Sligo, Co. SligoSituated on a coastal plain facing the Atlantic Ocean, Sligo is located on low gravel hills on the banks of the Garavogue River between Lough Gill and the estuary leading to Sligo Bay. With a population of 20,000, Sligo is a historic, cultural, commercial, industrial, retail and service centre. Served by rail, port and road, Sligo is a very popular tourist location being situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with many literary and cultural associations.

Sligo has a diverse population of varying nationalities and religious denominations making it a hub for integration.

Knocknarea, a limestone hill in Sligo, is believed to contain an unexcavated Neolithic passage tomb. Hiking this hill also provides a wonderful view of Sligo and Ballysadare.

Strandhill Beach in Sligo is known as one of Europe’s key surfing sites.

Sligo is also home to Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. Built in the 4th millennium BCE, this is the largest and one of the oldest cemeteries in Ireland, and sits in front of a beautiful mountain landscape.
