LifeStart sets life performance

At Nutreco, we believe in sustainable ways of improving animal productivity. The development of the young animal is crucial in order for it to reach its full potential in later life. Therefore, we invest heavily in LifeStart research. This concept brings together world-class expertise on animal health and nutrition with practical farm management experience. LifeStart is dedicated to the promotion and refinement of practical farming methods and the scientific principles behind them. Following the LifeStart research by Nutreco researchers the coming five years, we will be able to refine healthy calf rearing, in order for them to become more productive dairy cows.

With speakers from science, business and practice, we hope to take our audience on a journey from the scientific foundation via the application and practical advantages of LifeStart, towards more sustainable animal production.

Institute Rindergesundheitsdienst AGRIDEA, Vetsuisse-Fakultät

Position Professor

E-mail address [email protected]

Short biography: After studying veterinary medicine, Martin Kaske prepared his doctoral thesis about the regulation of digesta passage in ruminants. Thereafter, he worked in a private cattle practice in Northern Germany. He switched back to the university, completed his habilitation and became an assistant professor at the University of Veterinary Medicine in the Clinic for Cattle in Hannover. From 2006 to 2008 he was at the Technical University Munich where he performed studies about metabolic resilience of high yielding dairy cows and metabolic programming of calves. Since 2013, he is senior lecturer at the Vetsuisse Faculty in Zürich in the Department for Farm Animals and consultant of the Bovine Health Service of Switzerland. Presentation Summary:

The idea of an epigenetic perinatal programming of regulatory systems in mammals has been suggested more than 40 years ago. The development of concepts about the modification of genome regulation by the nutritional status of the maternal organism and the offspring will be depicted using examples from epidemiology and experimental work. The impact of the present knowledge for livestock farming, in particular for rearing of dairy calves, will be addressed.

Presentation Summary: The LifeStart concept is based on a vast available amount of research that links events during the time of birth and early development to life time performance. These events are regulated by epigenetic mechanisms that have been identified in multiple species ranging from bees to humans. In the dairy cow, colostrum quantity, and quality as well as nutrient intake during the first months of life have been consistently correlated with higher milk production later in life. Milk production during the first lactation has a positive and linear relationship with ADG pre-weaning.

16.00 Dairy calf nutrition today - a veterinary perspective

Institute Synergy Farm Health Ltd

Position Veterinary Surgeon

E-mail address [email protected]

Short biography: Alastair is a director in Synergy Farm Health, a farm animal veterinary practice based in the South West of England. He holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Diploma in Cattle Health and Production. Aside his practice responsibilities he acts as a consultant to individual farms, pharmaceutical companies, universities, industry and veterinary bodies on all areas of cattle health and production both within the UK and internationally. He has written and presented several papers relating to a variety of subjects within the field of cattle health and production and has co-authored a book “Practical Cattle Farming” published by Crowood Press and is co-editor of Dairy Herd Health published by CAB International.

Presentation Summary: There is a multitude of pre-weaning calf rearing practices adopted within the UK dairy industry. Information collected and collated within Synergy Farm Health’s youngstock programmes demonstrates that too frequently many of these systems fail to achieve the desired target weight gains, result in significant levels of variation in growth within the first three months and are associated with too high levels of morbidity and mortality. Such inefficiencies are resulting in significant financial cost to the farmer both in terms of rearing cost and lost productivity. In addressing these issues the need to monitor calf performance more accurately, as well as adopting improved nutritional programmes, especially within the delivery of milk to the pre-weaned calves, are highlighted as highly important interventions on many farms.

Presentation Summary: As calves are born agammaglobulinemic, they depend entirely on the intake of colostral antibodies to provide passive maternal immunity. Good colostrum management is hence pivotal in order to reduce morbidity and mortality in newborn calves. A good colostrum management consists of providing sufficient amounts (200gr IgG) of good quality colostrum (> 50g/l) within the first 6 hours post partum to the calf. In order to reduce labour, feeding 4l of good quality colostrum once, immediately after birth by an esophageal tube is commonly practiced in large BB herds. Bacteriological contamination of the colostrum is a risk factor when esophageal feeding is performed and should consequently be prevented.

08.45 The latest scientific insights of calf nutrition

Company Nutreco R&D

Position Ruminant researcher

E-mail address [email protected]

Short biography: Harma Berends has a farm background and studied Animal Sciences. She recently finished her PhD at Wageningen University focusing on quantitative calf nutrition including solid feeds and milk replacer. In 2013, she joined the Ruminant Research Centre of Nutreco in Boxmeer (the Netherlands). Her main research focus is on increasing feed quality and efficiency in beef and dairy calves.

| 11

Presentation Summary: Aspects of calf nutrition related to high planes of nutrition are discussed. Rumen development is crucial and of specific interest when weaning calves at high planes of nutrition. Nutreco research showed that age of weaning affects the transition from a liquid to a solid feed diet. Also, step-wise in comparison to abrupt weaning reduces the gap in energy intake associated to this transition, thereby preventing a growth dip. The provision of fibrous feeds is important for rumen development and fermentation and chop size is important. Increasing feeding frequency may favor calf performance, especially at high planes of nutrition.

Company Trouw Nutrition Germany

Position Sales representative

E-mail address [email protected]

Short biography: Martin Wufka is working at Nutreco since 2010 as account manager for cattle in southern Germany and is farming a dairy farm with actually 230 dairy cows together with his brother. While he studied on the university Weihenstephan-Triesdorf (graduated 1999), he was intensely engaged in ruminant nutrition. From 2000 to 2010 he worked for a smaller specialty feed company in the sectors product development and sales and could get very much practical know-how. During this time, he was several times as short-term advisor on farms in Russia and Romania. Parallel to this, he and his brother developed the parent’s dairy farm to a sustainable farm.

| 12

Presentation Summary: The LifeStart concept is applied with great success on the dairy farm of Bernhard and Martin Wufka. They milk 230 cows (Simmental) with an average milk production of 9500 kg. The conversion to LifeStart was carried out in May 2010. The specific system on the Wufka farm is the use of a unique LifeStart approved calf milk replacer which supported the intestinal flora from the beginning in combination with a special Dry-TMR . Four years later, the first of these calves have now completed their first lactation. Most of these cows started their first lactation with a daily milk production of over 30 kg. The milk yield in the first lactation has increased by around 300 kg. A further benefit of the LifeStart program is the increased durability of the cows.

Short biography: Mr. Leonel Leal is a researcher in calf nutrition within the Nutreco Research and Development team. Leonel is responsible for new developments in the functional nutrition of calves and for the LifeStart research programme. Leonel comes from Portugal where he was born and raised on a dairy farm near Oporto. Leonel joined Nutreco in early 2011 as junior researcher after obtaining his Msc in Animal Science from University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) in Vila Real (Portugal). During his Msc, he focused on the effect of pre-weaning feeding regimes on growth, health and lifetime performance of dairy cows. In 2012, he became also a PhD candidate in a joint project between Nutreco Research and Development and Wageningen University.

| 13

Presentation Summary: Epidemiological data and controlled interventional studies indicate that perinatal nutrient supply can have lifelong effects on health and metabolism of humans and animals. Early life nutrient deprivation during “critical periods” of development can negatively affect health. On the contrary, optimal nutrient supply can also improve future health and increase productivity in dairy cows. The underlying mechanisms behind this “programming” of later productivity by pre-weaning nutrient intake yet need to be discovered. Nutreco, with its LifeStart research program, aims to unveil these mechanisms to improve calf nutrition towards further control and enhancement of these effects in dairy and beef cattle.
