Seminar Theme: Global Challenges, Local Solutions – Accounting to the rescue

The profession of accountancy has endured centuries of evolution. It has evolved with age and adapted itself to

better serve the challenges it gets to face from time to time. At the start of 2013 we are at that cross roads again. While battling some existing challenges, new ones are rearing their head. It is up to the accountancy bodies, the practitioners, students, governments, academics and businessmen who will have to define the battle plan to meet these challenges. Ranging from the never ending debate of convergence of global standards and the cross border mobility of people and organizations, issues like transfer pricing, investment valuation, fair value accounting are at the fore front of issues driving the agenda. There is already talk that new challenges are emerging from the likes of traditional topics such as leasing, risk management, impairments and revenue recognition whereas no items on the radar now include emissions trading, accounting for biological assets and rate regulations. As practitioners of the trade of accountancy, it is extremely important that we are ahead of the curve and able to understand, implement and manage these accountancy challenges successfully in our organizations. This seminar aims to make sense of these and many more challenges and also provide expert talk on some locals solutions that are best suited for us in our current work environment.

Panel Discussion: “Impact of convergence of Saudi Standards to IFRS – on companies, audit firms and accountants”

As the Saudi Organization for Public Accountants (SOCPA) has announced its transition plan towards achieving harmonization with international accounting standards, companies in KSA are now gearing towards development of an IFRS transition program and allocate the necessary resources to implement the same . This includes obtaining the commitment from the top down, i.e., from those charged with governance to those responsible for financial reporting by individual business units.

The transition provides an excellent opportunity for the accountancy community to seize the opportunity it provides from the shift from rules based approach to the principles based approach. As practitioners of this trade where IFRS dominates our day to day workings, it is extremely important that in times of convergence we are able to assimilate the new approaches that will blend into IFRS as well as work that would be required on updating our accounting manuals, modifying internal controls and adapting to technical accounting changes. This topic will debate the importance of convergence and how it might impact your current and future work (and job!).
