An Education Taking Shape

The SHAPE of the future for yourchild’s education:

What we want for each and everyone of our children:

To be SafeTo be HealthyTo AchieveTo make a Positive contribution To Enjoy their learning

“Do you know a school that makes you long for childhood?” J. Bronowski

Generations of children have left Glynne Primary with a love of learning and are well prepared for secondary school. Both academic and personal success is valued. The pupils are taught by a talented staff who are caring and friendly and who have high expectations of children and themselves.

We provide a creative and engaging curriculum with a breadth of opportunities. Art, music and PE are given high priority alongside academic skills to ensure development of the whole child.

In order to develop the whole child we have adopted a ‘Rights Respecting School’ ethos. We teach the children about the UN Convention of Children’s Rights and we encourage them to think about the responsibilities they have in order to ensure everyone has access to their rights.

We hope that this brochure will give you a flavourof the rich and varied experience your child could enjoy at Glynne Primary, but the best way to see our school in action is to come and visit.

“This school is a great schooland every child is special.”Child

“The curriculum is a strengthof the school.”HMI

The art work, environmental area, gardens, tyre park and play areas on our grounds are a delight and our children are encouraged to use them. Access to the school for disabled visitors and pupils ensures the environment is welcoming and safe for everyone.

Visitors are encouraged. Actors, poets, theatre groups, scientists and other experts are invited to broaden and enhance the children’s learning. Our visitors are always police checked.

Local walks and visits to places of interest further afield are regular features of our curriculum. Detailed risk assessments are carried out on all visits.

“Young children have a curiosity about the world. All too often this curiosity is not sanctioned in schools and children’s attention is directed instead to barren collections of information which give no hint of the excitement of discovery. Small wonder then if their language becomes barren too.”C.H.Rosen

It is vital that every child enjoys school and feels a sense of belonging in a safe environment. The school grounds are fenced and houses surround the school. We are proud of our inclusive ethos, on which all contributions to the school community are valued.

E-safety and anti-bullying strategies ensure that children feel safe and know how to keep themselves safe both in the real world and in the virtual world.

Our school plays an active part in shaping attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Through Personal, Social and Health Education we teach our children about all aspects of health and personal well-being. We encourage our children to understand the impact of particular behaviours and to take responsibility for the choices they make.

PE, sport and extra curricular activities lay the foundation for an active lifestyle and teach children the fundamental importance of exercise as a key determinant of longer term health and weight control. Mentoring, peer support and other support structures promote positive health; including mental health. Opportunities are given for children’s views to be heard and acted upon to promote pupil’s well being.

As children learn in different ways, a range of teaching strategies are used to allow pupils to experience realpleasurewhenanewskillisacquiredorafreshconcept grasped. Pupils are taught as individuals, in small groups and in classes.

Our curriculum motivates, inspires and excites children, parents and staff. It is rich and vibrant with a strong focus on core skills in reading, writing and maths.

Through careful monitoring and assessment for learning, individuals are given extra support when necessary and a higher level of challenge where appropriate. Children are encouraged to constantly assess their own performance and set targets for improvement.

Parents are regularly informed of progressthroughout the year by parents’ consultationevenings, reports and informal meetings.

“The most important thing is that we no longer think of children as objects into which you push something called knowledge, and, if it won’t go in you give it a knock. Rather should we think of children as individuals growing and learning, with learning as part of their growing. As we think of them differently, so they will come to act differently.” C. Schiller

“One might as well talk about the wetness of water, for surely as water is nothing if not wet, then education is nothing if not creative.”R. Tanner

Children are offered a wide range of opportunities both within the timetable and as extra curricular activities. A diverse calendar of events takes place throughout the year and parents are kept fully informed through the school’s newsletter.

Children enjoy residential activities as partof the curriculum.

The year book written by our leavers showsthe wonderful times they have enjoyedat Glynne Primary.

“Perhaps the most important single cause of a person’s success or failure educationally, has to do with the question of what he believes about himself.” C. Schiller

We aim to educate the whole child, reinforcing good spiritual, moral, social and cultural values, enabling every child to have a positive attitude about themselves. Pupils can contribute through the School Council and regular class circle time. Children celebrate their success at achievers and good work assemblies.

By providing a broad curriculum, we are able to develop each child’s interests and horizons, and recognise individual talents. Children can further their interests at a variety of after school and lunchtime clubs and many take advantage of peripatetic music lessons offered each week.

We have a strong commitment to develop links between home and school. Views are sought from parentquestionnairesandcontributionsmadebyparents, pupils, members of the local community and outside agencies. Parents are very active in supporting fund raising and organising school events which benefit the school and the local community.
