  • About Global Voices

Global Voices is a leading citizen media community that has played a seminal role in the history of online media. In 2005, we set out to amplify local knowledge and unheard stories from citizen media around the world on a simple blog hosted at the Berkman Center. Today, were a global newsroom comprising more than 1,300 active authors, translators and editors working virtually and collaboratively across 130 countries, producing content in more than 30 languages. Global Voices is a thriving, vital component of the global media environment, helping individuals, media professionals, academics, and policymakers connect with the diverse voices coming from citizen and social media around the world.

Global Voices comprises four primary sections:

    - THE GLOBAL VOICES NEWSROOM creates an alternative global news stream by translating, curating and analyzing the most important and interesting stories in global citizen media, including text, photos, podcasts and video.

    - THE LINGUA PROJECT translates Global Voices' content into more than 30 languages, including Spanish, French, Malagasy, Macedonian, Portuguese, Chinese, Bangla, Arabic, Farsi and Japanese.

    - GLOBAL VOICES ADVOCACY documents and reports on threats to online expression, provides training and support for community members and others facing direct threats because of their work online, and advocates for policies that support an open Internet.

    - RISING VOICES promotes inclusion and diversity among producers of citizen media worldwide by providing micro-grants, training support and online tutorials, and creating peer learning networks with communities that are underrepresented online.

Board of Directors Rebecca MacKinnon (chair), Ethan Zuckerman, Rosental Alves, Akwe Amosu, Stephen King, Claire Ulrich (staff representative), Jillian York (volunteers representative), Marta Cooper (volunteers representative).

  • A Message from Our Executive Director

    Dear Friends,

When I joined Global Voices back in 2008, wed just been let loose from our original home at the Harvard Universitys Berkman Center and were beginning to find our footing as an independent nonprofit incorporated in the Netherlands, but based everywhere in the world. Since then, our community has grown nearly tenfold, with over 1,300 active writers, translators and editors producing stories in more than 30 languages. Weve strived to create an organization dedicated to serving this community of creative, energetic contributors for whom sharing stories, ideas, and knowledge is a passion and a way of life. Weve aimed to keep our staff small, our overhead as low as possible, and to find inventive ways to work for our community and fulfill our mission.

Global Voices is a hybrid of community and organization. Our work is funded by foundations, individuals and some corporate donors, and through production partnerships. We also volunteer our time and energy. We fulfill our collective goal of using the Internet to share information across cultures, languages and nations through writing, advocacy for online freedom of expression, training and mentoring, and projects to support communities that face economic, social, and political barriers to participation. At Global Voices, we aim to build a community that supports an open, welcoming, collaborative Internet culture. In the following pages, youll see how we do it.

    Sincerely,

    Ivan SigalExecutive Director

  • Global Voices in 2012

Citizen media and social media have undergone rapid changes in the past two years. The advent of new platforms and the increasing dominance of services such as Twitter and Facebook have resulted in many more people communicating online and shaping discourse. Along with the growing influence of large corporate players there has been a boom in purpose-built citizen projects around the world, reflecting the diverse interests of many communities.

In 2012, the Global Voices community worked on long-term, strategic planning with a view to expanding and deepening our work and ensuring that we continue to find creative and effective approaches to fulfill our organizations mission.

In 2012, we continued to see evidence of the impact of our work in 2011 around the Arab uprisings, which brought with them a mass recognition of the potential for digital media discourse and activism to effect and influence political and social change. As the Princeton University sociologist Zeynep Tufekci wrote of our Arab Spring coverage in the Journal of Communications:

Years of activism, blogging, training, conferences, and key platforms like those provided by theNGO Global Voices meant that there was already a community...who knew each other, had often met in person, and trusted each other. Many of the activists who would later play prominent roles had met in person in venues such as the annual Global Voices conference, Arab Techies Collective in Cairo, 2008, Arab Bloggers Summits in Beirut in 2008 and 2009, and the Re:publica Digital Media Conference in Berlin. These networks were not just practical and political, but also helped sustain a core network of activists over time.1

Global Voices focus on building trusted communities in the citizen media space has been fruitful to date, and we recognize that rapid changes in technology mean that we always need to examine our work critically, to ensure that we continue to be relevant and useful.

Special CoverageIn the first half of 2012 our special coverage encompassed citizen reporting of vital events around the world. We built and launched numerous special coverage sections aggregating articles on topics heavily covered by GV and likely of special interest. In addition to ongoing work from 2011 on Europe in Crisis, Languages and the Internet, coverage on Middle Eastern conflicts, and conflict in the Caucasus, we launched sections on International Relations and Security and Myanmars Rohingya crisis. globalvoicesonline.org/specialcoverage/

Republication and co-productionNumerous media outlets have republished GV material in multiple languages and embedded GV RSS feeds into their content. By the end of 2012 we had established more than 25 ongoing content republication partnerships. Prominent new and recurring partners include The New York

Many other regional and local online publications pick up our content on an ad hoc basis.

In 2012 we launched or continued several original co-production projects, including:

    - a content creation project with support from the United Nations Population Fund in support of the 7 Billion Actions Project

    - a year-long content creation and co-publication project with the International Relations and Security Network, which ensures that our content is seen by security policy analysts in four languages

Media Appearances In 2012 we made appearances in media outlets such as PRIs The World, Swedish National Television, France TV 5, Forbes, Wired, Boston Globe, The Guardian, arstechnica.com, Al Jazeera, Scientific American, boingboing.net, Bloom-berg, Foreign Policy, Netzpolitik, OWNR.fr, Radio France International and NPR. globalvoicesonline.org/about/media-archive/

LinguaIts thanks to the Lingua translation section that Global Voices can call itself a truly multilingual project, and is in fact one of the most polyglot sites on the Internet. The Lingua community is the fastest growing area of our organization, and Linguas teams of volunteer translators translate our content actively into 18 languages, and more than 30 overall. In 2012 Lingua volunteers also published original content in Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Italian, Arabic, Chinese and Bangla, and occasional stories in other languages. In 2012, a total of 726 stories were written first in languages other than English. globalvoicesonline.org/lingua/

  • Global Voices Advocacy

In 2012 Global Voices Advocacy began preparing a strategic expansion that concentrates on building partnerships with other relevant freedom of expression organizations. This shift includes supporting institutional partners to contribute content to the GVA site, and sharing methodologies and tracking of threats to citizen media producers and activists on our Threatened Voices platform. Key partners with whom we have built relationships include the Electronic Frontier Foundation, WITNESS, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Article 19, PEN International, Bolo Bhi (Pakistan) and CELE at the University of Palermo in Argentina; as well as smaller, regionally or nationally focused freedom of expression advocacy and policy groups such as Chiles Derechos Digitales. Additionally, our strategy includes a considerable expansion of reporting on a range of online freedom of expression issues, beyond attacks on individual bloggers and digital activists and tactics for advocacy. Were looking at a range of broader policy issues, from internet governance to corporate behavior, that influence online rights.

At the end of 2011 Global Voices Advocacy began producing the weekly Netizen Report, a review of the challenges, victories, and emerging trends in Internet rights around the world, which has become essential reading for many in the rights community.

  • Rising Voices

In five years, Rising Voices has seen an exponential growth in applications for its micro-grant competition from communities interested in setting up or supporting citizen media initiatives. In 2012, we received over 1,200 applications from more than 100 different countriesnearly double the number we received in 2011. In 2012 we selected the following six grantees: Xela Civic Libraries (Guatemala), Food Tales from Nablus (Palestine), Powhatan Language Revitalization Project (Powhatan Confederacy, USA), The Ach Words (Paraguay), Karen Language Citizen Journalism (Burma/Thailand), Llaqtaypa Riymaynin (Peru). Having been able to fund only about 1% of the pool of grant applicantsover 3,000 individuals and organizations in total have appliedour next strategic focus is on designing initiatives to engage and support the other 99%. Our vision is to support regional hubs and peer networks that facilitate learning and best practices, and identification of local resources and broad-based, locally rooted efforts. Our aim is to link local resources to global networks to benefit the thousands of citizen media projects seeking support.

In 2012 we continued the Conectndonos series of workshops with an event in Ecuador. These three-day events bring together emerging bloggers and creators of citizen media from underrepresented communities as a means to building the foundation for national networks of technical assistance and support.

  • Other 2012 Highlights

Global Voices Citizen Media SummitOur bi-annual Summit may be the most important organizational tool for our community, ensuring that we build and deepen relationships among contributors. The Summit also allows us to develop our strategic planning for our projects and continued fulfillment of our mission on the basis of community ideas and input.

Our 2012 Summit took place on June 29-July 3 in Nairobi, Kenya. The biggest in our history, the Summit comprised an internal meeting attended by over 160 community members and academics from over 60 countries; and a two-day public event where we were joined by academics, journalists, technologists, activists, representatives of NGOs and foundations and local bloggers. The Summit attracted 300- 320 attendees on each of the public days. We began working on the 2012 Summit program months in advance, setting up virtual working groups to focus on key issues ranging from our editorial policies to advocacy, from collaboration across regions to skills training. We expect that much of our strategic vision going forward will be the result of the large-scale collaborative process that is the Summit.

  • Summit Highlights- The results of the second edition of the Breaking Borders Awards, an initiative by Global Voices and Google recognizing outstanding projects using the Internet to promote freedom of expression, were announced at the public meeting. Awards went to Mamfakinch from Morocco and Atlatszo.hu from Hungary. summit2012.globalvoicesonline.org/2012/07/announcing-the-winners-of-the-breaking-borders-awards/

    - Global Voices partnered with the Kenyan organization Map Kibera Trust to bring together members of both communities to share experiences and participate in a joint citizen journalism activity in the slum districts of Kibera and Mathare. rising.globalvoicesonline.org/blog/2012/07/07/citizen-journalism-partnership-with-map-kibera-during-gv-summit/

    - A group of 30 invited academics whose work focuses on citizen media movements met in parallel with the Global Voices internal meeting, giving rise to rich opportunities for information sharing and cross-fertilization. Members of the academic community had the opportunity to meet and interact with an active community of practitioners who perhaps a function as a microcosm of citizen media more broadly.

In collaboration with the Bloggers Association of Kenya, Global Voices organized a contest offering free Summit participation to the six bloggers writing the best posts on the topic How citizen media can help ensure peaceful elections in Kenya in 2012-13. summit2012.globalvoicesonline.org/2012/06/kenyan-bloggers-competition-meet-the-winners/

  • Innovation AwardsIn 2012 we launched an internal competition to support innovation within the Global Voices community. Community members were invited to propose projects that support the broader mission of the organization. A community vote, followed by board approval, ensured that the projects were widely supported within the community. This model echoes the development of successful Global Voices initiatives such as Lingua, which grew out of the initiative of community members rather than a centralized planning process.

The three projects we selected in 2012 are: GV BOOKS: a project to publish e-books based on GV content and related subjects. GV Books released two titles in 2012: EU in Crisis and African Voices of Hope and Change. By the end of 2012 EU in Crisis had been translated into Italian, Arabic and Spanish. books.globalvoicesonline.org COJIRO: an online translation platform that facilitates citizen media translation communities. https://github.com/netalab/cojiro/wiki FILMING OUR POSTS: a project to create GV videos, initially focused on Latin American content. http://videoactivo.globalvoicesonline.org/
