TRANSCRIPT
LATEST TRENDS
The uncertainty caused by the Icelandic volcano eruption that is
affecting air transport in Europe continues to impact fresh seafood trade throughout the continent. Prices of fresh seafood generally increased from April to May. The Brussels Seafood Exposition,
normally the main meeting place for seafood traders in Europe, was also impacted by the volcanic activity. Fewer visitors and a lower
number of trade deals indicate a more difficult trading environment.
The Greek economic crisis and the resulting lower value of the EUR could result in fewer products entering the European market. Traders
are watching carefully to see how European summer holidays are impacted by the European crisis. At present, the likelihood is that
fewer will travel elsewhere this year, so fish consumption and demand will be negatively impacted.
GROUNDFISH
Demand for groundfish in
Europe is rather
dull at the moment, and
supply is more than sufficient. As
a result prices are likely to start moving downward
soon. Summer months are
generally not a
good sales period for groundfish species in Europe, thus the overall
sentiment is unlikely to improve.

FLATFISH
Sales of turbot in Spain were good, with reasonable demand. This
species has the advantage of being
produced locally, and thus distribution does not rely on air
transport to reach the market place. Prices will continue to rise. As expected, prices of larger sizes
have increased but it expected that prices of all sizes will continue
growing while demand is strong.
SMALL PELAGICS
The market for small pelagics is very quiet at present. Trade is just starting to pick
up. Mackerel stocks are sold out and therefore there will be nothing on offer until the
new season. Stocks of round frozen herring are extremely low at present and sales are correspondingly slack. This has allowed prices to Russia and Ukraine to rise
slightly. Demand for herring fillets in Europe is extremely low and prices are under
pressure because considerable stocks are available in Poland.
TUNA
The price for purse seiner caught tuna in the all important Bangkok market shot up to USD
1 500/tonne for May delivery, an increase of about 30% from April. Slow catches in the Western and Central Pacific were blamed for the sharp increase in prices.
In the Seychelles the market price of skipjack increased during April from around EUR 700/tonne to around EUR 1 050/tonne as boat owners raised their prices to levels
equivalent to the Bangkok market minus the cost of freight.
The price of skipjack also increased
in Latin America where suppliers of tuna sold skipjack to canneries in
Ecuador at USD 1 550/tonne for
May delivery. The price of skipjack
in Ghana rose from around EUR 670/tonne to around EUR 950/tonne.
The EU’s catch documentation
regulation has created two different
market prices in Bangkok for yellowfin 10 kg/up. Sellers able to provide properly endorsed catch documentation for fish
caught by fishing boats with EU sanitary numbers and IUU certificates were able to sell
yellowfin 10 kg/up for USD 2 150/tonne cnf Bangkok. The same fish without a valid catch
certificate and an EU sanitary number for the catching vessel fetched USD 1 700/tonne. Some Thai canners are not even giving quotes on enquiries from European buyers, as fish
having both a valid catch certificate and an EU health certificate are in very short supply.

During April the price of yellowfin 10 kg/up increased from EUR 1 300 to EUR 1 600/tonne FOB Seychelles. In Spain and Italy the price of yellowfin 10 kg/up increased to EUR 1 750
and 1 850/tonne, respectively. Driven by the increasing cost of qualifying raw material, the price of double cleaned
yellowfin loins increased to USD 6 350/tonne DDP Italy. Skipjack loins sold for EUR 3 000/tonne DDP Spain.
CEPHALOPODS
A ban on octopus fishing in the
Central Eastern Atlantic started on 20 April, but even before this date
catches were diminishing. The late
start of the biological rest period will mean fewer octopus products
will reach the market during
summer months. As a result, prices
are expected to move up quite substantially in the coming months.
Some traders are buying cheap Asian octopus, selling at about EUR
2.00/kg lower than the Moroccan
product. Squid supply from the South West Atlantic is very
disappointing, and landings will come to an end before the end of the season. As coldstorages are
empty, and demand is very good, these factors will lead to higher
prices during the summer months.
CRUSTACEANS
The Spanish market continues to be the largest shrimp market in the EU. Despite the economic crisis, Spanish imports in 2009 were almost on a par with the 2008 imports,
at 160 000 tonnes. In the last quarter of the year, imports were stable at 55 000 tonnes. Argentina was the main exporter of shrimp to the Spanish market in 2009, with 36 000 tonnes or almost one quarter of the supply. Argentine exports increased
strongly in 2009 (+27%) helped by record catches. However, the unit value of Argentine shrimp was very low in 2009, only EUR 4.68/kg, compared with EUR
6.21/kg in 2008.
SALMON
Atlantic salmon prices have reached new highs with Norwegian salmon growers
reporting record results for the first quarter. Thanks to good demand, prices could still
go higher before new production volumes come to market in June – July, although a
cold spring is delaying growth. Norwegian exports for January-April (4 months)

showed a 16% rise in volume to 279 000 tonnes (round weight equivalent) and a massive 31% jump in value to NOK 8.7 billion. Fillet sales were especially strong with
fresh fillets increasing 47% from last year to 22 700 tonnes and frozen fillets by 40% to 10 300 tonnes.
At ESE in Brussels, Chilean producers started to offer limited
quantities for delivery towards the
second half of the year with more production coming on stream in
2011. Combined with recent good news about vaccine development
for the ISA virus and reports of significantly higher stocking levels,
there is renewed hope that supply
will improve and Chile will again be an important player from 2011
onwards.
FRESHWATER FISH
Freshwater species are not in high demand on the European market at the moment. The weakening
EUR is creating a situation where domestic markets, such as China,
Viet Nam, Brazil and Malaysia,
might be more attractive for producers than the risky European
market, with uncertainty about
currency rates and availability of
flights.
SEABASS AND SEABREAM
Bass and bream prices appear to
have reached a peak after a
significant rise in April. Bream prices remain somewhat higher
than bass at the moment and
demand is reportedly good for both species. Supply will increase over
the coming months as the new generation fish reaches market size during summer.
