Welcome from the Principal

Everyone is very excited that the

building work for the new school is

well under way and when you view

the building from around the area you

get a real sense of the shape the

school will take. Derbyshire County

Council’s £23million investment in the local community,

agreeing to build a brand new school fit for the 21st cen-

tury, will enable us to achieve the vision of having “an

outstanding learning centre at the heart of the commu-

nity.” The governors have taken the decision, following

consultation, to retain the name of Glossopdale and to

call the school “Glossopdale School”. This symbolises

the local area as well as our primary function of being a

school. The change of name will take place from Sep-

tember 2017. The school logo will stay the same, as will

the school uniform. There will, however, be a new

school badge, for which we will allow a phasing-in peri-

od over the next year.

The Best by All, for All

Glossopdale Community College Year 11 Leavers Prom 2017

The Carnegie Medal 2017 We have been reading like mad because we had a short list of 7 books to read by a certain deadline. Some of our Year 8 students have been ‘shadowing’ the official judges who will decide which of the books wins the Carnegie Medal 2017. There was a wide range of books to read, from a funny book about an Alien to a poetic book about two unlikely friends to an exciting book about survival in World War Two, plus four more. You can read all our book reviews here: http://carnegiegreenaway.org.uk/grouphomepages/index.php?GroupID=2836 The Year 8s really enjoyed the challenge and when the deadline grew close they had their own chance to vote for their favourite. We celebrated our winner with a lovely treat of fruit, drinks and biscuits and there was a lot of discus-sion about the different books we read. Here they all are, show-

ing off the winning book

on the front row – they voted

for ‘Salt to the Sea’ by Ruta

Sepetys.

On Monday 19th June, the real judges of the Carne-

gie Medal 2017 also chose “Salt to the Sea”!

Other Reading News from Glossopdale Using the scheme called Accelerated Reader to do

online quizzes about their reading books, our Year

7s (there are around 200 of them) have read and

quizzed a phenomenal 3998 books at our last count,

which means they have read 110,063,874 words al-

together since September. Great Reading! On aver-

age, they borrow about 34 books each from the

Learning Resource Centre in a year. A great effort

by all.

Glossopdale Community Col-lege turned up the glamour as students from Year 11 celebrat-ed at Prom 2017. Everyone was dressed to impress and arrived in style at the event, which was held at the Palace Hotel in Bux-ton. Year 11 students have worked hard during their exam period and Prom 2017 was a well deserved celebration of their efforts this year. We wish them the very best of luck and look forward to seeing them on results day!

Year 10 Learn Traditional Skills Local company Jack Badger joined us at Glos-sopdale to run a term long project with a group of Year 10 students. The group were tasked with designing and creating a traditional oak stool using carpentry techniques which are slowly being lost. Jack Badger provided us with the timber kits and some of the tools needed for the project. The team were impressed by our student’s creative flair, initiative and effort during the project. The sessions have been a great success and the students have produced some beautiful work.

Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh Award

Congratulations to the Year 10 Bronze DofE students who successfully completed their Practise Expedition at the beginning of July. They are now ready to complete the qualifying expedition which takes place before the end of term. The expedition is a 2 day, 1 night trip that they have to plan and prepare for. All of the students have developed skills in navigation, teamwork, communication and even cooking. Well done to you all.

Sixth Form Students get to Work

All our Year 12 cohort successfully completed their work placement week, accessing a variety of voca-tions. Students worked alongside a range of profes-sionals including; Tameside Radio, The University of Manchester, Kenworthy Chambers and FIG Cre-ative. The feedback the Sixth Form received was exceptional, highlighting the hard work and dedica-tion our students have to their personal develop-ment. Thank you to all the employers who supported our students with this event!

Glossop Music Festival

On Wednesday 21st June and Thursday 22nd June 19 Year 7 and 8 students, who play orchestral instruments were involved with a project with the Glossop Music Fes-tival. On the first day the students took part in a work-shop with four professional

musicians from the Northern Chamber Orchestra. They created a piece of original music based on American com-poser Aaron Copland’s piece ‘Appalachian Spring’. The following day, the students performed their work at a con-cert at St. Luke’s Church, alongside musicians from the Northern Chamber Orchestra and local primary schools.

Music For Youth Following the College Wind Band’s perfor-mance at the Music for Youth Regional Festival at Sheffield University at the beginning of March, the group was, once again, invited to perform at the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham. This is an excellent achievement by the students in the band, espe-cially when you consider that this is the fourth time out of the last five years that they’ve quali-fied for this event, the most prestigious youth music festival of its kind in Eu-rope. On Thurs-day July 6

th, the

band gave its Na-tional Festival performance in the spectacular acoustic and surroundings of the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. This year, for the first time, the band’s programme consisted entirely of music composed by current Glossopdale stu-dents; Rory Craig’s ‘Arabian Desert’ and Sam Baxter’s ‘A Derbyshire Folk Suite’. Both Rory and Sam are in Year 12. Both the band and the compositions were highly praised by the pro-fessional music mentors during the feedback session at the end of the school wind band cat-egory. Year 13 student, Seb Brass, was on stage to collect the band’s certificate. Before the band’s performance in Symphony Hall, members enjoyed a thrilling workshop on the concourse with the Royal Marines band.

A Summer of Music Saturday 1st July - Big Band: Glossop Carnival, Manor Park The Big Band gave its annual performance at this highly popular event. The band’s music, featuring vocalists Ja-mie Rowbotham and Lucy Moore, both in Year 12, was enjoyed by a large crowd, basking in a glorious sunny day. Saturday 1st July – Wind Band: joint concert with the Pen-nine Singers, Glossop Parish Church. On the same day, the college wind band performed in a joint evening concert with local choir, the Pennine Sing-ers. The band gave two solo spots, containing music from their current repertoire, and also performed a joint item, ‘The Saints Medley’, with the choir. Wednesday 5th July – Music Department Summer Con-cert, Hall 1, Glossop Site, 7pm The annual summer concert was given in a front of a packed Hall 1 and contained performances from the Wind Band, Big Band, Brass Band, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Flutz, ‘Mini Flutz’, Samba Band and Dark Peak Sinfonia. This was a great evening and also saw presentations made to group members who are leaving GCC at the end of the term. The leavers this year are: Year 11: Angus Savage, Luca Turner, Isobel Townend. Year 13: Fiona Tainsh, Seb Brass, Nicole Hal-ton, Jamie Rowbotham, Lucy Moore, Louis Barnes and Joe Binns. The students were thanked for their outstanding contribution to music at Glossopdale and were wished all the best for the future

We are incredibly proud of year 8 Glossopdale stu-dent, Olivia Moore. Olivia stunned the judges at the 2017 Dance World Cup in Germany bringing home five Golds, two Silvers and one Bronze medal. Olivia’s fantastic tally has helped England secure the World Cup for the 4th year.
