WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
Temperatures are rising because we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and oil, and by clearing forests.
![Page 8: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
• Greenhouse Gas: A gas which traps the sun's heat:
![Page 9: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
• Greenhouse Gas: A gas which traps the sun's heat:
• Water vapor (H2O)
• Carbon dioxide (CO2) - exhaust from cars and power plants.
• Methane (CH4) - from decomposing organic matter.
![Page 10: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Carbon dioxide and methane levels are at their highest levels in the past 420,000 years.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
• A scientific body formed in 1988 to evaluate the risk of climate change caused by human activity.
![Page 14: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Tradable Pollution Quotas
• A country that wants to exceed its quota of greenhouse emissions can buy part of another country’s quota of polluting gases.
![Page 15: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Kyoto Protocol
• A 1997 international treaty designed to limit global greenhouse gas emissions during the years 2008 - 2012.
• Goal: to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions 5% below 1990 levels.
![Page 16: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Kyoto Protocol
• The United States and Australia have not ratified the Kyoto Protocol.
• The U.S. is responsible for about a quarter of the emissions that have been blamed for global warming.
![Page 17: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

Who is responsible?
![Page 19: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Most scientists blame industrialization:
Automotive Industry (low fuel economy)
Oil companies (fossil fuels)
![Page 20: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Power plants (coal) Agri-business (biofuels,
deforestation, cattle producing methane)
Logging Industry (deforestation)
![Page 21: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Consequences of global warming
![Page 22: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Catastrophic weather such as
hurricanes will increase.
![Page 23: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Melting polar icecaps will raise ocean levels; the Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050.
![Page 24: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Heat waves, droughts, and wildfires will be more frequent.
![Page 25: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Up to 300,000 people a year will die – partly from the spread of tropical diseases.
![Page 26: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
More than a million species worldwide could be extinct by 2050.
![Page 27: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)

Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet, devastating
coastal areas worldwide.
![Page 29: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The future of our coastal cities?

Between 1970 and 2004 global greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 70 %
![Page 31: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)

• From 1971 to 2005 CO2 vehicle emissions rose from 1.8 billion tons per year to 4.6 billion tons per year.
• The average global air temperature rose between 0.5 and 0.74 degrees C during the past century.
• An average 2 degrees C warming is predicted by 2100.
• Sea level has risen between 10 to 25 cm in the last 100 years.
![Page 33: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
The Earth is getting warmer.
What causes the warming is hotly debated.
![Page 34: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
The Argument:
Human causes
(Anthropogenic):Carbon dioxide (CO2)
exhaust from cars and power plants.
Methane gas from waste
Deforestation
![Page 35: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
The Argument:
Natural causes: Some claim the sun is getting hotter. Also, the earth goes through natural cycles of climate change.
![Page 36: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)

Is Global Warming for Real?
![Page 39: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)

Is it already too late?
![Page 41: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
an inconvenient truth
![Page 42: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)

The big debate is political:
![Page 46: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Global warming's harmful potential has been proved; now we must prevent it from getting worse.
OR
The evidence is inconclusive; trying to prevent global warming could destroy the economy.
![Page 47: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Who is responsible for slowing global warming, and at what cost?
![Page 48: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
Industrialization is the primary cause of global warming.
![Page 49: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
Are alternative sources of energy the answer?
![Page 50: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
The Kyoto Protocol – effective or not?
![Page 51: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Industries shouldcut greenhouse gas emissions now.
![Page 52: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
What are the costs of slowing global warming?
![Page 53: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
Can you have economic growth and protect the earth at the same time?
![Page 54: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
Emissionsquota trading
Will it work?
![Page 55: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
Is unlimited economic growth really desirable?
![Page 56: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
practice debate
![Page 57: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Industrial growth
should be slowed or
limited in order to
curb global warming.
Topic 1:
![Page 58: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
Topic 2:
Do newly-developed economies, like India and China, have a right to increase their industrial emissions?
![Page 59: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
Something to think about:
![Page 60: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
• Climate change may just be too big
and too vague a problem for
people to want to invest in trying to
solve. People like to fund things
they know will work.
![Page 61: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
• It will be the political process and
fear of the unknown that will
generate the needed response by
developed countries to mitigate
carbon emissions worldwide, if
this response is generated at all.
![Page 62: Global warming ppt](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062404/554a8048b4c90579288b5426/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
Thank you
