In Memory of Mrs (Bu) Nash The Glenwood High School Community was deeply saddened by the passing of the wonderful Mrs Faye Nash on Monday 17th February. She was one of our foundation staff members who was so passionate about public education and immensely proud of our school.
Mrs Nash retired in 2017, but her love of teaching saw her commit to working part-time. Teaching was so much a part of her life and her being, that stopping teaching altogether when she reached retirement age was never an option.
Mrs Nash was a born teacher, whose passion and enthusiasm for learning was passed on to other staff members. She was often sought out for advice and guidance, and she graciously gave of her time and thrived when having to solve problems. Her ability to see things from multiple perspectives consistently led her to come up with the best possible way of dealing with issues. Her love of Indonesian and French was evident in her teaching and she always encouraged her students to share this love and to understand that languages unlocked the door to many future options. Her strong belief in needing to be a global citizen and to learn another language, was the foundation of her teaching practice. As the first language teacher appointed to Glenwood High School in 2005, she guided the faculty over the years to establish a strong Languages Department. Being aware that other schools in the local area often had small Language Faculties, with perhaps only one or two teachers appointed, she successfully applied for a grant to establish the Western Sydney Languages Network. This provided an opportunity for language teachers in Western Sydney to get together, share teaching practices and their passion for languages. Her drive to establish this network is indicative of her desire to support others and continue to build language learning in the Western Sydney area.
As a member of the Language Faculty myself, I learnt so much from her, but not just in regards to school matters. Faye navigated her way calmly through any challenge life presented, and just like she did with school matters, she looked at how these could be dealt with and move forward as positively as could be. Faye had an immense love and sincere appreciation for her family and all the blessings she had in life, which made me often take account of my own blessings. This quality Faye possessed is something I shall always remember.

Thank you to parents, students and the Glenwood Community for the condolences they have expressed. Below are some extracts of these from her students which paint a true picture of the kind of teacher she was. Mrs Nash was a lady with the utmost class and dignity. She inspired me to be all I can and never be afraid to give something a go, to take that next step and allow myself to step outside my comfort zone. She said to me once that life is not the oyster that everyone speaks of but a playground to go and experience the rides, words I will always remember. Mrs Nash was the teacher who chose continuously to never give up on me, despite how much of a challenge I was. She saw her role as an opportunity and not an occupation. She was the most patient and sweetest French teacher during the HSC. She made me feel more confident in learning, with the love that she had for her students. Mrs Nash was a wonderful teacher who worked tirelessly with all her students. A role model of quality care and education for student success. Mrs Nash, you were such a wonderful and dedicated teacher and you helped bring GHS to life with it first started off. Mrs Nash was an amazing, dedicated teacher and mentor. I have very fond memories of her always going above and beyond to ensure we had the best learning experience.
Lastly, a word from the Languages Faculty in memory of Bu Nash.
Belles esprits inspirent les autres.
Beautiful minds inspire others.
Jika kau tak menyukai sesuatu, ubahlah hal tersebut. Bila tak bisa mengubahnya,
ubahlah sikapmu. If you don’t like something, change that thing. If you can’t change it, then change your
attitude.

High Achievers Assembly Commitment, hard work and inspiration was personified on Friday 14th February as students, staff and parents of Glenwood High gathered together to welcome back and celebrate 30 or our high achievers from the Class of 2019. These students were proud to celebrate their wonderful achievements and exciting future plans. Our High Achievers Assembly sets the tone for the academic year ahead for our senior students and inspire us to strive toward something better, greater success.
We were delighted to hear three of our 2019 graduates speak at the assembly. Thank you Brendan, Khyati and Rabie who shed light on their experiences and offered some wonderful words of encouragement and advice to our Year 11 and 12 students. All three speakers contribute their success to the support of their family, friends and teachers, by setting goals and being consistent in their study, It was with great pleasure to award Rabie with the title of Dux of 2019 with an ATAR of 98.75. Rabie spoke of the power of determination and persistence, the importance of a long-term purpose or a goal. Rabie also made a valid point that everyone has the capability of achieving the ATAR they need if they are willing to apply themselves. During the Question and Answer Session our current Year 12 students asked our High Achievers many valuable questions about HSC study tips and they also received some great advice such as not hesitating to ask their teachers for guidance and to become best friends with the syllabus. A few students talked about importance to study consistently, regardless if they had already received early acceptance into university, namely to ensure they had as many options as possible for their future studies.
Thank you to the students and parents who attended our assembly, and thank to you Ms Egic for organising this celebration assembly.
2020 Information Evening
Our Open Evening will be held on Monday 2nd March. This is an opportunity for prospective students and parents to take the opportunity to tour the school and learn about the array of subjects taught whilst visiting our faculty presentations. It is an invaluable evening for parents and students currently in year 5 or 6 who will be commencing their high school years in 2021 or 2022.
Road Safety Parents and carers are responsible for a student’s travel to and from school. Schools take over responsibility and duty of care for the student once they enter school premises. When riding or walking to and from school, it is important for students to be aware of their surroundings and follow the road rules. We ask that parents reinforce the following safety rules to their children who ride or walk to school:
• Use the designated pedestrian crossing at the front of the school. (Do not cross at the roundabout.)
• Be aware of the surroundings by not wearing ear phones. • Wear a helmet when riding to school.

School Opal Cards All students must be in possession of a valid Opal card or pay a fare. Students in possession of an Opal card must also tap on/off with their card when boarding our buses. As part of the campaign against fare evasion, and the on-going commitment to provide the level of service needed to transport students to and from your school, Busways conducts regular checks of School Opal cards. This is important, because the Opal data collected determines the level of service we are able to provide to our school. If students don’t tap on and off, the services will appear underutilised and may be considered for cancellation based on low passenger numbers. To apply for a School Opal card or to report a lost or stolen card, go on-line to www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/opal-for-school-students/ Students who are ineligible for a School Opal will need to purchase a Child/Youth Opal card or pay a fare to travel on the buses.

Last year's postponed P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Wednesday, 4 March, 2020 at 7pm in the GHS Front Office Meeting Room (which is just off the main carpark area).
At this AGM all Executive Committee positions will become vacant and our 2020 Executive Committee will be elected. The P&C Executive are elected to act on the behalf of the larger P&C Committee. Their responsibility is to ensure that parental input is represented within the school community. They also oversee the P&C’s financial contribution to the school. All Executive members will be co-signatories on the P&C bank account. We have recently been notified that we were awarded a monetary grant from the Federal Government. This money will be used to create a native garden area around our new ‘Welcome to Country’ sign near the front office. As this was granted to the GHS P&C, we must form a committee for the 2020 year. We look forward to seeing some new faces at the AGM and if you have any questions with regards to our meetings or joining the committee, please email Karen at [email protected].

At the end of last year Glenwood High School had students enter the Blacktown City Art Prize. The exhibition was held at the Blacktown Arts Centre over the Christmas vacation. The theme for the competition was Repair and Restore, and encouraged young artists to consider positive ways they could help the environment. Prizes were awarded for each age group and Zoe won the 13 years category and Samathi won the 14 years category. Both girls are in Year 9 this year and are very talented. Zoe attends Art club each week on Tuesday afternoon.

Dear Parents and Caregivers, In Year 10 students undertake a Careers Education Course, where every fortnight, students will have a Career lesson. In these lessons, students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their interests/goals and explore various career options. This exploration will enable students to gain an understanding of the many different career opportunities available to them and create a personalised Career Pathway. This process will highlight the various study requirements necessary and assist with subject selection for year 11 so they can achieve their goals. During the career classes your child will engage in career exploration including:
• Job Research
• Career Pathways
• Year 11 Subject Selections
• Higher Education Requirements
• Entrepreneurship
• Job interviews
• Prepare for life after school As part of the Careers Education Course students will have the opportunity to participate in a Work Experience Program. This program will run, 1st – 5th June 2020. It is mandatory for students to attend work experience or school. Students are given time to organise their work experience during career lessons, however, students may also be required to complete the organisation at home. Work Experience is an integral part of the Careers Education Course at this school. The aim is for students to gain first-hand experience in the workforce of their chosen area. I look forward to working with you and your child this year during this exciting chapter of their lives. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me on 96299566. Kind regards, Corrine Jones Careers Advisor

Plan to leave early
Parents/caregivers are requested to write a note explaining why the student needs to leave school early and the time they need to leave. Notes should have the student’s full name and year group printed clearly for records and files. Students must hand in this note to student reception BEFORE school where they will be issued with an Early Leaver’s Pass. Students are to show their classroom teacher this pass at the beginning of the lesson if they need to leave during class time. Students are then to report to student reception and inform office staff that they are leaving. Students are not permitted to leave early on sports days. If there are exceptional circumstances on sports days, students must bring in a note from home and have it approved by the Deputy Principal BEFORE school. If parents/caregivers unexpectedly need to collect their child/ward, they are requested to call the school beforehand so arrangements can be made for the student to be waiting at reception. Parents/caregivers must report to the parent reception to collect their child/ward.
Items left at home If your child/ward forgets to bring items to school (i.e. lunch, items of clothing, assignments etc.), parents/caregivers may bring this item to the parent reception. It is your child/ward's responsibility to enquire at the student counter during recess or lunch time to collect items left at home. Extended Absences Parents/caregivers need to apply for extended leave for students by completing an ‘Application for Extended leave - Travel’ form which is available from reception. This form is to be returned to reception for approval from their Deputy Principal. This will enable the school to hold the students position at the school while they are on leave.
Students are responsible for making arrangements with their teacher to collect work for the time they are away. When students return to school, it is their responsibility to catch up on all the work they have missed. Extended leave is discouraged in the Preliminary or HSC years, as students will be at risk of not meeting course requirements.
