The well-known red logo of the GMH Group today represents 45 medium-sized companies worldwide. They are located in Germany, Austria,Belgium, Brazil, Australia and in the uSA. Their specialist knowledge, their innovative power and proximity to the customer make them reliable partners for projects in the market sectors of mobility, energy and mechanical engineering.

The GMH Group is organised in 11 different business units which makes it possible for the companies to operate jointly on the market and react quickly as well as flexibly in response to customers’ wishes.

MobilityWhether in automobile, railway construction or shipbuilding: steel and components from

our group of companies are used precisely in those areas where the strain is greatest, where

performance is produced or transferred and where safety plays a particularly important role –

for example in the power train of road vehicles, in large engines for shipbuilding or wheel sets

for rolling stock.

EnErgyour companies supply essential components for the construction of turbines and generators

used in the classical generation of electricity. in the area of alternative electricity generation,

they are involved in the planning and construction of steel constructions for offshore wind

parks. Furthermore, they produce light alloyed and high alloyed steel casts for fittings and

pumps for the oil industry. their innovative potential is evident in all areas, most particularly

in the development and optimisation of suitable materials.

MEchanical EnginEEringour companies supply steel materials and ready-to-install components to this very large and

varied market. We also produce crane systems. complex transport and materials handling sys-

tems (for example bridge and gantry cranes) are an important feature in our product portfolio.

raW MatErialS rEcycling buSinESS unitIn addition to raw iron, scrap is the second basic material for steel production. In some cases it is the sole material used. The manufacturing cycle of all metal products starts and terminates in the companies of the raw materials recycling business unit. All steelworks and foundries belonging to the GMH Group are supplied with scrap of different varieties and quality grades from this source. Furthermore, third industrial businesses also number amongst our customers in this sector. A fundamental rule applies here: not all scrap is the same – and it is certainly not to be treated as rubbish. The collecting, sorting and processing of different kinds of materials require a high level of technical know-how and sure instinct on the part of our employees.

In order to transport several thousand tons of steel scrap on a daily basis, and to supply customers punctually at realistic market prices, an optimum infrastructure is essential. This is why the Group’s scrap-recycling locations can all be reached by road, rail as well as by waterway. Naturally the core competences of the raw materials recycling business division also includes disposing of scrap which accumulates in crafts trade enterprises, with private persons, as well as in the metal-processing industry.

railWay SyStEMS buSinESS unitIt is hard to imagine any other area where adherence to highest quality criteria to ensure reliability as well as durability of the products is as import- ant as in the area of passenger and goods transport on the railway network. The awareness of this fact in combination with consistent striving for tech- nical progress gives our companies in this business unit a leading edge in the development, calculation, construction and production of rolling stock. In the production workshops of this business unit wheel set shafts as hollow and full shafts as well as innovative monobloc wheels are produced according to customer specification for rolling stock used in passenger as well as goods traffic – even in modern high-speed trains. Numerous city trains and trams are also fitted with our rubber-spring wheel systems, thus assuring comfort-able and low-noise travel. Single-piece forged axle designs, moreover, enable easy access without steps.

The fact that we use wear-resistant materials naturally provides a guarantee for the long service life of our products. our range of services also includes the servicing of components and refurbishment of wheel sets.

caStingS MEchanical EnginEEring buSinESS unitThe castings mechanical engineering business unit manufactures products from iron as well as steel materials for a wide variety of applications in mechanical engineering.

In the steel castings area, depending on the customer’s requirement, it is pos- sible to make unalloyed, light and high alloyed parts as well as nickel base alloys, as hand mould castings and also mechanical mould castings. The piece weights range between a few kilograms and 50 tons. The product range extends from thin walled, weldable and high-strength construction parts to expendable parts such as shredder hammers and grinding balls. In the areas of civil and underground engineering as well as bridge-building, steel casting parts from these companies are used as crotches, cable heads or cast-steel nodes, which are also used for foundation structures for wind turbines. Scoops or diffusers measuring four to six metres in diameter can be supplied for turbine construction. A further core activity in the steel castings area is the manufacture and processing of castings for fittings and pumps as well as for rolling stock construction and mining. Also in the area of construction weldings it is possible to supply solutions which are tailor-made to suit individual customer requirements.

Complicated and core-intensive iron casting parts weighing up to 160 tons can also be produced by the companies belonging to the castings mechanical engin- eering business unit. Hand-formed large-scale casting parts include, for example, cylinder blocks, housings for gas and steam turbines, rotor hubs and panels for wind farms. parts are produced for areas such as energy technology, the steel industry as well as mechanical, compressor and plant engineering. Naturally we are also in a position to produce small and medium series either as semi-finished or finished castings. They are used in railway drive systems, in the food industry as well as in the construction of packaging machines. Depending on the field of application, iron castings with spheroidal or flake graphite are used. The manu-facturing range extends from one-off product to the standard model. Intensive consultancy concerning construction and materials as well as optimisation of the components also constitute an important part of the service provided by our companies.

aluMiniuM caStingS buSinESS unitAs a light metal, aluminium is always used where a reduction in weight has a positive effect on the functionalism of the final product. This is particularly the case in the automobile industry. The businesses of the aluminium casting unit produce suction pipes, gear boxes, chassis parts as well as a variety of water supply and airflow elements for highly reputable automobile manu- facturing companies. A special area is also the production of heat exchangers which are the most important components of water-heating systems in many domestic homes where they play a significant role in ensuring pleasant tem-peratures.

From the development stage to the completion of prototypes and series of a variety of different sizes, our aluminium experts impress with their extensive know-how. The requirements which are subsequently imposed on our products decide which of the three special process technology methods is applied: pressure casting, die casting or sand casting. In this context the weights of the precision parts extend from 0.1 to 600 kilograms. In accordance with customer requirements, the service at the locations of the GMH Group additionally includes CNC finish, so-called ultrasound washing, leak testing as well as final assembly work.

The companies belonging to this unit are involved in the development and manufacturing of complex transport and goods handling systems in all imaginable designs and sizes including the necessary drive and control engineering. The state-of-the-art gantry and bridge crane systems – equipped with grippers and claws or magnets – are required in the assembly or handling of products of every imaginable kind. Some of them can be used in automatic mode as process cranes. It goes without saying that our crane systems experts also carry out conversions, repairs and other service work at our own locations as well as on the premises of extraneous companies.

A further special area of this unit is the development and realisation of fully automatic multi-storey car park systems. Here sophisticated technology replaces the time-consuming and bothersome business of trying to find a parking place and means considerably less space is required than is the case in a conventional car park.

For many years now the high-performance range of products and services, which complies with the strictest of quality and safety standards, has been convincing customers of the crane systems unit all over the world.

Within this unit great importance is attached to the future-orientated offshore energy generation market. In addition to wind measuring masts, the range also includes foundation structures. These consist of complex constructions which attach the wind parks firmly to the seabed at a depth of 20 to 50 metres where they need to withstand the effects of the wind, waves and salt water for many years to come.

Furthermore the companies of the GMH Group which are specialised in plant engineering also offer complete solutions to a wide range of logistics prob-lems: multi-purpose vehicles can function as rail vehicles for the construction and maintenance of conductor rails and trackage as well as rescue trains in the occurrence of a catastrophe and shunting vehicles. on request, our com-panies can even supply complete workshop equipment for rail depots.

And the offer extends even further to cover a variety of other areas. From complex, thick-walled welded constructions for the chemicals, steel and primary industry to high-precision mechanical processing of large-scale components with a weight of up to 300 tons for mechanical engineering, naval and energy sectors.
