LetterWelcome to the first GMA Honors celebration!

Tonight it is our privilege to pay tribute to those who are proven trailblazers and creative innovators.

It is with great pride that we are inducting well-deserving comrades into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Adding their names to the esteemed roll of Hall of Famers the GMA Foundation has acknowledged over the past 37 years, this tradition is preserved in order to remember our history and value our community.

For the first time, we have chosen to expand the induction platform to include five special honorees - those who are putting hands and feet to God-given vision in order to better serve others and make a difference for Christ.

Both our inductees and honorees have proven that nothing is impossible with God when we make our gifts, talents and heart available to Him. I hope we will all be inspired, not only by the lives that we lift up tonight on the stage, but also by the camaraderie of our extraordinary Christian/Gospel music community seated all around us. Let’s enjoy each other, knowing that we are all parts of a unique family that may look and sound different, but we share the same calling. Some of us are behind the scenes facilitating those who are creating and traveling - but together, we are a light in the darkness on a special mission.

Grace and Peace,

Jackie Patillo President, GMA Foundation; Executive Director, Gospel Music Association

Dear Friend,

We have all been impacted by the power of music. Many of us have seen hope restored and strength revived because of the power of the Gospel. We have personally benefited from the encouragement the songs of truth have brought to our lives over the years.

It’s from this place of respect and hope for the future that GMA Honors was born. This brand new event has been developed to celebrate those that are making a difference in our culture for Christ through music globally both past and present. Thank you for joining us for this celebration of our community and legacy. With your continued support we can fulfill the mission of the GMA Foundation to foster an appreciation for the historical development of gospel music and its impact on our culture.

Many Thanks,

John HuieCo-Chair, GMA Honors

BROWN BANNISTER Brown Bannister had not dreamed of a career in the music business but had a passion to share the Gospel. Bannister came to Nashville and happened in to a career with pop artist B.J. Thomas. Finding himself at the engineers table, his career path took shape as he connected and built relationships with Christian artists and their shared message. Bannister is best known for his work in the audio engineering, recording and production industry but he is also a noted songwriter and Christian music leader. Bannister has won 15 Grammy Awards, over 20 Dove

Awards and has been named “Producer of the Year” five times by the Gospel Music Association. For 30 years, Bannister has produced award-winning albums for some of the industry’s top Christian artists, including Amy Grant, Michael W. GAITHER VOCAL BAND The Gaither Vocal Band got its start in the early 1980s with four guys singing around a piano backstage before a Bill Gaither Trio concert. Gary McSpadden, Steve Green, Lee Young and Bill Gaither were just having fun, harmonizing on “Your First Day in Heaven” when Bill decided they should try out their new sound on a live audience that very night. The audience went wild… and that impromptu performance marked the beginning of an era.

Now, for more than a quarter century, the Gaither Vocal Band has created a legacy of award-winning excellence

that has forever raised the bar for male harmony. The list of men who have comprised the Gaither Vo-cal Band over the years reads like a “Who’s Who” among the gospel music industry’s best-loved voices. And, always at the helm, has been Bill Gaither, who has led the group out of his personal passion for great harmony and his genuine desire to bring meaningful music to a hurting world. The Dove award winning and Grammy-winning, chart-busting success of the Gaither Vocal Band has far exceeded his wildest expectations. Today, the Gaither Vocal Band roster is comprised of Bill Gaither, Wes Hampton, David Phelps, Adam Crabb and Todd Suttles. Individually, these men are gifted artists and men of authentic faith. Together, they are the incomparable Gaither Vocal Band, known around the world for their powerhouse vocals, innovative harmonies and life-altering message… a message of grace, hope and redemption.

RICH MULLINS Singer and songwriter Richard Wayne “Rich” Mullins was best known for his worship song “Awesome God” which has been embraced as modern classics by many Christians. His musical career formally began with Zion Ministries in the late 1970s, where he wrote music and performed with a band called Zion. Mullins first solo hit, “Awesome God,” appeared on his third album and brought his music to a wider audience. In the early 1990s, Mullins released a pair of albums that featured more of a stripped-back, acoustic feel than his earlier work, with nods to Irish music. “Step By Step”, a song written by

good friend Beaker and included on volume one, was an instant hit and, like “Awesome God”, became a popular praise chorus. In 1993, Mullins assembled a group of Nashville musicians to record A Liturgy, A Legacy, & A Ragamuffin Band, which was later named the No. 3 best Christian album of all time by CCM Magazine. Mullins final release was entitled Jesus Record, which Mullins began recording in 1997 but passed away before its completion. The album was completed as a tribute to Mullins by top Christian artists. Mullins was posthumously awarded Dove Awards for Song of the Year and Songwriter of the Year in 1999.

Rich Mullins passed away on September 19, 1997, at the age of 41, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

TAKE 6 Take 6 is the most awarded vocal group in history with 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, a Soul Train Award, and more. Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley are the six virtuosic voices that unite to create the group’s crystal clear harmonies.

Formed at Oakwood University in Huntsville Alabama, the group’s unique sound caught the ear of Warner Bros executive, Jim Ed Norman from a cassette demo passed along to him. Jim Ed knew he had to have this group on the Warner roster and signed them immediately.

It wasn’t long before the world, too, would take notice of this fresh, new vocal blend in both the Jazz and Gospel arenas. From their inaugural release, Take 6 has gone on to record more than a dozen albums and have received numerous awards and honors. Heralded as “The Baddest Vocal Cats on the Planet”, from super producer and music legend Quincy Jones, Take 6 has collaborated with some of music’s finest and iconic artists including: Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Al jarreau, Brian McKnight to name just a few.

Planted solid in their 7th Day Adventist faith, current members Claude, Mark, Alvin, David, Joey, and Khristian and former members Cedric and Mervyn continue to perform on main stages around the globe while staying true to their gospel music roots and heritage.

2014 HonoreesDR. BOBBY JONES For over three decades, Dr. Bobby Jones (aka “Mr. Gospel”) has helped to revolutionize gospel music. Born of humble beginnings in Henry County, TN, Jones always dreamed of a career in music. He excelled academically, graduating from TSU and earning a doctorate from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Jones started in television at WSM-TV in Nashville in 1976. He soon became credited with taking gospel music to the mainstream airwaves. Best known as host and executive producer of BET’s longest running show, Bobby Jones Gospel, for over 35 years, Jones’ stage has showcased the best of the

best in Gospel and helped to launch many careers. His generosity and love for higher learning caused him to donate a tape library worth over one million dollars to his alma-mater, TSU. When not writing, producing and hosting television shows Jones can be heard on the Bobby Jones Gospel Radio Show and the Bobby JonesGospel Countdown. He and his choirs have recorded over 15 albums over the years and have been nominated and received many awards including Grammy, Stellar, Dove and Soul Train nominations and wins. Other notable achievements include: The Gabriel Award winner, GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee, a Music City Walk of Fame star and his title as Dominica’s Ambassador at Large. Dr. Jones has worked relentlessly to bring his love for Gospel music to the world. He has invested his life in spotlighting others with no sign of slowing down.

DON MOEN Born in a small town near Duluth, Minnesota, Don Moen grew up with music as a part of his life, singing in choirs, studying piano, violin and trombone. After receiving a music scholarship at Southern Mississippi University, Don headed south and eventually transferred to Oral Roberts University. It was at Oral Roberts University, where he met Terry Law. From 1971 to 1983, Don Moen joined evangelist Terry Law and Living Sound as they used music to evangelize in the most difficult areas of the world: The Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, South Africa and Rhodesia.

An encounter with Mike Coleman and Ed Lindquist, who had just started a new label named Hosanna Music, which would later become Integrity Music, was another turning point in Don’s life. Doors opened for him to record his first album entitled Give Thanks, for Integrity Music, which sold over 1 million units. He has since recorded over 25 albums with total sales in excess of 5 million. For over 20 years, Don Moen would work at Integrity Music, and eventually lead the music label as president, signing artists and songwriters such as Hillsong, Israel Houghton, Paul Baloche, Ron Kenoly, Darlene Zschech and Lenny LeBlanc.

After leaving Integrity Music in 2007, Don Moen has returned to his first calling, leading worship and training worship leaders all over the world. Traveling over 200,000 miles a year to over a million people a year, leaving a legacy of worship across denominations, cultures, and ages.

SHOW HOPE Show Hope™ is a movement to care for orphans, restoring the hope of a family to orphans in distress around the world.

Founded by Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth, this nonprofit organization is helping to make a difference for the millions of orphans and waiting children around the world. Primarily they do this through Adoption Aid financial grants that help give orphans families and Special Care Centers in China that help orphans with special needs. Through programs like their Advocates, Student Initiatives, and Sponsorship, they are truly mobilizing a movement of individuals and communities who show hope to children in need. When the Chapman’s adopted their daughter Shaohannah Hope in 2000 from China, they desperately wanted to do something about the millions of waiting children who still needed loving families. In February 2003, they started the organization Shaohannah’s Hope, now called Show Hope, as an official 501c3. In 2013, Show Hope celebrated ten years of service! Since its inception, Show Hope has helped provide forever homes through Adoption Aid grants for more than 4,000 orphans from 50+ countries, including the U.S. In addition, more than 1,000 orphans with special needs have received critically needed medical care through Show Hope’s Special Care Centers.

MICHAEL GUIDO On January 16, 1983, in Los Angeles, through the ministry of Calvary Chapel, West Covina, a young man named Michael Guido came to Christ. His life would be radically changed as well as the lives of those God put in his path. Guido’s passion for Christ and love for music would take him to secular and Christian concerts where he would seek to minister for Christ. He realized then the impact that the music industry had on the youth today. He saw that the platform given to these artists was the megaphone into the

lives of kids. He also realized the great responsibility that artists faced in being in the industry and in the spotlight. His greatest desire was to see artists and their families, particularly those who shared a positive message of Christ, be encouraged and strengthened in their ministry. Various groups would ask him to tour with them and challenge them to grow in their walks with Christ. As time passed, the pressures of business and the call of God to minister became equally demanding. “It was the summer of 1989,” Michael explains. “God was showing me, ‘I will not give anything to God that doesn’t cost me something’ (2 Samuel 24) After much prayer & fasting, I came to the place where I said, ‘Okay God, I will go. Christ must be my only provision.’ It was then that Celeste and I felt the call of God to go full time into the ministry.” So they closed down their family tile business and packed up their then 2 young boys & left for Franklin, TN where they felt they would best be able to minister to artists and their families. And that is just what they have done for the past 16 years through the service of PR Ministries.

The Gospel Music Association (GMA) was founded in 1964 by leading southern gospel music industry executives for the purpose of promoting, encouraging, supporting and developing gospel, religious, and sacred music.

The group of four men and one woman who formed the GMA in 1964 did so out of a concern for a fragmented industry badly in need of cohesion. James Blackwood, J.D. Sumner, Cecil Blackwood, Dorothy Pate, and Donald W. Butler, Sr. intended the GMA to be a centralized resource center where those interested in the gospel music industry could obtain information about, among other things, artists, record companies and publishers.

According to the official Charter of Incorporation, this group of southern gospel music industry executives formed the organization “For the purpose of the promotion of music generally, and the promoting, encouraging, supporting, developing, and dissemination of gospel, religious, spiritual and sacred music, and to approve, encourage, and endorse gospel music, conventions, concerts, programs, recordings, sheet music, hymnals, orchestration, arrangements, television and radio shows and productions, and other means of bringing gospel music before the public.”

Originally established as a 501c(3) “public benefit” organization, over the years the GMA began to operate more like a “mutual benefit” trade organization. In 2003, the GMA Board of Directors decided to separate the “public benefit” activities from the “mutual benefit” activities by forming a new organization. The result is that the GMA Trade Organization and the GMA Foundation have differing missions and each is governed by its own Board of Directors, although operated by the same staff.
