Glorifying God by … Reaching, Building, Serving May 2017 From Randy... Our Father who art in heaven…on Wednesday nights we have begun looking at this Model Prayer also known as The Lord’s Prayer. Come learn with us more about The Lord’s Prayer and how it can be applied in public and private prayers. If you have the time, see you on Wednesdays at 6:15 pm. Our Memorial Day Service will be held on Sunday, May 28. “Thank You” in advance to Cindy and Luke Miller for their hard work in the preparation they do each year for this service. It is a service of inspiration and dedication as we recognize those from Shiloh who have served our country. The conclusion of the service takes place in our cemetery with the reading of names of deceased veterans. Summer is approaching and with it comes Vacation Bible School. Our VBS is scheduled for June 19-23. If you wish to volunteer your time and talents, contact our Children’s Minister, Rebecca Goff, to offer your abilities. My apologies…there was confusion as to whether Sunday School classes would be held on Easter Sunday morning. In the listing of Easter Sunday activities, Sunday School was inadvertently omitted from the list. Please accept my apology for any confusion that this created for individuals and classes. Communication is a key in a church our size. My role as Pastor is to make sure all information that goes out is communicated effec- tively. Again, my apology. Got summer plans?...The King George Summer Lunch Bunch is looking for volunteers to deliver lunches to school-age children on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 1 through August 3. Deliveries are made between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. I’m thinking about volunteering…want to ride shotgun with me? Call the office and speak to Sherri if you would like more info or would like to volunteer. Several churches in King George will be participating. The conference will focus on “getting over our fears, failures and flaws to live bold and free.” The cost of the conference is only $10.00. From Randy... Our Father who art in heaven…on Wednesday nights we have begun looking at this Model Prayer also

known as The Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer we pray in church and it is also a model that Jesus taught to give us an understanding as to the purpose and content of our prayers.

April showers bring May flowers – well, how about a cup of soup, too? The Women of Shiloh will meet on Saturday, May 13 at 9:30 am in the Family Life Center for their regular bi-monthly meeting. We will be

stirring together a big pot of chicken noodle soup for folks to take to the homebound. We will need ingredient donations on that day so we can stir it all together & make it tasty! “Like we ain't scared and our boots ain't muddy” by Cindy Miller

B utch Maples sang those “Letters from Home” lyrics during past

Memorial Day services at Shiloh. The song portrays a soldier’s life on duty overseas. Letters from home are cherished not only by those in com-bat receiving them but also by future children and grandchildren as treas-ured keepsakes.

The letters my parents wrote to each other during World War II were snuffed out by a house fire when I was a toddler. That’s why I was blown away in March of this year when I received an email from my cousin in Baltimore, saying she had some letters my father, James T. King, wrote to her mom, his sister, during World War II. I never knew such letters existed.

I received the three letters on March 17. One letter stood out be-cause it answered some questions about his service, but the tone wasn’t that of the tough old Marine who raised me. It was from a frightened, uncertain young man about to be shipped overseas. At the top of the letter, dated December 28, 1944, at 5 p.m. on United States Marine Corps Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, sta-tionery, he accounted for his sloppy penmanship: “I was nervous when I wrote this; I can’t read it myself.” Half way down the page, he wrote: “I think this will be the last letter from me for a long time because we think we are leaving here tonight for the South Pacific or some place…I never ate any chow tonight because I wanted to write to you and Ollie (my mother). I might not have had a chance later tonight.”

Three days earlier, James had written a letter on Christmas Day. He said “This was the worst Christmas I have ever spent in my life outside of 1938 (when his mother died). He also stated “I am looking for another one along about August.” Another one meant me. My mother had moved to Parris Island to be with him when he was sta-tioned there. An even earlier letter dated November 30, 1944, showed a Parris Island address. In that letter, he talked about seeing Joe Billingsley, another King George boy, “most any time down there.” Joe had joined the Ma-rine Corps in the latter part of the war after having served with the Foreign Service and having been a prisoner of war. Both of them survived World War II, but many were killed. At our Memorial Day service at Shiloh, May 28, we will honor those who gave all.

Attention, active duty and former military personnel. The deadline for submitting your service photo for inclusion in our Memorial DVD is May 14. Please send to [email protected] or bring it by the church office.

Children’s Ministry By Rebecca Goff

Spring has sprung! I am thankful for the extra sunshine! Wednesday night children’s activities will end on May 17. Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked with our children this year. Vacation Bible School is just around the corner so mark your calendars for June 19-23! Classes will be available for all ages. VBS does not happen without volun-teers. Please consider where you may be able to vol-unteer during this busy time. Another event our chil-dren look forward to every year is music camp! This year it will be July 10-15.

Music News By Barbara Perry

What a beautiful April and Easter we shared here at Shiloh. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our Easter services and our musical, The Choice. From the choir, to the sets, props, cos-tumes, sound, lights, refreshments, actors, instru-mentalists and audience, it was the perfect message. It was a blessing, and so wonderful to see and expe-rience the Easter Season in this way. May promises to be just as beautiful as we continue with our chil-dren's choirs on Wednesdays, prepare for our annual Memorial Day Service and look ahead to our sum-mer activities. Please consider joining us on Wednesday nights!

Awana News By Lynn Pardee

Thank you, Shiloh Baptist Church members, for supporting the Awana program this year. Our young Bible scholars have worked very hard to memorize God’s word this Awana season. We have close to two dozen children who join us Sunday afternoons to learn about God and build relationships within the Church.

A special thanks to Jim Jensen, and all the faithful volunteers who allow our Awana club to be so suc-cessful. We will resume meeting next September. We look forward to all our clubbers returning, and ask our church members one more favor this year-- bring new children to us on Sunday evenings, so we may further share God’s word with our young people.

Youth Group

By Cathy Lyon & Stephen Hagewood

April was a great month for the Area 51 youth! We went to the Rock & Worship Roadshow and saw some amazing bands! Our Creative Minis-tries Teams were hard at work performing at our Easter Eggstravaganza and Mars Hill.

Our High School youth are getting ready for the Impact VA Summer Mission Trip. During April and May, they are completing a Bible study to prepare themselves to better address people in need with the love of Christ, as well as to partner with others in Christ. A local mission project is also planned for June 3 in preparation for Impact Va.

The Youth Boys will be camping at West-moreland State Park May 12-13. The Youth Girls will have a Journaling Day on Saturday, May 13, 1:00 pm. Please signup at the youth bulletin board by May 7, for both events.

Sunday, April 30, is our last Sunday night youth group meeting until September. Upcoming events and reminders:

Sunday School By Gail Davis

The dramatic musical was about choosing Jesus. But did you know that even before you chose His Son, God chose you?

“But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvellous grace.” (Galatation 1:15)

By grace He calls us chosen (1 Peter 2:9). He calls us loved (Ephesians 1:4). He calls us delight (Isaiah 62:4). The apple of His eye (Psalm 17:8). He loves us so He carved our names on the palm of His hand (Isaiah 49:16).

You are His chosen love, his chosen delight, the apple of His eye. Discover how many other ways you are blessed by your Father's love. Come study with us on Sunday mornings. Come discover true love at Shiloh. Classes begin every Sunday morning at 9:45 am.
