The National Field Hockey Coach-es Association (NFHCA) is a non-profit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organiza-tion is to stimulate the professional

development of coaching leadership within the sport of field hockey. The NFHCA strives to cultivate and recognize the professional contributions of its membership and to foster and promote the growth of the sport. The NFHCA is responsible for providing a recognizable presence and voice in regard to legislation affecting the sport as well as interscholastic and intercollegiate programs. Since the re-birth of the Adelphi Women’s Field Hockey program in 2008, the Panthers have had numerous athletes honored by the NFHCA for their dedica-tion on and off the field.

The Panthers made their first trip to the NCAA’s in 1981 under the direc-tion of Head Coach Ginny Kelly. Adelphi Field Hockey held a Division II ranking of second at one point during the season, but two loses to

C.W. Post dropped them to third.

Due to the shift in ranks, the Brown and Gold was forced to travel to Waltham, Massachusetts to play Bentley College in the semi

finals. The Falcons came out on top 2-1.

Field hockey returns to Adelphi for the 2008 season, however, this isn’t the first time women calling themselves Panthers have picked up hockey sticks. As early as 1912, when Adelphi was still located in Brooklyn, New York, women were playing the game during phys ed and competing against each other in interclass matches.

According to Adelphi’s Fortnightly, during the 1927-28 school year, a group of women under the direction of Thelma Van Narden, orga-nized, joined the New York Field Hockey Association and competed in a varsity schedule against surrounding schools like Manhattanville College and New York University. From that point on, field hockey remained a staple in the Adelphi physical education department.

Beginning in the early 1930’s, results from Adelphi hockey matches can be regularly found in the New York Times and in campus pub-lications. In the early days of playing at Adelphi, women’s athletics

were loosely governed, so the players and coaches played a huge role in organizing the matches, purchasing the uni-forms and equipment, and traveling to the games. The Fort-nightly in 1933 makes mention to Adelphi graduating two players to the American Reserve team and National Touring team marking what could be the first Panthers to turn pro-fessional in athletics.

In 1934, Adelphi College hosted the Northeast Region Tournament, where professional hockey teams from all over

the New England/Mid-Atlantic came and played. Adelphi hosted this tournament through out the 40’s. Two years later in 1936, Adelphi College brought in the South African National team for a match and tour around New York City.

Throughout the 40’s and the 50’s the team remained very active playing schools from Con-necticut, New Jersey and all through New York. By this point, women’s athletics was more organized, and the Panthers were contending for conference titles and competing in tour-naments on a regular basis.

The 1960’s saw a large increase in popularity for the sport at Adelphi, and turn tryouts were advertised in the Delphian.

The 1975 season marked an important spot in hockey history at Adelphi as it was the first year that scholarships were given. That same season Adelphi captured the Metropolitan Crown and six years later, the Brown and Gold made its first appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Adelphi’s stickwomen walked off Stiles field for what seemed to be the last time in 1983 due-to a growing shift in interest towards soc-cer, which became a varsity sport at Adelphi in

1982. However, 25 years later, hockey is back at Adelphi and Head Coach Gloria O’Connor wasted no time as she got her young squad ready for their 2008,10-game schedule

The first win came against Drew University on September 20, 2008 in Madison, New Jersey as the Panthers fought their way to a 2-1 win. The next day they followed up with another victory, recording their first home triumph in an exciting 3-2 overtime victory against Ra-mapo. The squad capped off the inaugural season in fashion as they closed out the season in front of the home crowd with a 5-2 victory over Seton Hill.

Despite Field Hockey being a sport offered at Adelphi University for nearly 100 years, accurate statistics and booking keeping throughout the sport’s history is hard to come by. Because of this, the Office of Media Relations has chosen to only display current statistical information. However, if enough data can be collected in the future, historical statistical facts and figures will be added. With any assistance in this process, please email Adam at [email protected].
