Latest trends
COVID-19 is still negatively influencing the European fish market, although there have been some surprising developments. Markets
actually picked up for certain species such as shrimp and cephalopods, which had previously been amongst the worst affected during the months of March and April when food service
establishments closed. Consumers in Northern Europe, rather than travelling to the Southern part of the continent for holidays as they
would normally have done during the summer, decided instead to stay home and get their fill of Mediterranean cuisine at their local restaurants.
GROUNDFISH
The quantity of wet-salted cod fillets consumed in Italy in any
given part of the year is always affected by the outside temperature. Summer is generally a period of low consumption,
with the majority of sales concentrated during the winter when cod recipes are generally more popular. On the B2B side, the situation is slightly different because the weather conditions are keeping
fishing vessels in port and there’s less stock of raw material available as a result. The net result is expected to be a slight rise
in the price of raw material.
The hake market in Europe is strong this year. COVID-19 has increased consumption of frozen products at the expense of fresh
fish, and hake is the premier species for frozen products. Prices of frozen hake, for all product forms, are increasing.
past ten years, Russia’s TAC has fluctuated between 2.76 million tonnes and 3.21 million tonnes.
The COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted economic hardship on the European consumer, and has brought about a number of
changes in consumer purchasing habits. Instead of buying

The current 3-month FAD closure in the
Western and Central Pacific (WCP) will conclude at the end of this month. Fishing
is generally very poor with only a handful of good fishing days. Raw material
inventories at Thai canneries remain moderate. As fishing in the WCP remains
poor, skipjack prices continue to increase.
Catches in the Indian Ocean have improved to moderate and the same can be said for raw material inventories at local
canneries. With the improvement in catches, skipjack prices have fallen while yellowfin
prices remain stable.
The first IATTC ‘veda’ is currently in force until 8 October. Catches have been
moderate for the 54 percent of the fleet that are still out fishing. Raw material
inventories at local canneries in Manta, Ecuador, remain low due to the reduced
landings. Several WCP and Atlantic carriers have been diverted to South America to
make up for the shortfall in local raw material. Both skipjack and yellowfin
prices are increasing.
Fishing in the Atlantic Ocean is poor and raw material inventories have fallen to a
low level. As a result, both skipjack and
yellowfin prices continue to increase in
Abidjan.
European prices for skipjack remain stable
in Spain while the price of yellowfin has fallen due to lower demand. The market
price for cooked, single cleaned skipjack
loins is steady.

Herring and sprat landings are slow in Poland. Herring prices have decreased, while
sprat prices have risen and are now
approaching those of herring.
Norwegian exports of whole frozen mackerel increased sharply during the first
seven months of the year, from 83 600 tonnes in 2019 to 120 000 tonnes in 2020.
The unit value declined by 8 percent in 2020 to USD 1.80 per kg. China and the
Republic of Korea are the main destinations for these products, with Japan as the third
largest market.
Squid catches started quite well in South Africa when the season re-opened after
the 3-month closure period on 1 July. But
they have now deteriorated again to lower levels and there is currently no pressure
to move stock. Catch volumes are low and the local currency has been firming
against what many believe should be a weak environment, meaning that having
squid in cold storage is equivalent to hedging against a future downturn in the

exchange rate. The prices of the smaller sizes have risen now that the excess of stock
has been sold and current shipments comprise a balanced mix of sizes.
The supply of octopus in Indonesia is reportedly stable and prices are the same. Demand will be rising over the next couple of months but from a low base and given
that customers have built up stocks, the price increase is expected to be limited.
COVID-19 had a surprising impact on shrimp sales in Northern Europe during the
summer months. Demand was excellent as customers that would otherwise go on their summer holidays went out dining at their local restaurants instead. The good weather
meant this dining could be done outdoors, minimizing COVID-19 contagion risk. Imports of shrimp, both coldwater and warmwater, were strong and demand was firm,
pushing
prices up across the board. This vibrant demand in Europe coincided with reduced
production in India, but strong arrivals from Ecuador made up the shortfall. However, the winter forecast looks somewhat different: dining inside is considered risky and
consumers will be less likely to venture into restaurants. Estimates suggest that consumption of shrimp in Europe during the closing quarter of the year will be just 70
percent of the sales recorded during the same period of 2019.
The UK sandwich sector, the main outlet for small-sized coldwater Pandalus borealis shrimp, is recovering after the lockdown. The sector had suffered from the closing of
offices, as employees are the main customers for shrimp sandwiches. Prices of coldwater shrimp were at their lowest in April and have been recovering since, although
the overall price level is still below that observed in September 2019. Further
improvements are likely towards the end of the year.
Bad weather in Argentina during the
month of August has been impacting
the shrimp fisheries. In addition, there were cases of COVID-19 in
some shrimp vessels, leading to a suspension of production. Strong
demand from Europe and from Japan, combined with the low
domestic production, led to higher prices in Argentina and stable high
prices in Europe.

Raw material prices are going up for Penaeus vannamei in Indonesia, due to strong
demand from the US and the European market and the slowdown in production
activities due to COVID-19 restrictions.
While the market is good for shrimp, crab and lobster sales, which are heavily
dependent on the restaurant sector, have not yet reached pre-COVID-19 levels.
Markets for luxury products like rock lobster from South Africa remain weak, in line with the condition of the US economy. These are products which sell well to white-
tablecloth restaurants, and even in New York, these establishments are only just beginning to open for inside dining, and are operating at only 25 percent capacity. West
Coast rock lobster are usually sold in live form to China, and airfreight is currently
not available, further contributing to
declining prices.
The Canadian PEI summer lobster season
started on 10 August, while the United States of America lobster season also
started recently. Unfortunately, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in
the USA has been suspended, leading to
stronger demand for Canadian MSC-certified lobster. Catches in both areas have been slow over the past few weeks and shore prices are high as processors are ‘fighting’ for
raw material. Inventories are low everywhere and demand is increasing. The present
season looks challenging.
The Nile perch market has been impacted
by a lack of flights from Lake Victoria to the European market. Fewer fillets have been
reaching the market and prices are
increasing.
Pangasius fillets are arriving regularly in
the European market now, after setbacks during the COVID-19 lockdown. Prices are
recovering after the downward trend experienced during the first half of the
year.

The first half of 2020 saw a 52.3 percent decrease in table service restaurant
revenue in France according to Geco Food Service. This has had a huge impact on
festive species such as shellfish and crustaceans.
French bouchot is widely available in
France, as well as imported mussels from Holland, Ireland and Spain, as September
is a good month for many production regions. The new French Bouchot season
for the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Baie Mont St Michel reopened on 21 July.
The PDO refers to guarantees of origin, meat content, traceability and frequent controls.
Oyster producers are hoping for an improvement in sales as the new autumn season starts following a difficult summer tourist season due to pandemic-related travel
restrictions.
Pascal Coquet, head of the scallop committee of the Comité National des Pêches Maritimes et des Elevages Marins (CNPMEM), has warned that the scallop wars could
soon resume if the two sides fail to reach an agreement over access before the start of the new fishing season on 1 October. The disagreements stem from the fact that UK
vessels are allowed to operate in the same fishing areas as the French, but are not subject to the same management restrictions, which include day quotas, gear size, and
no fishing on weekends.
Salmon aquaculture firms have been seeing steep declines in share price after poor financial results in the second quarter as the business impact of the pandemic continues
to be felt across the sector. Producers’ costs are rising due to a combination of factors
and lower prices means margins are being squeezed. Sea lice pressure is contributing to higher fish health costs at farms while a weak krone translates into more expensive
prices for feed, which is typically traded in US dollars. At the same time, operating and logistical costs are being pushed up by the various restrictions associated with the
COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, air freight, the primary means of supplying fresh salmon to a number of key markets, has become substantially more expensive.
Meanwhile, prices for Norwegian fresh whole farmed Atlantics are languishing at levels well below historical highs, with the NASDAQ salmon index approximately stable at
NOK 45.45 per kg as of week 36. This is 1.5 percent increase compared with 4 weeks

ago and a 36 percent decline compared with 12 weeks prior. Lower prices have dragged
down Norwegian export revenues, with the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) reporting a year-on-year decline of 13 percent in August, equating to NOK 5.3 billion exported
in the month. Volume was down by 7 percent, to 95 100 tonnes. Sales to Asian markets, particularly China, remain subdued due to logistical and market challenges, and
European producers are instead looking to the EU as core markets such as France launch price-based campaigns to boost retail demand. The price situation in the UK is
similar to that in Norway, with September export prices for Scottish fresh whole farmed
Atlantics (3 – 6 kg) averaging GBP 4.30 per kg, approximately on a par with September 2019.
Analysts expect farmed Atlantic prices to
bottom out over the third quarter, with Fish Pool forward prices stable at NOK 45.35
and NOK 48 per kg for September and October respectively. Although the current
environment is a challenging one, there is still a reasonable amount of optimism
amongst industry observers that the market will adapt, demand will recover, and
prices will stabilize within a relatively short timeframe. Fish Pool forward prices for
December have risen to NOK 59.10 per kg,
reflecting the anticipated boost from seasonal demand, while the current expectation for Q1 2021 is NOK 64.80 per kg.
As of week 35, export prices for fresh whole farmed Norwegian trout were some 18 percent below the same week last year, at NOK 40.78 per kg. High supply volumes
and weak markets are driving the price decline. According to the NSC, Norwegian
exports of trout increased 22 percent in volume terms in August, to 6 900 tonnes, while value increased by only 2 percent to NOK 326 million.

Lower supply volumes of farmed bass and bream on European markets are propping up prices in a weak market environment. Food service demand in the large
Mediterranean markets of Italy, France and Spain, accounting for a
large proportion of sales, has recovered somewhat but remains
subdued following a poor tourist season. At Spanish wholesale
markets, bream prices have dropped back from their early year peak, to
EUR 4.35 per kg for < 600 g fish as of
week 37. However, bass prices continue to achieve impressive heights
on the back of tighter supply, with the same source quoting week 37 prices of EUR 4.90 per kg for the same size.
