    Health

Philadelphia has an incredibly diverse population and so does SLA. They are

both affected by the same problems. One of the major political issues in the UnitedStates is healthcare. Right now not everyone has healthcare because not everyone canafford it. By the nurses office there is information on how to receive healthcare. Thisinformation is given in both English and Spanish to accommodate anyone whose firstlanguage might be Spanish.

The Hispanic population in the United States has been on the rise andPhiladelphia is no exception. In fact, The city's Hispanic population has grown 44.5%since 1990. As the Hispanic population grew the non-Hispanic white populationdeclined 17.3%. This leaves a population that is, on average, more economicallydisadvantaged and less likely to be able to pay for health insurance.

    Trade

All over the United States there are countless products reading Made in China. The fact is that China is the United States biggest trade partner, and in 2009, weimported $296.4 billion of goods from them. It is very hard to avoid Chinese products. This photo was taken in the SLA school store and shows the boxes that contain thebackpacks freshman receive.

These goods need to be available cheaply, quickly, and in large amounts, making China the obvious choice. The United States is completely dependent onChinese goods in the same way that China is dependent on the United Statesspending. Its a perfect example of how international economies are intertwined.

    Education

A company that publishes textbooks for the international market manufactures these

textbooks. Pearson is actually based in London, but the publishing information listscountries on multiple continents. This shows the international nature of education. Thistextbook is used in SLA anatomy classrooms, but it could also be used anywhere in theworld. This same science content is thought to be so good and standard that it can beused worldwide.

Clearly, the entire world can't use the same history textbooks, but the fact that theinternational community can even agree on science is shocking. This is also a kind ofinternational information trade. The Internet makes it easy for us to share information, but we even share textbooks.

    Science and Technology

This is the absolute heart of SLA and a massive piece of technology. Like mostof the technology used day to day by Americans, it was not made in America. A lot ofthe technology now comes from Asia and is imported to the United States. It is not just aonce-and-done type of importing and exporting, parts and materials come from all overthe world. Plastic bags for a supermarket in Germany are made in Bangladesh withmaterials produced in Korea, which in turn are based on intermediates from South

America. Those intermediates are produced with European plasticizers and solvents, based on Russian crude oil.

This one piece of technology could have parts from all over the world, but here itis, safely at home, in the third floor of SLA, and we use it to access the rest of the world.

    Migration and Colonization

This ad does not say it applies only to certain languages, but it is fairly clear thatSpanish would be a focus due to the large Hispanic population in Philadelphia. Secondto Latin America, the greatest number of immigrants come to the United States from

Asia, and many of them bring children. These children want to have the experience ofan American education but language barriers can be problematic.

To accommodate these students, the school district must be prepared to dealwith second language learners, like any other large city with a large immigrant

population. Though immigration to the United States has recently declined due toeconomic issues, it remains strong.

    Energy and the Environment

The largest global issue is currently global climate change, and one of the majorcontributors to that issue is automobile exhaust. One main alternative transport methodis biking. All over the world, people use bikes instead of cars and are helping theenvironment. They burn no gasoline and produce no waste. Even though biking is ageneral step in the right direction, it will take much more global effort than that to reduceemissions levels. It truly is a global effort, as we all have to share the same air.

Whether for our love of biking or our love of the earth, many SLA students andteachers ride their bikes to school. All of these bikes are stored in the main stairway, and since it got warmer, the amount of bikes has been astounding.

    Economy

There is currently much talk about the United States ability to complete in theinternational market. It is believed that American students will not be as well prepared

as their international counterparts. We need to be able to to improve Americas positionin an increasingly global market because scientific and technological advances canfurther economic growth. This has lead to a push to make sure American children arelearning, particularly in the areas of math and science.

I know that I felt that pressure in high school. It was mainly about learning, butthere was always the pressure of having to get a job. This stack of magazines alsoseems to push the agenda of going to college and getting jobs.

    Society and Culture

America used to be known as a giant melting pot where many different culturesassimilated. It seems that it is moving away from having one culture to embracingmultiple cultures. It makes sense that many different cultures are seen and embracedinside of the country. The old melting pot metaphor is giving way to new metaphorssuch as salad bowl and mosaic, mixtures of various ingredients that keep theirindividual characteristics.

This flyer shows an attempt by SLA students to celebrate the various culturesrepresented. There are pictures of different types of foods, such as sushi and pasta thatare typical of different cultures. There are various cultures in the city of Philadelphia andin SLA.

    Human Rights

According to the official page of the State Department, The protection offundamental human rights was a foundation stone in the establishment of the UnitedStates over 200 years ago. It still, supposedly, remains a priority today. It seems that itis almost fashionable to have an interest in human rights, mainly in desperately poorcountries far away. Americans seem to try and relate to people that live far away undercompletely different circumstances.

When looking for a representation of human rights activism, the first thing thatcame to mind was this collage in Senorita Manuels room. It is all about different humanrights issues and people both here and aboard. We have a club in school dedicated tocommunity service; clearly it is still something at least some people care about.

    Gender

American culture and sterotypes are very popular aboard, and western culture

has greatly influenced other cultures, and other cultures opinions of America. Smilingand friendliness - as American as McDonald's - sends the wrong signals abroad. Thereare many misconceptions about American women that cause trouble abroad.Particularly in more conservative societies, the promotion of western women can bedisturbing.

This poster may look to us as simply promoting the normal American activity ofprom, but there are cultures where putting on short dresses and dancing with men isconsidered scandalous. When this image is exported to other countries it gives anopinion of American girls that is not always true and not always helpful.
