So what is globalisation?• The term began its use in 1990’s.• Prior to that geographers talked just about the ‘global
economy’• There was then a growing realisation that economic
changes were also being accompanied by cultural, demographic, political and environmental changes on a worldwide scale.
• There are a wealth of GOOD and BAD views on globalisation. Can you think of any?

Globalisation is nothing new Globalisation is nothing new though right?though right?
It is nothing new in the sense that continents and countries have been connected for centuries through:
Trade – Especially after 1492 when Columbus reached the Americas.
Colonialism – By the end of the 19th C, the British empire directly controlled one quarter of the world and its people.
Cooperation – Since WW1, international organisations similar to today’s UN have existed.

Globalisation is nothing new Globalisation is nothing new though right?though right?
What makes modern globalisation different is:
• A lengthening of connections between people and places.
• Products are being sources from further away than ever before.
• There is a growing spatial division of labour.
• A deepening connection to other people and places in more areas of our lives.

What are the AGENTS of globalisation and why has it increased in the last 30
years?• Trans National Companies (TNC’s)• Transport • Communications• International organisations• Increased trade• New markets
Make brief notes from Page 92,93 to explain how each of the agents above have led to increased globalisation.
