Current facts

▪ According to MunichRe (NatCatSERVICE: April 2017), disaster-related costs

worldwide amounted to USD 177 billion in 2016. An increase of USD 74 billion

compared to 2015.

▪ A total of 770 extreme events were registered in 2016. 40 more than in 2015.

▪ 9.481 victims of extreme events were registered in 2016. This is two thirds less

than in 2015 (25.400).

▪ Hydrological (50,4%) and meteorological (32,5%) disasters generated the

largest numbers of all registered types.

▪ Asia was the most affected continent by extreme natural events in 2016, both

in terms of victims (59,2%) and of economic losses (48,8%).

▪ GIDRM was founded by the German government in 2013. GIZ was

commissioned with the operative management of the initiative.

▪ GIDRM was established as an inter-sectoral initiative. It strives to

strengthen the German contribution towards improving disaster and

climate risk management worldwide, by bringing together varied

expertise.

▪ Advisory board: Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and

Development (BMZ), Federal Foreign Office (AA), Federal Ministry of the

Interior (BMI), Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF),

Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and

Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and

Energy (BMWi)

▪ Overall term: 08/2013 – 03/2018

▪ Volume: 15.750.000 EUR (incl. co-financing of 250.000 EUR by Swiss

Development Cooperation, SDC)

Disaster Risk Management „Made in and with Germany“

▪ Inter-sectoral approach: bringing together relevant federal ministries (BMI,

BMWi, AA, BMBF, BMUB) and subordinated entities related to DRM.

▪ Clustering German expertise in DRM: services and technologies from the

public and private sectors, academia and civil society.

▪ Linking German and international solution-oriented approaches for DRM

through project cooperation and cost-sharing among partners, countries, and

regions.

▪ International positioning: promoting German participation in global and regional

DRM networks, initiatives and exchange formats and by combining supply and

demand (match-making).
