AGENDA
My “nano” academic background: what did I like?
Why carrying out international research experiences matter
What do you do for a living with a strong “nano” background?
Physics is not all in life: transition into business is easy
Innovation is at the heart of value creation for corporates: no
doubt you will use your “nano” studies in your everyday work
Conclusion

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES MATTER
Benefits of studying and doing research in another university:
• Experience a different methodology
• Have access to a broader set of experimental facilities
• Publish papers with an international team
• Increase the opportunities to do research after graduation
• Contribute to create networks between PoliTo and foreign universities
• Boost your team-working attitude and reduce cultural barriers
• Dress up your CV for future interviews
• Improve your English
• Taste how “working abroad” could be

AND AFTER? WHAT TO DO FOR A LIVING?
Deepen your expertise in physics/electronics/nanotech with:
• PhD – plenty of interesting choices in Nanotechnology!
• Technical role in a high-tech Company – doable in Italy too!
Breath your knowledge if you want a transition into business roles:
• Management consulting – great learning experience
• Investment banking – the best brands for your CV
• Corporate Graduate Program – a decision for the long-term
• MBA – learning in a different way, complementing your personality

ME
ME
MY TAKEHOME FROM MBA
• Accounting/Corporate Finance is not boring at all
• Famous entrepreneurs and managers agree in saying that
working in a industry that you deeply like (based on
technologies that you understand) is key to achieve success
• Professional growth is easier in a growing market/industry
• Take risks when you are young
• Networking is helpful in every type of job

MY CAREER CHOICE: (SOLAR) ENERGY
• Solar PV Energy has a high technological content and a good learning
curve, similar to microelectronics
• Renewable energy market is growing worldwide, with and without public
subsidies
• Energy is a business under transition because the traditional business
model is facing existential threats called distributed generation and
energy efficiency
• In 2010 I joined a Turin-based young Company focused on solar energy
and energy efficiency, called Solesa. I managed the Italian market from
2011 to 2013 as CEO, then I became a shareholder and I am now in
charge of managing the international expansion of the Group

Alba, Italy, 4.6 MW
Energy savings of 350k€ per year
Coimbatore, India, 100kWp
Diesel Savings of 40 liters per day
WAS ALL THIS PHYSICS USEFUL?
• Potential Induced Degradation is a physical
phenomenon that causes low performances in c-Si
PV modules
• A good solid state physics and applied material
background is needed in order to tackle this problem
when it appears in large PV plants
• Solesa’s design team is composed of electrical
engineers so this competence was covered by me
thanks to my academic background
• In March 2014 I was invited to give a speech in
Beijing, telling about a success story that Solesa
built in Poirino (TO) where the techno/commercial
solution of a PID case, led economical gains of more
than € 1m
