The world faces new demands and new expectations at an ever increasing pace. Governments are confronted with challenges which increasingly span beyond national borders - the instability in the international economic and financial system, climate change, development and poverty reduction, hu-manitarian crises and intervention, terrorism, conflict-resolution and peace-building. Many solutions can only be shaped at regional and global level. To be efficient and effective in this complex, interlinked and fast-changing scenario, we are required to re-design our governance structures and capitalize on new actors, transnational resources and expertise.No player – intergovernmental organisation, academic institution, national government or private company – can stand alone and act to address global issues. A harmonised global action is needed.The Global Governance Programme, with its research, policy and training dimensions, provides a European setting to conduct research at the highest level and promote synergies between research and policy-making, to generate ideas and to identify creative and innovative solutions to global challenges.

In 2013, the GGP enriches its research dimension with two new research strands “Cultural Plural-ism: The Driver for Social Innovation” (Anna Triandafyllidou) and “Global Economics: Multi-lateral Co-operation and Policy Spill-overs” (Bernard Hoekman), which complement the already existing re-search strands: “Climate Governance: Institution-building and the EU” (Denny Ellerman), “Develop-ment: Emerging Markets and International Co-operation” (Giorgia Giovannetti), “International Trade Observatory” (Petros C. Mavroidis), and “Modes of Global Governance” (Miguel Poiares Maduro).The GGP continues to support the Globalisation Database and the GLOTHRO research projects, and this year introduces two new ones: “Global Governance by Indicators” and “Governance: Exploring the Tax Dimension”, a joint initiative of the GGP and the WU Vienna University Global Tax Policy Centre at the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law.

fellowship opportunities

Within the fellowship schemes of the EUI and of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS), the GGP offers fellowships to young and senior academics, namely, Jean Monnet Post-doc-toral, Robert Schuman and Marie Curie fellowships.

■ Jean Monnet Fellowships: one or two year fellowships for post-doctorate fellows in the early stages of their academic careers who specialise in the subjects dealt with by the GGP Research Strands. 2014-2015 application deadline: 25 October 2013 (applyfellow@eui.eu)

■ Robert Schuman Fellowships: three to ten months for established academics with an international reputation to pursue their research at the RSCAS. The fellowship is awarded upon invitation only.

■ Marie Curie Fellowships: the EUI and the GGP act as host institutions for fellowships awarded by the European Commission.

■ EU/Asia Fellowships: two years for post-doctorate fellows to conduct research on EU/Asia rela-tions or global issues of importance for both Europe and Asia. Partner institutions: Chinese Acad-emy of Social Sciences, Keio University, IEEM/University of Macau.

The High-Level Policy Seminars (HLPS) aim to generate and contribute to academic and policy debate on key issues of the international agenda and to have an impact on policy design and implementation. Each HLPS produces a policy paper, which presents the reflections of the academics, and a policy brief, which highlights the topical aspects of the debate and puts forward policy recommendations.

Policy

The Academy of Global Governance (AGG) offers a unique executive training programme and an op-portunity for policy-makers, diplomats, international organisations and public sector officials, execu-tives, and junior academics to exchange experiences, challenge assumptions and advance innovative and creative solutions to topical issues relating to governance.The AGG equips trainees with the skills to pursue and advance a career in EU institutions, national governments, international organisations and business, and facilitates the development of synergies and networks among experts working in diverse contexts and coming from the different corners of the world.
