INTRODUCTION:-
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a
multidimensional statistical tool used to describe the
state of countries hunger situation. The GHI measures
progress and failures in the global fight against hunger.
The GHI is updated once a year.
The Index was adopted and further developed by
the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI),
and was first published in 2006 with the Welthungerhilfe,
a German non-profit organisation (NGO).

OBJECTIVES:-It has following 3 objectives:
Design a GHI as a tool for international monitoring &
advocacy, and demonstrate its added value.
Rank countries according to the GHI & illustrate trends.
Interpret the GHI findings & analyze determinants of
hunger.

CONCEPT & CALULATION:-
Hunger has many faces: increased
susceptibility to disease, shortfalls in nutritional status,
loss of energy, disability, death due to starvation, or
infectious diseases whose lethal course is the result of
weakened general health.
The GHI is designed to capture several
dimensions of hunger in one value, thus giving an
overview of the complex problem.

CALCULATION
The Global Hunger Index is calculated as follows:
PUN + CUW+ CM
GHI=
3
PUN: proportion of the population that is undernourished
(in %)
CUW: prevalence of underweight children under five
(in %)
CM: proportion of children dying before the age of five
(in %)

GHI RESULT 2009:-
The 2009 GHI themed “The Challenge of Hunger: Focus
on Financial Crisis & Gender inequality” prepared by
IFPRI was released in October 2009. The GHI 2009 shows
that world wide progress in reducing hunger remains
slow. The 2009 GHI has fallen by only one quarter from
the 1990 GHI.

WHO ARE THE HUNGRY?

countries. According to the FAO statistics, there are
more than 1 billion hungry people in the world & 915
million of them are in developing countries. They are

CONCLUSION:
In Conclusion, the fight against hunger remains
very much a task of public action by both government &
civil society organizations.
It is hoped that the GHI will strengthen the
attention to the hunger problem & make both developing
& developed countries, national & international players,
more accountable for their commitments & will help to
speed up urgently needed progress in the fight against
hunger.
