In alignment with JKTech’s commitment to safety and developing initiatives for the mining industry, our G-MIRM program has been instrumental in assisting mining companies in improving safety and embedding risk control as part of their organisational culture.

About G-MIRM

Developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, the Global Minerals Industry Risk Management program, G-MIRM, delivers practical and effective risk management solutions.

G-MIRM provides a high quality, globally available and consistent program for executing a step change in operational risk management by providing the information required by managers to enable effective decision making about risk.

Decreasing risk has always been a primary goal for JKTech in delivering outcomes for its clients by focusing on safety for mining operations to maximise their success.

Our aim is to educate and equip the minerals industry with knowledge and skills to better identify hazards and to make better decisions about risk.

G-MIRM builds on a wealth of expertise to identify risk management best practices through insights gained from the mining industry and from the nuclear, aviation and chemical sectors.

In 2007, a working group representing Anglo American Business Units from across the globe was formed to develop a ‘One Anglo’ Risk Management process.

Professor Jim Joy was appointed as the Anglo American Chair in Minerals Industry Safety Risk Management at the University of Queensland and Jim was an integral member of the working group.

G-MIRM aims to achieve two critical outcomes:

1. To initiate a change in operational risk management through improving managers’ understanding and practice of risk management.

2. To challenge and affect the way managers, as individuals, make decisions, behave and lead teams in managing operational risk.

G-MIRM is implemented through a global network of universities and training providers that ensures consistent outcomes and quality assurance in the delivery and effectiveness of the program.

G-MIRM Tailored Programs for Industry

Each global segment has a local university representatives with whom we work to maintain quality and consistent delivery of the course as well as integrating core content to suit the local environment.

1. The terminology for Safety Risk Management is clearly defined and consistently presented at all levels, to establish a quality discussion at any level about hazards, unwanted events, risks and controls.

2. Core content includes a model of the risk management process, which involves a deviation from previous risk management models in Standards due to the need to emphasise selected areas.

3. A leading practice, ‘layered’ approach to applying risk assessment at a site level is consistently communicated, discussed and analysed. This model is based on an industry benchmark study.

4. Finally, the risk management process is explained and discussed as a maturity journey that involves both people and systems, with discussions and exercises to challenge and identify current status as well as business unitild plans to improve.

“We have created a maturity journey which takes mining companies through the steps to achieve world class safety risk performance.”Jim Joy, Manager Risk Management Services JKTech Pty Ltd

We have structured the global G-MIRM delivery to benefit the whole industry.
