Marcus Smith, Principal Karen Wiesner, Assistant Principal GMS eNews Updates GMS FNO – Friday Night Out – Sept. 28! FNO is this Friday night, Sept. 28th from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. These events are a fun way for our GMS students to spend an evening with their friends in a safe environment. Our FNO's require a parent pick up (students will not be able to walk home after these events). When you arrive to pick up your child, you can pick up your child in one of two ways. First, you can park your car and walk up to find your child as he/she exits the building. OR, you can stay in your car and pull into the "pick up" line en route to the front of the building. If you have questions about the event, please contact Cassidy Harrison at [email protected] We are also looking for parents to help chaperone our dance this week. If you can help out, please arrive at 6:30 with your ID. We will scan your ID, give you a visitor's sticker and give you a job for the evening. What a great way to spend a Friday night. We hope you can come and join us. If interested in helping out, please contact Mrs. Harrison at [email protected] . 8th Grade Parents On our website, you will find separate letters from both Grayslake Central and North about the upcoming "Explore Test" that will be facilitated on October 27th. More information will come from your child's high school soon. If you have further questions about the test, please contact your child's high school. September 28, 2012 The GMS Science Olympiad team will be starting soon, with our first practices beginning the week of November 12 th . More information will come home at the beginning of November. If you are interested in being an event coach or you have any questions, please contact [email protected] . We hope to see a great number of GMS students out for a great season! Science Olympiad

Thank you from the GMS PTO! Thank  you  to  all  who  came  out  for  an  evening  without  dishes  for  our  Dog  'n  Suds  Night.    Our  PTO  members  continue  to  work  incredibly  hard  to  earn  funds  for  our  students.    The  next  opportunity  to  stop  by  and  support  our  PTO  and  GMS  students  will  take  place  during  our  book  fair  during  conference  week.    What  a  great  combination...  raising  money  for  our  PTO  while  putting  a  great  book  into  your  child's  hands.    It  doesn't  get  too  much  better  than  that.    We'll  see  you  there

This  fall  we've  begun  to  reflect  upon  and  update  our  building  crisis  procedures.    As  we  continue  to  work  with  our  community  resources  new  ideas  have  been  discussed  about  needed  changes  to  our  plan.    As  you  understand,  in  a  crisis  situation,  our  students  and  staff  could  be  locked  down  in  our  classrooms  for  a  long  period  of  time,  possibly  hours.    With  this  information,  our  students  and  staff  could  be  in  need  of  some  basic  materials  to  keep  them  comfortable  and  safe  during  a  possible  long  evacuation  procedure.    This  fall  we  will  be  putting  together  "classroom  comfort  boxes"  for  every  classroom  in  our  building  to  ensure  that  those  basic  needs  will  be  managed  well.  If  interested  in  helping,  we  are  in  need  of  donations  of  water, snacks  (no  peanut  products  please  -‐  such  as  goldfish,  crackers,  cheez-‐its,  fruit  snacks,  etc),  thin  blankets,  toilet  paper,  and  colored  shower  curtains  (the  last  two  for  the  possibility  that  students  and  staff  could  be  locked  down  into  a  classroom  for  a  number  of  hours  with  out  bathroom  facilities  -‐  private  bathroom  facilities  would  have  to  be  constructed  within  the  classroom).  Another  donation  opportunity  would  be  small  plastic  storage  totes  to  protect  these  materials  in  the  classroom  environment.  If  interested  in  donating,  please  drop  off  your  donations  in  the  GMS  front  office.    Thank  you  for  considering  our  need.

GMS VIP (Very Inspiring Panther) Please  help  us  recognize  those  Grayslake  Middle  School  students  and  staff  members  who  consistently  go  above  and  beyond  expectations  in  exemplifying  our  school’s  Mission  and  Philosophy.  Nominate  an  Administrator,  Teacher,  Staff  Member,  or  Student  whose  daily  actions  reflect,  in  an  exemplary  way,  the  values  described  on  the  back  of  the  form.    Those  nominated  will  be  celebrated  during  our  quarterly  assemblies  that  take  place  at  GMS.    Please  print  out  the  attached  document  and  bring  to  the  office  so  we  can  celebrate  our  wonderful  GMS  students  and  staff  members.    Goal Setting Conferences  Our  GMS  Student  Goal  Setting  Conferences  will  be  held  October  3  &  4.  If  you  are  in  need  of  scheduling  a  conference  with  your  child’s  homeroom  teacher,  please  contact  him/her  next  week  to  schedule  a  time.  During  conferences,  MAP  and  ISAT  data  points  will  lead  to  setting  focused  academic  goals.  The  collaboration  between  parents  and  teachers  will  direct  your  child  to  a  successful  school  year!  If  you  have  not  returned  your  P.I.E.  (Parent  Information  Exchange)  form,  please  do  so  asap.  This  will  help  us  develop  appropriate  and  achievable  goals.    At  conferences,  you  will  be  handed  two  packets,  one  will  contain  information  about  home  support  with  activities  and  ideas  for  the  family  and  the  other  will  include  GMS  activities.  Please  take  time  to  read  through  both  packets!

Dog ‘n Suds’ Restaurant Night was held on September 19th – Thank you to

those who participated!!

Would you like to be a Chair for SCRIPPS? We are actively seeking a Chair Person for the Scripps fundraising program. Scripps is a program by which parents send in money for gift cards to stores they normally frequent (or would give as gifts at holiday/birthday times), and GMS PTO is given a percentage of the amount of each gift card purchased (the percentage varies by vendor). This is a great opportunity for a working Mom or Dad who wants to be involved, but doesn’t have time during the day or weekends, as it is something you can do almost entirely from home. If you are interested in Chairing this program, please send us an email at [email protected].

School’s large gymnasium.  The GMS 5th Annual Craft Show will include raffle items, a bake sale, and

over 75 crafters and vendors.

General Guidelines:

All spaces are 10’ x 8’ and will be provided with 2 chairs.  **NOTE: TABLES ARE NOT

PROVIDED.**   Crafters must provide their own tables/displays.  All displays must be kept within

the 10’ x 8’ space.  All crafters must remain set up until the craft show ends at 4:00pm.

Entry fees are non‐refundable, unless Craft Show organizers cancel the show.

Set up will be from 7:30am – 10:00am.

Some electrical spaces may require an extension cord.  Be prepared and bring your own please!

Electrical spaces are limited and reserved very quickly.  Note: For those using electrical outlets,

you will be sharing a circuit with other crafters.  Please be courteous and limit your amperage

requirements so that you do not cause power disruption to your neighboring booths.

Volunteers will be available to assist with unloading and unloading at the front entrance.  We

ask that crafters move their vehicles to the parking lot as soon as their vehicle is unloaded.

Consider your fellow crafter waiting to unload.  Park your vehicle towards the side lot or back

part of the parking lot, allowing attendees to park close.

All items you are selling must have been listed on your application form or you will be asked to

remove them.  We will try to eliminate multiples crafters/vendors.  There may be other vendors

selling like items, but we will try to keep this to a bare minimum.

Each crafter is required to donate a $10 raffle item that will be given away as part of the raffles

going on throughout the day.

Vendors must be cleaned up by 5:30pm.

By law, Grayslake Middle School, both inside and out the building, is a SMOKE FREE environment.

Grayslake Middle School is not responsible for any losses or damage to crafters’ property or

personal injury to persons attending the craft show.

Confirmation letters with space assignments will be mailed after October 15, 2012.

Thank you for making our 2012 craft show a success!  We would love to welcome you back next year.

Applications and letters will be mailed to current crafters/vendors prior to the public “Request for

Vendors” for upcoming events.  Remaining spaces will be assigned on a “first‐come, first served” basis.
