What is Global Warming?Global warming or climate change is thegradual increase of the average temperature

    of the Earth

The average temperature of the Earth'ssurface is around 59F or 13 C. Greenhouse

Gases in the atmosphere hold in heat

*Without these gases, the Earths surfacetemperature would drop to around 0 F.

    Temperature ChangeGlobal surface temperature increased0.74 0.18 C (1.33 0.32 F) during

the 100 years ending in 2005.

    Climate model projections summarized

by the IPCC indicate that averageglobal surface temperature will likelyrise a further 1.1 to 6.4 C (2.0 to11.5 F) during the twenty-first century.

Greenhouse GasesGreenhouse gases are the reason thereis Global Warming which is trappingheat in the earth.

Greenhouse gases are caused naturallyand covers the earth in a blanket, and iscaused by Carbon Dioxide and fossilfuels.

Thinning of the ozone layerThe thinning of the ozone layer is mainlydue to chlorofluorocarbons (CFC).

Once in the stratosphere, CFC arebroken down by ultraviolet rays.

As a result, the highly reactive chlorineradicals (Cl) are release.

These chlorine radicals break downozone molecules, O3 in a chain reaction.

    ChlorofluorocarbonsChlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a

group of man-made substancescontaining chlorine, fluorine and

carbon. They were invented in the

1930s for use in fridges, but haveother uses, including aerosols.

The EffectsWater levels will rise in oceans

The timing of the seasons will changeIncreased spread of disease

    Stronger hurricanes and storms

Animals change behaviorMore plant & animals will become extinct

    The temperature will rise

    Effects on sea levels

    Warmer Seas and Melting Ice

When the Earth warms, the oceans willwarm and expand causing an increase inthe level of the sea

FloodingHigher sea levels will threaten the low-lying coastal areas of the world such as

    the Netherlands and Bangladesh.

Effects on agricultureFood & Water Shortages

The effect of a change in weather on plantgrowth may lead to food and watershortages in some countries of the world.

    Low-Lying Land

Low-lying agricultural land is at risk fromrising sea levels.

    Effects on health

Effects of Warmer TemperaturesWarm temperatures can increase local

air pollution, which in turn can lead to

an increase in breathing problems andrespiratory diseases.

Effects on healthEffects of Extreme Events

Extreme events may lead to a largenumber of deaths at a set time. Forexample, a landslide or flood could wipeout a large number of people. Events

like this are set to increase as globalwarming takes place.

    Effects on healthInfectious Diseases

Many infectious diseases only appear inwarm areas. Warmer trends wouldenable insects and other diseasecarriers to expand their range.

Mosquitoes and other insects willspread further across the globe.

    Walking or Biking

Fossil fuel gives off the most greenhouse

gases. To use less fossil fuel, you should walk orbike to school or work if you are near.

It will save energy and cause lessgreenhouse gases which will be a bighelp to stop Global Warming.

TreesTrees help by absorbing26 pounds ofgreenhouse gases eachyear.

They can give usoxygen to help usbreathe.

One tree producesenough oxygen for afamily of four!

Saving Energy-In order to stop global

warming we have to saveenergy. Fossil fuel energyproduces greenhouse

gases. They are the mainthing we need to stop.Shut things that use fossilfuel off after you are doneusing it as much as

    possible. It will help!

RecyclingRecycling helps saveenergy and lets youreuse things over andover again.

    To make things fun you

can make crafts out ofthe stuff you recycle.

So please recycle cans, bottles, and aluminum

to save energy. You can recycle oldproducts that use a lotof energy to get energyefficient things. So

    Please Save Energy.
