PRINCIPAL’S REPORTThe school uniform is expected to be worn by our students. The uniform is endorsed by the P&C who are representatives of our families and community members. Our school canteen conveniently sells fleecy winter school jackets. With the onset of the cooler weather it is a timely reminder for parents to ensure their children are in the correct school jacket.

Many thanks to our Agriculture students for their exemplary behaviour at Wingham Beef Week and congratulations for the many awards received by individual students and the Gloucester High Agriculture Team. I would also like to thank the Ag. Sub Committee, the parents who supported the team (transporting cattle, feed, supervision and encouragement) and our staff (casual and permanent – a true team effort) who made it happen.

Parents of Year 7 and 9 students would be aware of the NAPLAN testing we completed last week. Results will be available from mid August.

Current Year 10 parents, please take note of the flyer in this newsletter outlining online testing for students in Year 10 this year who did not meet NAPLAN band 8 results in reading, writing and numeracy last year. To support these students, we are enrolling them in this term’s online tests DURING WEEK 8 to allow them to demonstrate they can meet the minimum HSC standard which will be required to receive the HSC from 2020. Students will have 2 opportunities each year to meet the minimum standard in each of these areas from Year 10. For further information visit: https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard

Please note that letters went home with the current Year 9 and 10 students this week in regard to HSC Minimum Standard On-line Testing.

Year 11 students will be receiving their half yearly reports toward the end of next week. Under the new changes to the Stage 6 curriculum, Year 11 students will only sit one formal school examination which will be conducted towards the end of Term 3 2018.

WINGHAM BEEF WEEK SUCCESSOn Monday afternoon (14 May), 23 students from Years 10 to 12 packed their swags and trailer loads of gear and headed to Wingham for the annual Wingham Beef Week. This year saw a record 410 students attending from 28 schools.

Tuesday morning the students attended talks by AusMeat, University of New England, MLA and our local District Vet from LLS.

Tuesday afternoon was the Junior Judging Competition. The students themselves had to judge a range of heifers and steers on desirable carcass and breeding traits and answer a series of questions. Wednesday was a very early start as seven animals had to be washed and prepared for the parading competition. Late morning, the students then had their chance to show their cattle parading skills. Despite the tough competition, two of our students made it to the finals of their age group, Keiran Schnieder and Jordyn Snape. Jordyn went on to come second in her age group, leading a steer she had prepared.

Thursday, students were busy preparing the steers for showing later in the morning while Year 12 were shown through Wingham Abattoirs. Year 12 thoroughly enjoyed this tour. One of the four steers, Ned, the Red Angus was placed sixth in his class which was a great achievement.

Thursday afternoon students went across to the abattoirs to take part in the Meat Judging competition. The students were split up and joined students from other schools, judged carcasses, identified and judged primal cuts and retail cuts.

Friday saw another early start -pack up and off to the Wingham Abattoirs to view the carcasses of our steers. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and rated it high on their “best experience” for the week.

It was time to attend the presentation before heading back to school. Gloucester students, parents and teachers were very proud of the students’ achievements over the week. Prizes received at the presentation were:

Aust. Intercollegiate Meat Judging Ass awardsBeef Judging (Carcasses and rumps)Intermediate Winner - Bella ErasmusSenior Winner - Kieran SchneiderOverall - Winner Kieran Schneider and Runner-up Bella ErasmusTeam Awards - Retail Cuts and Wholesale Primal IdentificationRunner-up - GHS Miranda Riley, Kieran Schneider, Maddy Bignell and Cameron DunlopTeam Awards - Beef JudgingWinner - GHS Miranda Riley, Kieran Schneider, Maddy Bignell and Cameron Dunlop

Overall, it was a fantastic learning experience for the students, not only in regard to the beef industry operations, but how to organise yourself, be on time, work as a team, look out for the wellbeing of others, socialise with others outside of their school and to be responsible.

A huge thank you to Mr Seale and Miss Sneddon who took on the task of main supervisors and to Mr Herps and Mr Wisely who also assisted. Thank you to the parents who helped out in so many ways, and a special thank you to Julian Schneider who supervised and assisted the students with the cattle handling and David Bignell with trucking of cattle and assistance where needed.

The students are now keen to start on their next steer preparation for Scone in October.

Congratulations to the Committee of Wingham Beef Week for staging such an amazing event and to Wingham Beef Exports for allowing us to experience the processing of beef. Thanks also to the many sponsors of the event.

MAD NIGHT ROCKS GHSThe first Music and Drama Night of 2018 took place in the school hall from 7pm on Thursday 24 May. The evening was compered by a stoic but under the weather Liam Chester and the always reliable Sophie Middlebrook, who sort of entertained the audience with her hilariously bad ‘dad’ jokes.

There were singing performances by HSC music students and experienced campaigners Brighid Nolan and Liam Chester. They were joined by Year 11 students Lilly Tiedeman, who opened proceedings, and Ayrleah Tull, who had a busy night singing, performing in a play and tripping up stairs. Zeke Llewellyn wowed the audience with his exceptional violin work while Ethan Bird tinkled the ivories, Sapphira Snow strummed the bass and Will Bowden grew his fan base with a stirring tribute to good ole Aussie Crawl. A pleasant evening on the ears to be sure, to be sure. There wasn’t a lot of noise in the Year 10 Drama performances as they presented their non-verbal mask productions. The audience was taken on a life journey by one group while the other two explored shenanigans in the classroom and the date from hell. Year 9 Drama went all slapstick with some bumbling policemen trying to solve a crime and Year 11 Drama presented a disturbing yet amusing story of neighbourly dysfunction.

Well done to all involved. Special thanks to the SRC and our techies – Stephen Hester, James Latimore, Jarrod Crook, Will Germon and backstage man Dwayne Cole. It was a great night!

Mr Scott Davis, Drama Teacher

U/15 BOYS SOCCER - Bill Turner Cup - Match report: Round 1 and Round 2With the long hot summer behind and the cold weather just around the corner, the football season is in full swung. Gloucester High has once again entered in the Bill Turner Cup; the BTC a knockout competition for football (soccer) in NSW schools. Around 800 school teams from NSW, QLD, ACT and Victoria participate each year, with all players 15 years and under. Bill Turner valued fitness, fun and fairplay and the competition pays tribute to these values. The Bill Turner Cup is in its 40th year.

Round 1.In the last week of Term 1 GHS travelled to play Taree at Taree’s Omaru Park. The match was a free flowing event with Gloucester dominating in the first half thanks to goals from Aiden Hawkins and Kayden Schumann. Aiden’s was a great individual effort and left the keeper stranded on his line. Kayden’s goal was on his second attempt after he had missed a sitter early in the match. Half time saw Gloucester ahead by 2 goals to nil. Taree regrouped and were a different team in the second half playing a much more patient game and drawing level at 2:2 early in the second half. The game then settled into a great match as each team had its chances but could not convert once in front of goal. Taree finally scored to make it 3:2 as the match entered its final quarter. Gloucester fought hard and a break by our captain Owen Tomlinson ended with an attempted shot from within the box. Here Owen was knocked off the ball by a Taree defender and a penalty was awarded. From the direct penalty shot Owen put the ball in the back of the net and it was 3:3 with 10 minutes to go. The Gloucester girls, having just played their Bill Turner Trophy match were in full support and voiced their excitement as the game went to the final minutes. In the final minutes, man of the match, Kayden Schumann found a way through the defence following smart passing from Owen and his centre half partner Aiden Hawkins and had the Taree keeper beaten diving to his right. Gloucester now lead 4:3. Taree tried hard in the final minutes but Gloucester held on to record a great win from a high quality match. Well done Gloucester and well done Taree on a great match.

Round 2Gloucester was again the away team and travelled to Laurieton Oval on Tuesday 22 April. This match was highly anticipated as Camden Haven was a bit of an unknown to the Gloucester team. The match was a low scoring game with the half time score being nil all after an average game from both teams. I would have given the Camden Haven keeper the player of the half as he kept his team in the match with 2 great saves. Gloucester High did not have their kicking boots on and relied on a good defensive effort to earn the nil all half time score. A pep talk at half time by the coach and support crew had the boys refocused for the 2nd half and this had immediate effect as Gloucester dominated possession and field position for the best part of the second half. As a form turn around this was impressive, however, the goals still did not come. Finally, the score went to 1 nil, Gloucester’s way with just 5 minutes left to play after some good work up the right wing which was followed by a good cross to the goal square. Execution of the final strike was not pretty as both defence and attacking players missed the ball allowing it to sit nicely for Owen, on the back post, to slot home the only goal of the match. Gloucester 1, Camden Haven nil. Camden Haven also played a better game in the second half, however our defensive effort on their danger men kept them from scoring.

This win now has Gloucester High School into Round 3. This will be a home game at the Gloucester Sports Centre on Wednesday 6 June with kick off at 11:30.

Cheers for now. Coach Herps

YEAR 11 JINDABYNE EXCURSIONA reminder to parents that the final payment for this excursion is due. Please contact the school if you wish to discuss.

YEAR 10 - POLICE TALKOn Thursday 24 May, Year 10 participated in Police Talks as part of the Wellbeing Program at Gloucester High.

Topics discussed included laws for children below the age of 18, Domestic Violence and Road Safety.

Students listened attentively and asked some valid questions in relation to the topics which were being presented.

It is valuable for students to gain an understanding of the legal implications involved in many activities they will undertake. This is also an opportunity for students to understand what risk taking behaviour is and to identify ways to ensure their safety.

In the space of just five days 32 young musicians including myself, created 24 minutes of music that reminded the listeners of Prokofiev’s ballet music, evoked the themes of the Romeo and Juliet story and astounded the audience with its intensity, colour and inspiration.

14 Dancers from schools as far as Glenn Innes and Cowra responded to the music we created collaboratively choreographing an interpretation of the music.

This was an amazing opportunity for me as I learnt new skills in composing music, developed my violin playing and received feedback from professional musicians.

RYDA Sessions

In small groups, students take part in six interactive workshops.

• Speed & Stopping On a closed section of roadway, students experience the relationship between speed and stopping distance through practical observation. Students also learn about the importance of car safety features and maintenance.

• HazardS & Distractions An interactive session where students form strategies to manage distractions and improve their hazard perception skills.

• The ‘I’ in Drive A reflective session designed to show students how their personality is an important aspect of the total road safety equation. Students self-assess against five personality areas and use this tool to analyse risky situations in cars.

• Road choices A discussion, routinely led by a Police Officer on key risk areas for young drivers and passengers. Features hard-hitting videos on decision-making and choices.

• Crash Investigators A unique opportunity for students to speak to a crash survivor about the event that changed their life. Forming an interview panel, students investigate crash factors, comparing them against the Safe System approach.

• Genevieve’s story A true story about a young driver and passenger involved in a road crash. Drawing on the story, students analyse factors including mood, impulse and planning and develop strategies for decision making in risky situations.

Road Safety Education Limited is the leading provider of road safety education for youth in Australia. The flagship RYDA Program is delivered each year to over 50,000 senior high school students from more than650 participating schools.

At RYDA, students attend six interactive sessions at a dedicated venue over the course of a school day. In small peer groups, they are challenged to change the way they think about road safety; participating in a stopping distance demonstration, devising personalised strategies, gaining an understanding of their individual risk profile, leading an investigation into a real life crash and getting tips from road safety experts on how to protect themselves, their friends and family.

RYDA gives students critical information and strategies that do not come from driving lessons, books or the school classroom.

By participating in RYDA, schools further their commitment to educating the ‘whole student’, providing a unique opportunity to learn essential life skills as they face the challenges of driving solo or as an influential passenger of a novice driver.

Now is the time to equip young people with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe on the road.
