ActiveSync in GMS

Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync for GMS is licensed separately from other core components. This permits flexible deployment options to cater for user populations where demand varies. For example: A 100 user population may have 50% of users requiring over-the-air (OTA) synchronisation of PIM data. This model allows for more economical deployment of key functionality for more advanced/remote/mobile users.

In addition to OTA synchronisation of personal calendar and contact data - GMS solutions offer comprehensive mobile accessibility options, including native support for email for almost any mobile device.

Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync for GMS is supported by close integration into the core groupware (collaboration) tools. GMS uses a custom MAPI client to connect to Outlook and enable the comprehensive sharing capabilities for both the GMS webmail and Outlook clients (the data view is identical from each client and changes will ripple automatically). OTA capability deployment for personal and calendar synchronisation requires a complementary usage of the collaboration features. Typically a collaboration license matching the number of users that require this OTA functionality is installed.

Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync

Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync is an XML-based protocol that communicates over HTTP (or HTTPS). It is used to synchronise email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes between a messaging server and a mobile device without the need to install a client application on the mobile device. The protocol also provides mobile device management and policy controls.

Initially a client will use the Autodiscover command to get a user’s account configuration. The client can then view and modify server data related to that account, this data can include email messages and attachments, folders, contacts, and calendar requests. The client then uses the Provision command to send device information to the server and to get and subsequently acknowledge security policy settings from the server. Next, the client uses the FolderSync command to retrieve the folder hierarchy of the user.

• This initial implementation of Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync for GMS supports:

• Autodiscover - The Autodiscover command facilitates the discovery of core account configuration information by using the user’s Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address as the primary input.

• FolderSync - The FolderSync command synchronises the collection hierarchy but does not synchronise the items in the collections themselves.

• Sync - The Sync command synchronizes changes in a collection between the client and the server.

GMS & Sharing

Inclusion of Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync for GMS is a natural extension of the comprehensive groupware and sharing capability of the solutions. GMS is groupware optimised for Outlook - powerful collaboration capabilities mean that work groups can easily and quickly share and modify content. Integrated with the GMS webmail client, the core groupware facilities are extended to both Outlook and the native webmail client.

Interoperability and integration is key to the GMS design philosophy; the groupware experience (enabled with the collaboration feature) is enhanced with key capabilities:

• Contact Sharing & Management

• Calendar Sharing & Management

• Task Sharing & Management

• Interoperable between webmail and static clients

• Custom Outlook MAPI connector

• Support for Outlook 2007/2010/2013

• Free/busy support
