MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.’ Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path.

My best wishes to all.

Dr. A. Sengupta

HISTORICAL ARTICLEWernher Von Braun

When it comes to the field of rocket science and space exploration, the name Wernher von Braun is one of great esteem. It was in the 1930s-1970s when he made significant contributions to rocket science and space exploration and these contributions made him an important man in history. So much was the importance of his contributions that the German scientist is often called as the “Father of Rocket Science.” First, his works were only noted in Germany, but after the World War II, he also began to be a prominent figure in the United States as well. Early Life and Educational Background Wernher von Braun was a part of an aristocratic family. His place of birth Wirsitz, and was the middle child in the brood of three. Magnus Freiherr von Braun, his father, was from an affluent family, and because of this, he and his father both had the title “Freiherr” which is equivalent to being a Baron. Magnus Freiherr von Braun was a conservative civil servant, and he was the Minister of Agriculture in the Federal Cabinet. Emmy von Quistorp, Wernher’s mother, can trace her family’s ancestry back to the medieval European royalties. It was his mother who had started his curiosity for knowing more about outer space. After Wernher von Braun’s Lutheran confirmation, he received a telescope as a gift from his mother and it was then when he began to love astronomy. When his family transferred residence to Berlin, he had caused a great disruption in one of the crowded streets after having attached and set fire to fireworks on his toy wagon. He drew his inspiration from the speed records made by Fritz von

Opel and Max Valier. Apart from his curiosity with fireworks, he was a talented musician who played pieces by masters such as Bach and Beethoven from his memory. He learned how to play both the piano and cello while he was young and though he originally wanted to be a composer, he was destined for greatness in another field. In 1925 he began to attend a boarding school which was in Ettersburg Castle. During the early years, he wasn’t excelling in mathematics or physics but because of Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen or the book called By Rocket into Interplanetary Space which he acquired back then, he honed his skills in mathematics and physics because space travel was something which has always fascinated him. He then joined the “Spaceflight Society” or Verein für Raumschiffahrt when he went attended Technische Hochschule Berlin. There he was able to have a hand in assisting Willy Ley in the tests he was conducting for liquid-fueled rockets. Because of this exposure, he believed that so much more would be needed to make space exploration come true and it prompted him to further his studies by entering Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in 1934 to have his post-graduate courses which earned him a degree in physics. While in the following years his work had been focused on military rockets, his real interest was for space travel. Career His career can be divided into two main timelines; one where he worked for the Nazis, and the other when he was working for the United States. While working for the Nazis, Wernher von Braun became known as the leader of the “rocket team” who had developed the V-2 missile used by the Nazis in the World War II. Scholars still have discussions about his involvement in the manufacturing of these ballistic missiles which were supposedly products of forced labor in the factory known as Mittelwerk. The V-2 first flew in October of 1942. However, in 1945, it became clear to Wernher von Braun how Germany wouldn’t win against the Allied forces and this made him begin his plans for where he

would be after the war. Before the Allies captured their V-2 rocket complex, it was von Braun who had planned his surrender along with 500 rocket scientists he had been working with on the project. He had also surrendered test vehicles as well as plans for other rockets to the Americans. Despite his involvement with the Nazis and the manufacturing of ballistic missiles used in the World War II, Wernher von Braun along with the other rocket specialists he had made to surrender had careers when they worked for the United States. It was in June 1945 when he along with this other specialists was transferred to America, but it was only in October of the same year when they were announced in public. The U.S. Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency had first made sure to bleach their records of involvement with the Nazis before allowing them to work for the United States. He worked in alliance with the United States army for 15 years for the country’s development of ballistic missiles. He was a major part of a military operation which was known as the Project Paperclip, and along with other members of what used to be his “rocket team,” they worked in Fort Bliss, Texas. The rockets they built for the United States army were launched at the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico, and in 1950, this same team of rocket scientists moved somewhere near Alabama to the Redstone Arsenal. Around ten years later, the rocket development team lead by Wernher von Braun was transferred to what was then the just established NASA. There, they had received the mandate to create giant Saturn rockets. He then became the director of the Marshall Space Flight Center of NASA. Other than being the brains behind the development of rockets which had helped the Americans reach the Moon, he was also the leading spokesman of the United States for space exploration matters in the 1950s. Twenty years later, NASA then asked him to transfer to Washington, DC for planning efforts for their agency. He did so, leaving his home which was in Alabama but his time

NEWS UPDATE World Cancer Day-4th February

World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4 to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.

Malaria vaccine target's invasion partner uncovered: (10th February, 2017) A team has discovered how a promising malarial vaccine target -- the protein RH5 -- helps parasites to invade human red blood cells. The study reveals that a previously mysterious protein on the surface of the parasite called P113 provides a molecular bridge between the parasite and a red blood cell. The discovery could be used to make a more effective malaria vaccine.

X-ray to study micronutrients in human minibrains: (10th February, 2017) It is consensus that mothers' diet has critical effects on fetal development, and the absence of nutrients is related to impairments on brain formation. In order to characterize the nutrients during human brain development, Brazilian scientists investigated human minibrains using synchrotron radiation, a sort of X-ray. Results showed that concentration and distribution of chemical elements are related to the stage of development and similar to previous data obtained from postmortem brain samples.

Genetic tool to improve arsenic studies: (10th February, 2017) Arsenic-contaminated drinking water impacts millions of people worldwide. Groundwater contamination is primarily caused by microbes that convert one form of arsenic into another form that can infiltrate groundwater. Researchers have now developed a genetic tool that makes it easier to identify which microbial species have arsenic-converting genes.

Epilepsy drug discovered in fish model shows promise in small pediatric clinical trial: (10th February, 2017) 'Bench-to-bedside' describes research that has progressed from basic science in animal models that has led to therapies used in patients. FDA permits marketing of first newborn screening system for detection of four, rare metabolic

disorders The U.S. Food and Drug Administration permitted marketing of the Seeker System for the screening of four, rare Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs) in newborns. The Seeker system is designed to detect Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I(MPS I), Pompe, Gaucher and Fabry. It is the first newborn screening test permitted to be marketed by the FDA for these disorders. LSDs are a group of rare, inherited metabolic disorders in which enzymes (proteins) that normally eliminate unwanted substances in the body’s cells are not at normal levels or functioning properly. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children, MPS I, Pompe, Gaucher and Fabry occur in approximately 1 in 1,500 to no more than 1 in 185,000 newborns and children, depending on the disorder. If not detected and treated in a timely manner, these disorders may cause organ damage, neurological disability or death. “The Secretary of HHS recently added Pompe and MPS I to the list of routine recommended newborn screening programs and it is

anticipated that additional states will begin requiring use of screening tests to detect these disorders,” said Alberto Gutierrez, Ph.D., director of the Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Accurate screening tests will help with early detection, treatment and control of these rare disorders in newborns, before permanent damage occurs. That’s why availability of LSD screening methods that have been assessed for accuracy and reliability by the FDA are so important.” Several states currently mandate LSD screening in all newborns, including Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. However, until today there were there were no FDA-authorized devices for screening of these disorders. Availability of the Seeker System provides laboratories with a screening tool that has been reviewed by the FDA for clinical and analytical validity. The Seeker System, consisting of the Seeker LSD Reagent Kit- IDUA|GAA|GBA|GLA and Seeker Instrument, works by measuring the activity level of proteins required for healthy lysosomal storage found in dried blood samples collected from the prick of a newborn’s heel 24 to 48 hours after birth. The Seeker Instrument is a device that automates the analysis of dried blood spots. Reduced enzyme activity of proteins associated with any of the four LSDs detected by the kit may indicate presence of a disorder. Results showing reduced enzyme activity must be confirmed using other testing methods, such as biopsies, genetic and other laboratory tests. The FDA reviewed the data for the Seeker System through the de novo premarket review pathway, a regulatory pathway for devices of a new type with low-to-moderate-risk that are not substantially equivalent to an already legally marketed device and for which special controls can be developed, in addition to general controls, to provide a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness of the devices. During this process, the FDA evaluated data from a clinical study of 154,412 newborns in Missouri whose dried blood

samples were tested for protein activity associated with MPS I, Pompe, Gaucher and Fabry. Efficacy was determined because the system was able to accurately identify at least one of each of these four LSDs in 73 of the screened newborns. Risks associated with use of the screening system include false negative findings. As part of this study, the Missouri State Public Health Laboratory conducted active surveillance of four of the state’s metabolic clinical centers for new diagnoses of these disorders. The state laboratory’s surveillance activities extended 15 months following the study’s completion to determine cases of false negatives that had not been identified during the study. No false negative results were identified either through the study or the state’s 15-month surveillance program. The Seeker System was created with funding from the Small Business Innovation Research program in National Institutes of Health’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It is manufactured by Baebies Inc., located in Durham, North Carolina. The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, promotes and protects the public health by, among other things, assuring the safety, effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines and other biological products for human use, and medical devices. The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco products.
