Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Global Network for Emergency Medicine it is with great pleasure that I announce the upcoming 3rd Global Network on Emergency Medicine Conference which will be held from the 25th – 29th April, 2014 in the Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This conference aims to promote the specialty of Emergency Medicine and will offer a wonderful opportunity for academic/scientific exchange. It will target all medical professionals who deal with the complex nature of Emergency Medicine; those engaged in pre-hospital, in-hospital or inter-hospital emergency medical care and disaster planning; and those involved with the training of emergency physicians, nurses and technicians.

The Scientific Committee is pleased to offer a high quality scientific programme which will cover all the major topics in Emergency Medicine. Current worldwide advances in Emergency Medicine will provide an exciting platform for discussion. With an invited faculty of world-class speakers, researchers and educators who will give outstanding lectures, discuss clinical cases, and moderate discussions. The event will be organized in two parts: 2 days of Pre Conference workshops and 3 days of Conference.

We look forward to welcoming you to the UAE and to what promises to be an exciting conference.

Workshop objectives

1. To explore the typology of simulation-based education.

2. To acquire knowledge on scenario development and facilitation, briefing, and debriefing.

3. To discuss aspects of Crisis Resource Management (CRM), teamwork, human factors, and interdisciplinary learning that can be addressed using simulation.

4. To put newly acquired knowledge in practice in small groups by creating and running scenarios making use of a patient simulator, and facilitating a debriefing.

Scenario Based Simulation Facilitator Workshop 25 – 26 April, 2014

Course description

Simulation is a technique to replace or amplify real-patient experiences with guided experiences, artificially contrived, that evokes or replicates substantial aspects of the real world in a fully interactive manner. As an educational strategy, simulation provides the opportunity for learning that is both immersive and experiential. Thus, to improve education and ultimately enhance patient safety, healthcare professionals are using simulation in many forms including simulated and virtual patients, static and interactive manikin simulators, task trainers, screen-based (computer) simulations and ‘serious’ gaming. Moreover, simulation has the potential to recreate scenarios that are rarely experienced and test professionals in challenging situations, and to carefully replay or examine their actions. It is a powerful learning tool to help the modern healthcare professional achieve higher levels of competence and safer care. These 2 days courses managed by world class experts on simulation will give the opportunity to trainees to get knowledge and how to teach simulation in emergency medicine using high fidelity manikins in a simulation center.

Faculty:Elhadi Husein AburawiJabeen Fayyaz, Pakistan Tarek Ibrahim El Azzabi, UAE

ParticipantsThis course is designed for PEM Physicians, Pediatricians, Intensivists, and Emergency Physicians who provide care for children in emergencies and who want to refine their knowledge and skills in PEM.

Course description & learning objectives

Background: The APEC course is a development of the Paediatric Section at EuSEM, and will be conducted by its faculty members. At the end of the course EuSEM Pediatric Emergency Medicine Section will provide participants with certificates of course completion.

Objectives: To provide physicians participating in the course with both knowledge and advanced skills in recognizing and managing a wide spectrum of paediatric emergencies including trauma, both in the hospital and pre-hospital settings.

General Outline: A 1.5-day course. During the morning hours of both days, lectures will be presented on the management of a wide spectrum of paediatric emergencies (including trauma) with emphasis on evidence-based literature. During the afternoon hours students will actively participate in small group advanced skill stations, case scenarios and simulations designed to provide knowledge and skills relevant to paediatric emergency medicine as well as elicit discussion on the clinical management of common paediatric emergencies including trauma.
