We appreciate their diligence and rejoice with them in reaching this milestone. Congratulations to Lianna Callens, Anna Clayton, Jay Emerson, Taylor McDonald, and Allison Wiginton. You can read about each of them on the insert in this week’s bulletin. We also congratulate those who have recently graduated from college. When things get back to normal, we plan to honor our high school graduates in a more visible way. Well done!

A PSALM ABOUT RELIANCE

by Chad Ramsey

Psalm 123 emphasizes the concept of reliance. Although the passage is only four short verses in length, it adequately identifies the One upon whom we are to rely—God, it illustrates the magnitude of our reliance, and it explains why we should seek to rely upon God. Let’s notice how the psalmist develops these thoughts.

The psalm begins: “Unto You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens” (Psalm 123:1). With these words, the psalmist asserts God is the one upon whom he relies. Rather than relying upon his own intellect or ability, he recognized the God who created the world holds the future in His hand. Like the psalmist, we would do well to look to God for the help we need (see also Psalm 121:1-2).

The psalm continues: “Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, until He has mercy on us” (Psalm 123:2). The reliance of the psalmist upon God is beautifully illustrated. As the servant relied upon his master for sustenance, so the psalmist relied completely upon God. Like him, our reliance upon God must not be partial; it must be total.

The psalm concludes: “Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorn of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud” (Psalm 123:3-4). The psalmist relied upon God because he recognized his need for mercy. Those around him were not providing this need. God, however, can!

JUSTFORFUN

Ecclesiastes is a discussion of Solomon trying to find meaning as he looks back at his life. However, he is trying to find meaning with earthly or worldly wisdom. He looks only at what is seen under the sun (on this earth). He doesn’t take into account what God has told man (spiritual wisdom). As a result, each thing he looks at ends up being vanity – empty. Below are listed some of the topics from Chapters 1-3. Read and see what Solomon concludes from worldly wisdom. Then list what spiritual wisdom would say.

1. The cycles of nature (Ecclesiastes 1:4-8). a. What does worldly wisdom conclude from this? b. What would spiritual wisdom conclude from these cycles?

2. No remembrance of former generations (when we die, we are dead and forgotten) 1:11 a. What does worldly wisdom make of death? b. What does spiritual wisdom make of death?

3. Great works made with our hands (2:4-11). a. What does worldly wisdom make of the works of our hands? b. How does spiritual wisdom deal with this?

4. Wisdom (2:12-26) a. What does worldly wisdom conclude about wisdom? b. What does spiritual wisdom say about wisdom?

5. There is a time (season) for everything (Ecclesiastes 3) a. What does worldly wisdom conclude about this? b. What does spiritual wisdom conclude?
