Our specialist areasDedicated exclusively to transport infrastructure.

Modernising the rail system

The capacity crunchThe rail industry is experiencing a global growth in passenger numbers. In 2008 Eurostar’s passenger numbers increased by 10.3%. This trend is creating numerous challenges as capacity is stretched. However, it is also a key driver in the development of the industry. Advances in rail infrastructure maintenance processes and technologies and the implementation of modern rail signalling and train control systems, are driving efficiency, maximising capacity, reducing costs and increasing revenues.

A high-speed futureRailways are increasing high-speed capacity to cope with future demand. The Spanish government is planning to spend over €100 million over the next 15 years on the development of their high-speed network, one of many exciting developments. As we move to a future of very high-speed rail, selecting and implementing the right high-speed rail technology is ever more important.

Global Transport Forum events bring together rail infrastructure managers, operators and suppliers to discuss the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow. At our events, senior industry professionals shape the future for an interoperable, efficient, cost effective and profitable railway network.

Delivering the airports of the future

Creating operational efficiencyThe majority of the world’s major airports are already operating at close to maximum capacity. The industry has no choice but to react to these challenges. BAA has recently committed to investing £137 million to modernise Heathrow’s IT infrastructure. Leading airport owners and operators are on a drive to integrate processes and systems for greater efficiency in airport operations in order to maximise existing capacity, reduce costs and increase revenues.

Expanding airport capacityIn the medium term it is inevitable that air traffic will continue to grow, leading to further technical and operational challenges. The industry is reacting to these challenges and creating opportunities for growth through airport modernisation and expansion. With over $68 billion worth of infrastructure development currently underway across South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, we are witnessing the delivery of the highly advanced airports of the future. Global Transport Forum events provide a forum for airport owners, operators and suppliers to discuss the innovations across technology, operations, design and development that are driving the industry forward. At our events, attendees share their experiences and form the relationships that will harness these innovations and turn the vision into reality.

Maximising metro capacity

Coping with increasing urban populationsEver increasing urban populations are putting great strain on the world’s metro systems. There is a need for a fast, efficient and continuous service. Metros old and new, large and small, face many different challenges. The one challenge common to all is the need to maximise network capacity. One option is to build new lines; another is to extend existing lines. For optimum network efficiency, the ultimate aim is to maximise capacity on all lines, whether old or new.

Reducing headways, increasing profitabilityTo achieve this, metro operators must reduce headways. This requires investment in new lines and new technologies, such as automatic train operation. This must be balanced with the constant pressure to reduce operating costs. Network improvements must be brought online in a time and cost efficient manner, if they are to increase cost recovery ratios as well as capacity.

Global Transport Forum events bring together senior managers, technical specialists and project leaders from metro operators, city transport authorities and suppliers. They discuss the technical and operational challenges of designing, building, operating and maintaining the fast and efficient metros of the future.

Event scheduleOur events offer specialised technical and operational content.

The European rail network is operating at close to maximum capacity. Traditional signalling and train control systems significantly limit the frequency of trains and hamper interoperability. This results in high costs and an inefficient use of network capacity. Integrating advanced communications based signalling and train control systems will reduce maintenance and lifecycle costs, and deliver increased safety, efficiency and speed. The result is an increase in network capacity, offering rail infrastructure managers and operators greater revenue generating potential.

Signalling and Train Control 2010 brings together rail infrastructure managers, train operating companies, engineering consultants and suppliers. The industry’s innovators will discuss system requirements, technology selection, implementation and testing, helping to create a cost effective, efficient, interoperable and profitable European rail network.

High-speed rail is now connecting cities across Europe. High-speed rail delivers a clean, efficient and sustainable mode of rail transport that offers dramatically reduced travel times. With numerous projects either in the planning phase or currently underway, there are numerous technological choices that must be made across infrastructure, signalling and communications and rolling stock.

High-Speed Rail Design, Build and Operations 2010 is a forum for the world’s leading high-speed rail infrastructure managers, operators and technology providers. They will discuss the challenges of selecting and implementing the correct technologies in order to deliver the sustainable, fast and efficient high-speed networks of the future.

Europe has thousands of kilometres of existing rail infrastructure that is struggling to cope with ever increasing volumes of traffic. Whilst new rail infrastructure is being planned and delivered it is crucial that this existing infrastructure is efficiently maintained, renewed and upgraded. Firstly, rail infrastructure must remain functional, reliable and safe in order to cope with existing traffic. Secondly, well-planned maintenance, renewals and upgrades have the power to increase capacity on these overstretched networks.

At Infrastructure Maintenance, Renewals and Upgrades 2010 senior figures from rail infrastructure managers, contractors and suppliers will meet to discuss technical solutions to the challenges of managing rail infrastructure assets and planning and delivering maintenance, renewals and upgrades in a cost effective and efficient manner.

Whilst the global recession has had a huge impact on the aviation industry, the majority of the world’s major airports are still operating at close to maximum capacity. It is inevitable that in the long term air traffic will continue to grow, fuel prices will continue to rise and security will remain strict. Airport capacity will be stretched to the limit. Integrated, efficient airside and landside operations are essential in minimising delayed flights, long queues, lost baggage, wasted time and rising costs and in maximising existing capacity.

Airport Terminal Capacity 2010 focuses on the specific challenges facing senior management from airport owners, operators, ground support companies, consultancies and technology providers. The event will shape the operational strategies and highlight the technologies that will drive efficient ground support, cargo, baggage and passenger handling operations that will maximise competitiveness and profitability.

In addition to delivering increased efficiency across capacity to manage the capacity challenge in the short term, airports are undertaking major airport expansion and modernisation projects to meet the forecast mid-term growth in passenger numbers. With unprecedented airline expansions and ever-soaring traffic the Middle East is one region that is aggressively pursuing a series of major developments. However it is vital that these big-ticket projects are delivered on time and on budget, with minimal disruption to existing airport operations.

Airport Modernisation and Expansion 2010 will bring together airport owners, operators, design, engineering and construction companies, consultancies and technology providers. Industry leaders will address the specific technical and operational challenges of planning, designing and delivering airport modernisation and expansion projects in order to increase capacity and cope with future demands.
