    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

" It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit ." Lauren Dane.

‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit .’ Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank thelast year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academicexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners aresupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learningand instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meetingthe needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order toachieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and lookforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is lookingforward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken inthis direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachersare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and playthe role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positivechallenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holisticneeds of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of theopportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us onthis path.

    My best wishes to all.

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

Gustav KirchoffThere are a lot of great names in the world of science and one of themost notable ones is Gustav Robert Kirchoff. This German physicisthas made massive contributions to the fundamental understanding of

black-body radiation emitted by heated objects, spectroscopy, andelectrical circuits. He also worked with other famous names inscience and came up with other profound breakthroughs andtheories. Indeed, he is a man who made great leaps and bounds in theworld of physics and chemistry and there are things worth findingout about this scientist.

    His Early Life

Gustav Kirchoff was born in Konigsberg, East Prussia where hisfather, Friedrich Kirchoff, worked as a law councilor. FriedrichKirchoff had a very strong sense of duty to the state of Prussia and Johanna Henriette Wittke was his wife. The Kirchoff familybelonged to an intellectual community of Konigsberg that wasflourishing and being the most promising of his parents’ children,Gustav was raised with the mindset that serving the state was reallythe only open course for him. In the state of Prussia, University staffand professors were considered civil servants and so his parents

believed that it was the best place for him since it was where hecould put his brains to work to serve his state.

Gustav Kirchoff excelled in school and given his academic aptitude, his career flowed naturally. He went to school in Konigsberg at theAlbertus University of Konigsberg. It was founded by the first dukeof Prussia, Albert back in 1544. Jacobi and Franz Neumann set up a

mathematics-physics seminar as a joint project in Konigsberg. In thisseminar, Jacobi and Neumann used to teach their students differentresearch methods. The seminar started in 1833 and Kirchoff attendedit from 1843 to 1846. It was very unfortunate that Jacobi fell ill duringthe year 1843 and so it turned out to be Neumann who had had thebigger influence on Kirchoff.

At that time, Neumann was interested in mathematical physics mostof all and it was at the same time that Kirchhoff began his studies atKonigsberg. Neumann was then working on electrical inductions.Neumann had, in fact, just submitted the first of two major papers hewrote on the subject of electrical induction. This happened in theyear 1845 while Kirchoff was his student. At the University ofKonigsberg, Kirchoff was taught by Friedrich Jules Richelot. His Work

During the time he was studying under Neumann, he made the firstof many outstanding research contributions that were related toelectrical current. In 1845, he announced Kirchoff’s laws and theyallowed the calculation of currents, voltages and resistances inelectrical circuits that had multiple loops. This further extended

German mathematician Georg Ohm’s work.A couple of years later, Gustav Kirchoff’s work would lead torecognize this error and prod him to come up with a better andkeener understanding of how the theory of electrostatics and electriccurrents could be and should be combined.

He graduated from university in the year 1847 and made the move toBerlin. The conditions were rather poor in the GermanConfederation at that time and it proved to be a difficult time.Emotions and tensions from the citizens were running high andtrouble always seemed to be around the corner. Crop failures andhigh rates of unemployment also led to disturbances and discontentwithin the people. Trouble was also sparked when news came outthat Louis-Philippe had been overthrown by an 1848 uprising inParis. Not only was there revolution in several German states but

people also took up arms in Berlin. The monarchy was in troublewith the socialists and the republicans. Fortunately, Kirchoff was ina privileged position and was unaffected by the events of the state sohe pressed on with his chosen career. Bunsen moved to take ateaching spot in Breslau and this was where he met Robert Bunsenwho also became his lifelong friend. Bunsen moved to teach at theUniversity of Heidelberg in 1852 and he made it a point to makearrangements for Kirchoff to move to Heidelberg to teach as well.

Aside from working with electricity and currents, he also mademajor discoveries in the field of chemistry. In the year 1869, GustavKirchoff and Robert Bunsen (developer of the Bunsen burner withhelp from his assistant) discovered cesium and rubidium. With theuse of a spectroscope they had invented together, they managed tospot these two alkali metals that the world had no previousknowledge of. Their discoveries marked the beginning of a new era, that is, they introduced a new way to look for new elements. Theyfound that the first 50 elements found – not counting the onesknown since ancient eras – were released by electrolysis or productsof chemical reactions.

    Personal and Later Life

Gustav Kirchoff got married to one Clara Richelot who was thedaughter of Friedrich Jules Richelot, his mathematics professor inKonigsberg. Together, he and Clara had two daughters and threesons but Clara died in 1869 and he was left to raise his children. Thiswas made all the more challenging since he had a disability thatforced him to use crutches or a wheelchair most of the time. In 1872,he got married to Luise Brommel who hailed from Heidelberg.

He had numerous offers from other universities but he was quitehappy and contented with Heidelberg so he turned down all offers. However, his health continued to fail him and he realized that theexperimental side of the subject that he so loved was becomingimpossible for him to accomplish. In 1875, he made the move toBerlin where he became chair of mathematical physics. The spot

allowed him to teach and do research without having to carry outany experiments. After he took the position in Berlin, he came outwith his best known treatise which is the Vorlesungen übermathematische Physik.

He died in 1887 and his final resting place could now be found in St.Matthaus Kirchoff Cemetary in Berlin. His grave is just a few metersaway from those of the Brothers Grimm.

KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE Cyclodextrin dissolves away cholesterol crystals

Cardiovascular disease from atherosclerosis is one of the mostcommon causes of death worldwide. Inflammation plays a crucialrole in atherosclerosis and cholesterol crystals are considered to beearly triggers in the development of the disease.

An international team has now found that cyclodextrin dissolvescholesterol crystals and reduces atherosclerotic plaques. This is apromising therapeutic approach for treating atherosclerosis. Theirfind was published in Science Translational Medicine.Cyclodextrin works by reprogramming macrophages so that they donot cause such a strong inflammatory response in blood vessels thatcontain cholesterol crystals. The cyclodextrin also dissolvescholesterol crystals so that the cholesterol can be excreted from the

body in urine. The result is prevention of plaque formation and evenatherosclerotic plaque reduction in mice. Furthermore, whenresearchers used cyclodextrin to treat biopsies of plaques fromhuman carotid arteries, they found similar results.

The study points to cholesterol crystals as a target for treatment ofatherosclerosis, meaning that using cyclodextrin to dissolve thecrystals could affect how the disease is treated. The original idea for the test of cyclodextrin came from ChrisHempel, an American mother whose twin daughters are affected by arare illness called Niemann-Pick Type C disease, in whichcholesterol accumulates in the body. The children are being treatedwith cyclodextrin with promising results.Hempel read about previous research on cholesterol crystalsconducted by senior researcher Eicke Latz from the UniversityHospital Bonn and his colleagues from the Center of MolecularInflammation Research (CEMIR) at the Norwegian University ofScience and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. She contacted Dr.Latz to suggest that they test cyclodextrin as a possible treatment foratherosclerosis.
