Breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells and it is the most common female cancer, the second most

common cause of cancer death in women (after lung cancer), and the main cause of death in women ages 45 to

55. When found and treated early, breast cancer is often curable.

Risks that you cannot change include

Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises as a woman gets older

Genes - there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, that greatly increase the risk. Women who have family

members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.

Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55

Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy (also called menopausal hormone

therapy), taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or

having dense breasts

Any of the following unusual changes in the breast can be a symptom of breast cancer:

Swelling of all or part of the breast Skin irritation or dimpling

Breast pain Nipple pain or the nipple turning inward

Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin Nipple discharge other than breast milk

Lump in the underarm area

Abnormal lump — Breast cancer can be discovered when a lump or other change in the breast or armpit is found

by a woman herself or by a doctor. In addition to a lump, other abnormal changes may include dimpling of the skin,

a change in the size or shape of one breast, inversion (pulling in) of the nipple when it previously pointed outward,

or a discoloration of the skin of the breast.

Mammogram — A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. The breast tissue is compressed for the x-ray, which

decreases the thickness of the tissue and holds the breast in position, so the radiologist can find abnormalities

more accurately.

Breast ultrasound — An ultrasound uses sound waves to look at breast tissue and can tell if a lump is a fluid filled

cyst or a solid lump.

Breast MRI — Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnet to create a detailed image of a part of

the body. Breast MRI may be recommended to aid in the diagnosis of breast cancer in selected situations.

Breast biopsy — If breast cancer is suspected, the next step is to sample the abnormal area with a core needle

biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Core needle biopsies are performed with local anesthesia and do not require

sedation.

Screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease, like cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms.

The goal of screening exams, such as mammograms, is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms.

Breast cancers that are found because they can be felt tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread

beyond the breast.

We feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more

lives could be saved. The early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be

diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.

Breast cancer treatments are local or systemic. Local treatments are used to remove, destroy or control the cancer

cells in a specific area, such as the breast. They include:

Surgery, either mastectomy or lumpectomy - also called breast-conserving therapy.

Radiation therapy – It uses a special kind of high-energy beam to damage cancer cells. It is highly targeted,

highly effective way to destroy cancer cells in the breast

Systemic treatments are used to destroy or control cancer cells all over the body. They include:

Chemotherapy: It uses drugs to kill cancer cells.

Hormone therapy : It uses drugs to prevent hormones, especially estrogen, from promoting the growth of breast

cancer cells that may remain after breast cancer surgery.

Biological Therapy: It works by using the body's immune system to destroy cancer cells.

At BGS Global Hospitals, We have highly trained team of breast surgeon; plastic surgeon backed up by Highly

equipped ICU, High End Radiotherapy machine and well trained Medical Oncologists.
