landscaping of the central courtyard to provide an open space and walkways with the additional installation of seating and artwork structures.

Trinity Building The complete refurbishment of the historic Trinity 1 Building including strip out, installation of new M&E, ICT upgrades window and insulation upgrades, internal fit out of new rooms and teaching facilities, creation of new staff facilities, essential roof repairs and the replacement of 2No. Heating Boilers.

Northumberland Building The strip out and refurbishment of a number of the science laboratories in Northumberland building, including the removal of all furniture, fixtures and fittings, flooring, the replacement of all M&E, upgrades to the ICT facilities and the installation of new fixture & fittings. In addition, staff support facilities were also upgraded and the false ceilings and trunking in adjoining corridors was also replaced.

Glenamara House Glenamara House is a six floor City Campus based accommodation building. Works consisted of the refurbishment of student bedroom and facilities to provide a mix of standard single bedrooms within multi-occupancy flats with communal kitchens and facilities. In addition a range of newly refurbished higher value bedrooms were created as well as two self-contained apartments.

Health

Newcastle Hospital Biogerontology Unit

The Henry Wellcome Laboratory for Biogerontology Research was created to provide a world-class facility for leading edge clinical research into ageing. The unit is located on the Newcastle General Hospital site, and links with adjacent Medical Research Council facilities. The facility provides 982 m2 of laboratory space including offices a seminar room, space for 2 MRI systems (1 installed in January 2006, 1 planned) and full facilities for clinical MR research.

Redcar Primary Care Hospital 28m

A current PFI project to provide a new community hospital and replacement health centre for four local GP practices.

Accommodation includes consulting and treatment rooms for the four GP practices accessed directly from the main entrance, with a large pharmacy.

The Community Hospital provides 32 inpatient beds in individual rooms with en-suite facilities, as well as inpatient and outpatient therapies, Day Hospital, Diagnostics and Minor Injuries Unit, Outpatients, Endoscopy and Day Surgery Theatres.

Sunderland Royal Hospital Breast Screening Unit

1m The creation of a state of the art Breast Screening facility in Sunderland’s Royal Hospital to enable the PCT to meet the requirements of their Cancer Prevention & Treatment Strategy.

Newcastle General Hospital, Gibside Unit

1m The refurbishment of an existing cluster of hospital wards to provide a modern specialist day care and short stay unit for the elderly and infirm.

Queens Road Surgery 2.5m The construction of a new doctor’s surgery and pharmacy to provide a GP facility on the site of a local Hospital. The surgery will help amalgamate health care facilities in the area to provide a centralised facility for patients from the surrounding areas.

Northern Doctors Urgent Care 950k The internal fit-out of a new commercial building to accommodate a regional out-of-hours emergency doctor’s facility. The facility accommodated a call centre, private consultation rooms, sleeping and welfare facilities, offices and emergency back-up systems equipment.

Rail Pelaw Metro Station 1.3m Prestigious High Risk Station Modernisation on Live Rail Network

The £1.3m modernisation and upgrade of Pelaw station in Gateshead was completed in May 2006, with a vastly improved enclosed waiting area and modern passenger information replacing the previous facilities. The opening of the Sunderland Metro line in 2002 has made Pelaw a major interchange for passengers travelling between South Tyneside and Sunderland, and this project meets their needs. The station has 1.3 million passenger journeys a year, 380,000 of which are people changing trains. The distinctive arched roof and glass waiting area took its influence from the Japanese ‘Bullet Train’ and is a step change in quality and the first of its kind on a suburban station. The ticket area and walkways to surrounding streets have all been upgraded creating a new local landmark.

Rail Training Facility The works consisted of the construction of a railway station and platform to be used as a training facility for the clients of the prison. In addition, sections of track were also installed prior to train carriages being craned into position and additional secure welfare and staff facilities were also constructed..

Residential

The Chalcots Estate, Camden, London

200m Major Refurbishment & Upgrade of 5No.Iconic Residential Tower Blocks

The Chalcots Estate in Camden, London consists of 5No. residential tower blocks set amongst the densely populated suburb of Swiss Cottage in London. The tower blocks were originally built around 1965-1970 and were designed by architect Dennis Lennon. Much admired for their brave architectural statement, the towers have since fallen into a state of disrepair and require extensive internal and external revitalisation. The project consists of the complete replacement of all of the windows on each block, upgrading them to double-glazed UPVC. The external fascias of each block will also be covered with new aluminium fascia panels that are easier to maintain and will improve the overall appearance of the buildings. Internally the upgrade work consists of the replacement of the kitchen and bathroom in each flat along with the upgrade of the entire M&E and telecommunications infrastructure and the revitalisation of each communal area and car park.

West Denton Regeneration, Newcastle Upon Tyne

18m Major New Build Residential Development in Newcastle for the regeneration of the West Denton area. The project covers 3 phases with the construction of a mixture of 200no. 2, 3 & 4 bedroom houses, 2 bedroom bungalows and 2 bedroom flats & apartments.

South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust

50m Established in 2014 to act as the private development arm of South Tyneside Homes, STHVT began its programme of building over 400 New Build social housing across the borough within 5 years, achieving 120 units within its first year. The organisation is continuously acquiring new sites for redevelopment as well as acquiring existing and abandoned properties for conversion and refurbishment. Flagship projects have so far been developed in South Shields, Simonside, Trinity and Jarrow.

South Tyneside Council Domestic Residential Aids & Adaptations Acting as CDM Advisor/Principal Designer on various domestic

adaptations through the local authority’s STAR centre. The adaptations can take the form of anything from the installation of access ramps and handrails, through to DDA accessible kitchens and bathrooms, lifts and stair-lifts and single storey extensions.

Gateshead Housing Company 232m Decent Homes Upgrade Programme

The client has a commitment under Government initiatives to ensure that all of its housing stock meets a minimum standard of quality by 2010. These schemes involve the upgrade of all of the housing stock with the replacement of kitchens, bathrooms, new heating systems, windows, doors, external re-pointing, roofing works, upgrading gas and electrical switchgear and supplies and general cosmetic improvements to the houses and their surrounding area.

Enfield Housing ALMO 260m Decent Homes Programme

The client has a commitment to ensure that all of its housing stock meets the government ‘Decent Homes Standard’ by 2010. In this instance, all of the London boroughs know they are going to fail this target but with the introduction of 9No. ALMO’s they are hoping that an injection of £1.6bn into London social housing will be able to help them meet these standards by 2013. Enfield Housing will have one of the largest shares of capital investment as well as one of the biggest rolling programmes of works.

Regeneration South Tyneside Council 100m Delivery of 365 Regeneration Programme

The Master Plan for the future of South Shields demonstrates how improved links between the Town Centre, Riverside and Foreshore will result in a positive visitor experience, and an altogether more cohesive and functional Town. The project consists of; 1. A new Central Library and Digital Media Centre 2. Provide an enhanced market offer 3. Provide a new central consolidated travel interchange 4. Improve the retail and leisure offer in the town 5. Potential new supermarket Although significant progress has been made towards the acquisition of land, ongoing demolition of existing structures, considerable civils and infrastructure works and the construction of the new Library & Media centre, once complete these projects will result in a Town Centre with stronger connectivity which will enhance the area and encourage visitors to stay for longer.

Conservation

Gibside Estates Orangery and Stables

Gibside was mainly the work of coal baron George Bowes, part of his scheme to create the epitome of an 18th Century English estate. The National Trust team at Gibside has worked towards a phased restoration of the various elements of this important site to bring it back into use for the people of Gateshead. Projects included: restoration of the Grade I* Listed Chapel, new tea rooms, stabilisation of the Grade II* listed Georgian Orangery to allow public access and the award winning restoration and partial conversion of the Grade II* listed stables to provide exhibition and public interpretation space, residential accommodation and a warden's flat.

Woodhorn Colliery Museum, Ashington

6m The project comprised of the restoration of the existing Grade II* listed colliery buildings to provide units with open exhibition space and the construction of a new reception and exhibition centre on the former Woodhorn Colliery site in Ashington, Northumberland.

48 Bondgate Within, Alnwick 1.3m The project comprised of the refurbishment of the Grade II* listed

building in Alnwick to provide 5no. modern residential flats above a retail unit. The property belongs to the Duke of Northumberland and was restored in accordance with its surrounding buildings.

The construction of a temporary custodial module to accommodate additional inmates and increase the Establishments capacity.

Ancillary Works Stages 1 & 2

The project consists of various extensions, re-fits, installations of wiring and equipment and redecoration.

Fire & General Alarms

The project involves the upgrade of the Fire and General Alarm system, with the installation of new wiring looms, secure trunking and call points throughout the entire Establishment.

Window Replacement

This project involved the upgrade of secure windows and doors upon the high risk wings of the prison.

HMYOI Deerbolt Restr. Extension & Refurbishment of D-Wing

Deerbolt is a purpose built Young Offenders Institution, which opened in 1973 built on a former Army Camp in Barnard Castle in County Durham. Deerbolt is a Category C Training Prison and caters for approximately 500 prisoners between the ages of 18 – 21, generally serving sentences up to 4 years in length The D-Wing underwent extensive refurbishment and extension to provide new bed spaces and facilities for new prisoners. Following a major disturbance the wing was subject to a riot and large scale vandalism

HMYOI Wetherby Restr.

High Dependency Unit The construction of a new secure High Dependency Unit with nature lake on the site of the former gardens and agricultural division. The unit will house inmates who require continual surveillance or who are at a serious health risk to themselves or others. CCTV Systems Upgrade Infrastructure Works The project consisted of the upgrade to the prisons entire services infrastructure to enable it to cope with expansion and new houseblock projects Repaint of C&D Wings & 2007 Re-Paint Programme Cell & Fabric Upgrade The project consists of the complete refurbishment of several of the establishment’s accommodation wings to enable the cells to be upgraded, windows and doors replaced and the future-proofing of the facility to support additional and increased security measures. Fire & General Alarm System Replacement This project involved the replacement and upgrade of sections of the establishment’s fire and general alarm system to ensure its compliance with current regulations and improve security in line with the prison’s continual upgrade.

HMP Newhall Restr. The construction of a new reception area to the establishment to provide improved welfare facilities and security.

The project consisted of the upgrade and refurbishment of the showers on each floor of each wing within the establishment.

HMP Low Newton Restr. Underground Heating Replacement

The project consists of the removal, replacement and upgrade of the prisons entire heating system

HMP Frankland Restr. New 120 Houseblock

This project consists of the construction of a new 120 man accommodation block within the prison to increase the capacity of the facility. The project also included extensive enabling works and the creation and redirection of new ancillary services to supply the facility

Emergency Services Northumberland Fire & Ambulance Stations

1m These schemes involved the refurbishment and extension of the existing EmServ buildings throughout Northumberland with additional welfare and garage facilities being also added

Places Of Worship Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sikh Temple, Newcastle

5m Construction of New Temple

The project involves the construction of a pioneering Sikh Temple in Newcastle to replace the existing temple building. The temple consists of an underground car park, reception room, main temple, community kitchen, congregation hall, offices and extensive garden.

Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham, Various Masonic Establishments

2m These projects ranged from re-roofing and internal decoration, to industrial kitchen re-fits and extensions

Banking Royal Bank of Scotland 500m Cyclical Asset Investment & DDA Programme

The client has a continual rolling programme of upgrade and refurbishment works upon all of its branches, call centres, secure facilities and offices. The individual projects can vary in nature from simple cosmetic upgrades to a high-street branch to the installation of a new vault at a secure warehouse. In addition, the client also has a programme of upgrade works to each building it owns or operates from to ensure that it is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Retail Aldi Stores Rest. Construction of New Stores / Acquisition and

Refurbishment Programme

The client is participating in a hostile acquisition and development programme within the UK and the nature of these schemes ranged from the construction of entire new stores around the UK to the acquisition and refurbishment of competitors stores to spread the brand name and ensure the client has blanket coverage throughout the country.

Highways Balfour Beatty / A66 141m A-A66 Greta Bridge to Stephen Bank Improvement & A66 Carkin

Moor to Scotch Corner Improvement This improvement scheme has upgraded the existing single carriageway A66 to dual carriageway standard via the addition of a new two lane carriageway adjacent to the existing road. The main purpose of the scheme is to improve road safety by allowing slow moving vehicles to be overtaken safely. The proposed works will involve strengthening of the existing bridge parapet and wing walls to increase the level of protection to the bridge and retaining structures from vehicular impact on the above A194. Fawdon Plant Replacement & Upgrade of Refrigeration Plant & Equipment The plant upgraded the refrigeration equipment on its food production lines from compression based system to ETL. The works consisted of the phased suspension of food production on each of its product lines whilst existing equipment was decommissioned and new equipment installed and commissioned. Expansion of Food Production Capacity The project consisted of the strip out and refurbishment of an existing warehouse facility and the installation and commissioning of new production line plant and equipment within the area. New Storage Facilities / Extension of Buildings The works consisted of the construction of an steel-frame and rendered blockwork extension to the rear of the existing warehouse to provide additional storage space for food materials and perishables York Plant The project consisted of the decommissioning and refurbishment of an existing food production line, which was then transported and installed at Nestle’s Fawdon facility. A new production line was then installed and commissioned within the area.
