Threats 2020…
40% of Himalayan Glaciers would vanish.25% wildlife will perish.Mumbai’s Nariman Point will be submerged.Dengue and Cholera will spread.Ganga delta will turn infertile.
….as said by the latest UN panel report
What is Global Warming?
Global Warming is when the Earth heats up. Ithappens when the green house gases trap heat
and light from sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This is
called Green House effect.
Green House Gases
Gases involved in Green house effect are
-CO2 - Carbon Dioxide
-NO2 - Nitrogen Dioxide -CFC’s - Chloro fluoro carbons -CO - Carbon Monoxide
-SO2 - Sulfur dioxide -Lead -VOC’s ( Volatile organic Compounds ) -Ozone
Green House Effect
THE GREEN HOUSE EFFECT- Advantage
The Earth is covered by a blanket of gases which allow light energy from the sun to reach the Earth’s Surface, where it is converted to heat energy. Most of the heat is re-radiated towards space, but some is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is natural effect which keeps the Earth’s Temperature at a level necessary to support life.
THE ENHANCED GREENHOUSE EFFECT- Disadvantage
Human activity – particularly burning fossil fuels (Coal, Oil, Natural gas) and land clearing – is generating most of the greenhouse gases. Most of the Scientists are convinced that this will trap more heat and raise the earth’s surface temperature.
Impact of Enhanced Green House effect
5°C is the expected rise in overall global temperatures by the end of 21st century.
Sea levels will increase 40 cm higher by 2100 and 50 million people in coastal India would be displaced by flooding.
379/PM is the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, the highest in 6,50,000 years. This concentration is increasing very fast. Whole life on Earth comes to end if it reaches 500/PM.
Reasons for Global Warming
Automotive Applications
- Use of Automobiles has the major share.
- Tail (Exhaust) end Emissions increase the green house gases.
- Excessive use of fuels demanding more resources.
Thermal Power Generation
- Usage of coal reducing the fossil resources.
- Burning of coal increasing the pollution.Chimney Top emissions in Factories.
How can we bring down the CO2
Level? Replace your bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps. Use solar devises for heating. Construct Green buildings. Turn off your computers when not in use. Switch off the lights while sleeping or when office shuts
down. Check your car or motorcycle tyres. Buy energy-efficient appliances. Buy fuel-efficient vehicles…switch to bio fuels or e-bikes. Walk, don’t drive.
What can we do to bring down CO2 Level?
Save paper to save trees. Grow more trees. Use public transport. Get your vehicles pollution checked from time to
time. Switch to wind power. Stop the usage of plastic bags. Don’t keep your fridge doors open for too long. Educate others.
What government can do?
Should improve public transport facilities. Renewable sources should be used to produce
electricity. Should take measures to educate people
regarding usage of electricity and fuels. Strict laws should be made for companies to
change their products as eco-friendly. Implementing policies regarding Electrical
Vehicles which encourage the people to use them.
CONCLUSION
Lets be responsible in reducing the rate of global warming by following the precautionary steps and make earth a better place to live in.
