TherewascouncilmeetingonDecember1,2010attendedbyTerryWalkus,VictorWalkus,CrystalWalkus,EddieCharlie,ErnieHendersonandRobertWalkus.AbsentwerePaddyWalkus(awayformeetingsinVancouver)andGaryWalkus(working).PresentationsweregivenbyRickCoonandJohnHenderson.Therewasalsoapresenta-tiongivenbySandraCharlieandRavenaCoonregardingtheannualdisbursementsforthisfiscalyear.Detailstofollow.ABandCouncilResolutionwaspassedtorequestpatienttraveldollarsforouroffreservepeople.Thisshouldassistgreatlyinservicingouroffre-servepeople.Ifapproved,ourPatientTravelDepartmentwillbeabletoprocesstravelforindividualslivingoffreserve.The office will be shut down from December 17, 2010 to January 4 for Christmas Holidays.Ourschoolprincipalresignedsowewillbepostingforanewprincipaltofinishouttheschoolyear.WintercleanupisbeingtargetedforJanuary10,2011.Hopefullythewholecommunitycangetinvolvedandcontributetothecleanup.Binswillbeordered.Pleasegetinvolvedandhelpthecommunitywiththisevent.I’mexcitedtohaveourwebsiteupandrunningwithinaweek.Checkitoutandgiveussomefeedbackastothecontentandwhetherornotit’seasytofindyourwayaround.WehadaworkshoplastFridaytotryanddevelopastrategywiththeprovincialandfeder-algovernmentsandtheFederalFirstNationsOrganizationsforrenovationsandtrainingforyoungadultsforourcommunity.Thiswillbeacomprehensiveplanwithrealtargeted

ELDERS’ UPDATE
Toourfellowcommunitymembers:
Asyouallknow,therewasanElders’MeetingheldThursday,Dec.2,2010.OneofthemainissuesdiscussedwasthetheuseandmisuseoftheElders’Centre.TheEldersfeelverystronglythatSilenaneedstocontinueenforcingthepolicythatwehavecomeupwith.TherearemanyreasonswhytheElderscameupwiththispolicy,andthebuildingisverywellmaintained.
SilenaistheONLYONEauthorizedtounlockthebuildingforanyoneusingit.SheMUSTbepaidtheclean-upfeeforeveryuse.TheElderswillNOTtolerateanyonewillingtobreakourrulesforourbuilding.Ithasbeenmadeclearthatifthiseverhappensagain,thosepeople’snameswillbemadepublicandtheywillfaceapenalty.
WeEldershaveworkedveryhardforourbuildingandareveryproudofhavingaplacetocallTHEELDERS’CENTRE.Itiskeptcleanandpre-sentable.WeadviseyoualltounderstandtheElders’BuildingPolicyandhaverespectfortheElders’wishes.ItisonlySilena’sjobtoenforcethem.Wewouldnotbeabletoreplacethebuildingifitwasdamaged.

ELDERS’ CENTRERENTAL & CATERING POLICY
This policy has been passed through at an Elders’ meeting and was agreed upon in a vote in June of 2010.
PleasebookthebuildingduringofficehourswithSilenaGeorge,Elders’Coordinator.Officehoursare8:00amto4:00pm(withalunchbreakfrom12:00pmto1:00pm).Thephonenum-beris(250)949-7406.
Paymentmustbepaidinfullup-frontaswellastheclean-upfee,otherwisethebuildingwillnotbeopenedforyourfunction.Therewillbeaclean-upfeeaddedtoallrentalsasourElderscleantheirbuildingthemselves,astheychoosetodosothemselves.
ThisbuildingisfortheElderstotakeprideinwhattheyhavefortheirmeetingsandwhatnot.SopleasetreatthisbuildingwiththeutmostrespectasyouwouldanElders’house.

TREATY UPDATE: A LOOK AT OUR PAST
Thiswellknownphotographof thevillageof Ba’asatBlundenHarbourwastakenin1901byCharlesF.Newcombe.
AccordingtoNewcombe’snotes,oneof thefiguresinthephotographrepresents“TukooSchannah”whoisdepictedwithupraisedhandthatprobablyheldacluborhammertoshowhissuperiority.Theotherishisfriend“StlichootSchnochway”whowithraisedfingerispro-claimingthesuperiorstrengthof TukooSchannah.
ThecarvedfiguresontheBoardwalkwerelatersoldtoFrederickLandsbergwhoowneda“CurioShop”inVictoria.In1905Newcombepurchasedtwoof thefiguresfromLandsbergandsentthemtotheFieldMuseumof NaturalHistoryinChicago.

LEGEND OF TUKOO SCHANNAH AND STLICHOOT SCHNOCHWAY
Averylongtimeagotherewasaverystrongman-thestrongestmanthateverexisted,namedTukoo-Schannah.Hecouldpulluptreeswiththeirroots,takeawhalebythetailandripitintwo;hewassuchastrongman.
Hewasalsoaverygreatdiver;hecoulddivefromtheshoreandproceedunderthewaterasfaraseverhewantedtowithoutcomingtothesurface.
AndtherewasanotherverystrongmannamedStlichootSchnochwaywholivedontheothersideof thewater.
AndTukooSchannahdeterminedtotryhisstrengthwithStlichootSchnochway.
Soonedayhegoesdowntothebeachanddivesunderthewater.Hetravelsalonglongwaytillhecomestoalargerockwhichbarshisprogress.Heputouthishandandgaveitapushtogetitoutof theway,buthesplitstherockopenandgetsinsidetherockandtherockclosesonhim.
TherockcontinuesthejourneytilltheycometowhereStlichootSchnochwaylived;andStli-chootSchnochwaywasverygladTukooSchannahhadcome;andTukooSchannahtoldhimhowhehadheardwhatawonderfullystrongmanStlichootSchnochwaywasandthathehadcometotesttheirstrengths.
AndhetoldStlichootSchnochwaytobreakopentherockandliberatehimandStlichootSchnochwaytriedandtriedandtriedbutcouldnot.ThenTukooSchannahspreadhishandsoutgentlyandtherockfallsasunder.
TukooSchannahthentakesStlichootSchnochwaybythehandandforceshimtoliedownproneontheground.
TukooSchannahthentakesaropemadeof theSea-LionandtiesittoalargetreeandtellsStli-chootSchnochwaytopullupthetreeoutof theground,andhepullsandpullsandpullsbutthetreedoesnotmove.ThenTukooSchannahtookthesea-lionropeandwithaneasypulloutcomesthetreebytheroots.
ThenStlichootSchnochwayturnstothepeopleandproclaimsTukooSchannahthestrongestman.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Afterourfirstcommunitymeetingwewereabletohold2othercommunitymeetingsgearedtowardstheyoungermembersofthecommunity.WewereabletositdownwiththeyouthfromtheEkeMe-XiaswellasReedAllen’sandNormanCharlie’sgrade7class.Itwastrulyawonderfulexperiencetolistenandworkwiththesebrightandenergetickidsabouttheirvisionforthefuture!Itissoveryinterestingtoseethesameideasandconcernscomingfromallthreegroups.
IntheNewYearIwanttocometoacoupleofthelocationswheresomeofourpeopleworktotakeanhourofyourtimeandhavethesametypeoftalksthatwehavebeenhavingwiththeyouthandElders.SomelocationsI’mlookingatareHardyBuoysandKeltic.ThereismuchworktobedoneinashortperiodoftimeatthestartoftheNewYear,IamhopingthattheCommunitywillallparticipateinthisveryimportworksothatwehaveatruerepresenta-tionfromallcommunitymembers.
Wewillbelookingatalloftheinformationthatwehavegath-ered,wewilldiscusswhatdirectionthecommunitywantstogoandwewillhavetotalkaboutthelegalpartsofthedirec-tionthatthepeoplewanttogo.ItisanexcitingtimetogetinvolvedwiththeEconomicDevelopmentoftheGwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xwpeople.
