Participants will be able to identify the impact of freight transportation on overall supply chain activities. The overall concept of dimensional weight, load planning, and route planning which are key for understanding transportation rates will be introduced.Key concepts and tools of the transportation function will be presented in such a way that participants will be able to describe how these activities are interrelated to one another and to the broader context of supply management.Logistics is the heart of Supply Chain integration with a focus on inventory in motion (transportation) and at rest (warehousing), to provide high service levels to customers at low costs. Strategic logistics decisions involve trade-offs among purchasing, transportation, warehousing and finance. Moving large shipments of goods may lower purchasing costs and reduce transportation costs but increase warehouse and inventory carrying costs. In this module, students will apply concepts and tools to Product Life Cycle management, Customer Service costing and segregation, and inventory planning.Students will define supply chain management, assess supply chain risk and conduct a supply chain social responsibility audit. Different operating environments and organisational missions imply different “best practices” for supply chain management. In this course, students will learn to apply mapping tools to describe and analyse supply chains. The focus is on clarifying SCM strategy and linking supply chain performance to return on assets (ROA) and return on investment (ROI). To meet the demands of increasingly educated consumers, students will learn to recognize cycle time reduction (CTR) opportunities, make inter-organisational information systems (IOIS) recommendations, assess supply chain risk and audit supply chains in terms of social responsibility. This program also focuses on the issues in leadership and professionalism, such as developing a leadership point of view and a leader profile, creating a vision and mission statement, and performing steps to effective leadership. One of the primary goals of this workshop is to create awareness and advance knowledge about issues in business ethics and supply chain social responsibility. Through readings, discussions, mini-cases and exercises, candidates will learn about a broad range of social responsibility factors, such as environmental concerns and “fair trade.”Finally, this workshop focuses on strategic issues in risk management, from identifying the types of risk that exist, to developing a plan of recovery following a risk event. Many of the students may already be familiar with some of the terminology, theory and practice of risk management. This workshop will further acquaint them with facets of avoidance, mitigation and acceptance, and allow them the opportunity to improve their own risk management skills in a highly interactive learning environment.
