WELCOMEI have always been passionate about being Patron of the GLL Sport Foundation. Through our continued support of young sporting talent we have been able to make a significant difference to the lives of these athletes and improve their chances of competing at the top of their chosen sport.

It is vitally important that we inspire young people to excel in sport and harness their talent towards future Games. From my own experience stating out as a young athlete and progressing through my sport, I understand how important our support from the Foundation can be to the realisation of sporting ambitions.

Support to these young athletes also goes beyond the field of play, it has an educational value by promoting the opportunity that sport can bring and highlighting the benefits of encouraging healthy lifestyles to all in the community.

The future of the GLL Sport Foundation is very positive with the programme looking to support more athletes across our local communities throughout the UK.

Finally I would like to give my best wishes to all those athletes that been supported through the GLL Sport Foundation in 2015 and we look forward to continuing to support your athlete journey in the years to come.

SUPPORTING TALENTThe wealth of young sporting talent within our local communities is truly inspiring; it is the product of a wide ranging team of individuals and organisations that dedicate themselves to help bring positive opportunities to young people through sport. We are delighted to be part of this team and to be able to make a considerable contribution to this agenda.

The GLL Sport Foundation is the UKs largest independent supporters of young sporting talent in the UK. With the continued partnerships with local authorities, sponsors and supporters we have now awarded over 8400 athlete awards totalling over £4.9million support.

Our research identifies that a remarkable 71% of awards go to athletes that are aged under the age of 21 and that over 91% of award recipients receive no other central funding support, highlighting that the programme is supporting athletes that need to support to develop along their performance pathway.

Our experience through the support of young sporting talent is showing a growing impact of legacy agendas towards Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and beyond. We are proud that we can make a positive contribution to this agenda and we remain committed to inspire others to follow.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, partners and supporters who remain the lifeblood of this fantastic enterprise.

In 2015 the GLL Sport Foundation focussed award profile and events to local partnership areas instead of across the National landscape; this localised focus provided the core opportunity for local authorities and stakeholders to see the direct impact the programme is making to their local young people.

PARTNERSHIP AWARD EVENTS

GLL Sport Foundation launch event in Belfast with core partners

Events included direct award presentations and wider sporting events with the athlete award being an element that was included, notable events included:

• Greenwich Starting Blocks, which is the athlete support programme that the GLL Sport Foundation works in partnership with across the Royal Borough of Greenwich to support their talented athletes. 78 local athletes have been supported at a support value of over £47,000. Athletes supported include London 2012 Olympic judo silver medallist Gemma Gibbons and 2015 Youth Olympics Games athlete Olivia Piechota, clearly showcasing that the next generation of talented athletes have both sporting role models to emulate but also that there is support in place to support their sporting journeys.

• Another localised partnership event was for South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse. 63 local athletes have been supported at a support value of over £41,000. Athletes supported include London 2012 Paralympic para rowing gold medallist Pamela Relph and GB rower Graeme Thomas. Both athletes are looking to compete and medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The programme is inclusive in terms of it support across Olympic, Paralympic, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sporting disciplines.

• Repton Boxing Clubs prestigious May Show was an event where the GLL Sport Foundation and core sponsors attended. At this event 12 young Repton Boxing Club boxers were presented with their 2015 awards and sponsors were treated to bout of great boxing and the opportunity to speak with attending athletes and ambassadors about their sporting journeys including boxer Viddal Riley who won a bronze medal at the Youth Olympics in 2015 and London Lions basketball player Joe Ikhinmwin who was an integral part of their BBL playoff finals campaign.

• GLL, in partnership with Belfast City Council and Mary Peters Trust launched the GLL Sport Foundation to support talented athletes across Belfast. The programme is supported by Sport NI and is a core component of the athlete support programme across the city. The programme has also linked with core sport science partners in Ulster University and Rebound Physiotherapy so that supported athletes have a complete support package.

MAKING A DIFFERENCESport ScienceThe programme works in partnership with three core organisations to provide athletes with access to sport science expertise:

• Crystal Palace Physiotherapy Group provided supported athletes with access to physiotherapy and injury rehabilitation support.

• Middlesex University and London Sport Institute provided supported athletes with 1to1 support through an academic performance programme. The partnership also enabled supported athletes to access seminars and workshops to gain knowledge and understanding in core areas from nutrition to performance analysis.

Coaching and employment opportunitiesThe programme directly linked with GLL in providing supported athletes with gaining sports coaching qualifications and then a direct opportunity to employment through coaching GLL Sports Courses programmes to the juniors within our communities.

Training membershipsThe programme directly linked with GLL in providing supported athletes with free training memberships enabling them to access Better sport and leisure venues across the UK to support and complement their core training programmes.

Athletes use the membership for multiple training purposes, Lucy Newman used her membership to aid her BMX injury rehab “I’m currently doing two rehab sessions a day, and access to the well equipped gym at Chesham Leisure Centre means I have everything that I need to be able to do my rehab. Use of the pool also means I can continue with my hydrotherapy exercises in between trips to Manchester, as these help a lot with my knee mobility. As I don’t see a physio on a weekly basis, I am also planning to make use of the physiotherapy sessions offered to members of the GLL scheme for some soft tissue work in between my trips up to Manchester. This is really important at the moment for preventing everything in my knee from stiffening up too much and interfering with my rehab”.

“I can’t thank the GLL Sport Foundation enough for all the support they have given me through the last couple of years of injuries, and their continuing support through this latest set back. Thanks to their help with my recovery I’m hoping to be back riding in the spring and focusing on having fun on my bike again whilst gradually building back up to racing, initially at regional races and then hopefully my first British Downhill Series National races which I never got the chance to compete in after my injuries at the start of the 2014 season. I’m also planning to use this period off my bike to work on improving the other areas that I’ve neglected in my

The GLL Sport Foundation is an athlete focussed programme that looks to provide multiple benefits to supported athletes to support their performance levels and their wider sporting lives and in doing so links with core partners within our local communities; programme elements include:

training in the past, so will be coming back fitter and stronger, and hopefully with the ability to ‘bounce’ better when things do occasionally go wrong on the downhill tracks”.

Inspiring the next generationThe programme is directly aligned to GLLs core values of positively impacting our local communities, and central to this is profiling the successes of supported athletes to our wider communities to inspire them to achieve in their lives whether is taking up a sport for the first time or aspiring to be a future Olympian or Paralympian. Therefore the programme linked supported athletes to wider GLL agendas namely whereby over 250 events were attended by supported athletes.

The GLL Sport Foundation is delighted to continue its partnership with SportsAid; this partnership provides the fundamental elements of award co-ordination, talent identification and alignment to the National Governing Bodies of Sport talent pathways and their nominations.

As part of this long term agreement, SportsAid put forward 86 direct nominations from National Governing Bodies of Sport for their most talented

athletes who are not currently on centralised funding. These athletes received joint GLL Sport Foundation and SportsAid awards. SportsAid also ensured that all 1700 athlete awards were aligned to the correct award level through NGB talent pathway verification.

“We are really proud of the impact SportsAid’s partnership with the GLL Sport Foundation is making in sport, together we’re able to focus on

giving young athletes across the UK recognition of their sporting potential and financial support to aid their development. Many of these young athletes aspire to compete in future Olympic and Paralympic Games and the support offered by the Foundation will make that possible”.

2016 OUTLOOKWe are delighted that the GLL Sport Foundation has continued to showcase and support the extensive wealth of young sporting talent within our local communities. Our partners and sponsors remain steadfast in a shared belief that the values and impact of this support has far reaching benefit. Our support not only helps the next generation of sporting talent but provides local communities and young people with positive aspirational focus and development opportunities.

2016 is set to be another record breaking year for the Foundation with the demand for support stronger than ever and awareness of the GLL Sport Foundation now well established from our local communities to elite sport.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro means that 2016 will be another exciting year for many of our supported athletes and with the London Aquatics Centre hosting the European Swimming Championships inspiration for the next generation of athletes and our wider communities will be significant. We have set a target to provide support to more athletes and to provide an increased range of athlete benefits.

The continued growth of GLL and our partnerships across the UK is very positive to the future of the GLL Sport Foundation and means that we can extend our impact into new regions and communities. We already know that our support will be expanded into 46 partnerships across the UK including Belfast City Council, Manchester City Council and partnership leisure trusts North Country Leisure and Tone Leisure.

We would like to thank all our partners and sponsors for their continued support as we expand our influence and support, we also want to pay tribute to all our supported athletes and ambassadors that bring the programme to life through their sporting successes and attendances at local and national events, sports awards, sports sessions and GLL centre events. Your sporting achievements and commitment to giving back has already started to inspire others and help the next generation of athletes.
