T ime moves quickly and Gnostic Corner is no exception – we grow, we expand and

we always reflect. It’s easy to get caught up in the constant urge to move forward and there is little time left for regular observation on how things are going.

This issue we consider the effect that too much Yang may be having on our adrenal glands, we consider how we respond to misunderstanding, and we look at the value of a hug.

On Gnostic corner you can always find people hugging. It’s a way of saying “I care about you.”

A great way to care about yourself would be a visit to one of our dedicated therapists at the Healing Centre or look after yourself with a raw food superfood smoothie from the Organics new Smoothie Bar.

We hope you find our little magazine like a reassuring hug!

Gnostic comes from the ancient greek word gnosis, which means knowledge gained through personal experience.

PERSPECTIVE

These words are subjective, and that means they are open to interpretation by the

individual. We all see things differently. Because our life experiences influence the

way we look at the world each day, we are bound to see things from different angles.

In most cases we view our own behaviour as normal and everyone else’s is a variation on that. It gets really hard at times to understand some people’s point of view, certainly their behaviour – even their ethics.

We tend to deceive ourselves by thinking that we understand certain people, we feel that because they have a familiar point of view to ours they are right, yet this just means their experiences have been similar to ours. Maybe they grew up in a society with a similar code of ethical behaviour, or their family followed the same principles. We can’t ever completely understand the motivations of others. Gnostics understand that all – absolutely ALL– conflict comes from misunderstanding.

It certainly makes life easier if we mix with people who have values like ours. We know what to expect from them and we also know what we can get away with. However, real spiritual growth comes when we dare to step outside our own ethics, morals and principles and try understanding a completely different culture.

An easy, less disturbing way to do this is to read about civilisations from the past. Try to really get a feeling for their behaviour and understand what motivated them – why they accepted the things that they did. Then see them as your own ancestors, imagine how the changes that came with time had an influence on them and eventually you end up in the 21st century in your own life. You might be able to see that the threads of influence through time change what is acceptable behaviour.

Things that we once thought of as absurd or ridiculous now seem not so far left field when we see the influences that happened along the way to lead us to our current understanding. And remember we will be judged by others for our limited views also.

Everyone is doing the best they can at all times, given the limitations they have that are caused by fears, doubts and lack of under-standing.

When we accept the things that influence other peoples’ ethics, morals and principles we can live without conflict. And when we realise that ours are based on opinions we might even be prepared to let them change with time.

There was utter consciousness, infinitely deliberate assembly, but there was no urgency in your creation.

You were not created as a race towards an end goal; you were created simply and wholly for the pleasure of the realisation of the ability to create.

And you, this small singular you, were created as an echo of such a creator -

Your creations are simply and wholly for the pleasure of the realisation of the ability to create.

So too did you inherit perfect timing.

You grew up in umina here on the central coast. Tell us a bit about that.

I grew up in a very open and unconventional household. I was encouraged to live my truth and put the needs of others before my own. I was a fiercely independent and autonomous child, and still today I feel lucky that my family nurture this element of my personality. When did you move to the city, and how was that adjustment?

It was exciting and has turned out to be one of the most enriching times of my life. I always try to roll with any situation based on how I feel, completely dictating my whereabouts based on my feelings. In 2009 I was feeling that it was time to leave the central coast. I moved into a cosy terrace house in Sydney’s Surry Hills; a humble abode in walking distance to yoga studios, organic cafés and adorable inde-pendently owned bookshops. This very cool hood remained my wellbeing haven for 2 years before the ocean called again and I was “feeling” North Bondi. How did your book Hippies in the City come about?

At the time my 9-to-5 gig was working full time for the aromatherapy company Perfect Potion. I was so inspired by helping to heal and connect with people that each day I would come home excited to write, research, cook, create

recipes and express my passion and knowledge through my writing.

I deeply loved every second of the 2 years I spent constructing my book – the sleepless nights, the dead-lines, and the unwavering commitment. Even the loneliness of a writer’s life was ok, because deep down I knew my soul was birthing something infinite. I had no choice but to create Hippies in the City, its process was fluid and organic. What does the word ‘hippy’ mean to you?

For me I believe today’s “Hippies” have new ideas on different topics that deal with the changing times. The hippie legacy can be observed in contemporary culture in myriad forms, including health food, music festivals, yoga, meditation, conscious living and sustain-ability. But some of us still believe in ideals and practices of the original hippies. Bob Dylan once said from the stage that he was never a hippie, but he was an “honorary hippie”. I’d like to say the same of myself.Your workshops are popular. What kind of things do you cover?

I want people to feel inspired to take steps towards living a more holistic lifestyle. I demon-

WHAT IS Gnostic CorneR?

What began in 1998 as Gnostic Forest –- a small retail shop with a spiritual theme, selling crystals, jewellery, inspirational books and a bit of ethnic clothing – has

grown into what is now known as Gnostic Corner. It’s a trading co-op with 10 businesses including, organics , a cafe, healing centre, yoga school, flower shop, angel and fairie shop, jewellery and crystals, hemp and bamboo clothing, a takeaway cafe along with the original Gnostic Forest.

Each of the businesses has its own theme and is independently owned, we are all family or friends and we work together co-operating, not competing. We share resources and cross promote. In the 16 years we have grown as a destination for both the locals and the tourists. All of this during the GFC.

While the rest of the world was worrying about how to survive, our small business collective was busy helping each other and creating a village atmosphere for our community to enjoy. The secret could be turning off the television and not reading the news papers, that way we didn’t know what to worry about and instead we could use our energy to help each other.

If one of the younger businesses is struggling there is someone with more experience to mentor them and offer solutions. We also produce our own magazine quarterly to offer little pieces of inspiration and show what’s new on the corner.

It all looks very deliberate, but the truth is it wasn’t! Just by having faith in a benevolent universe we are prepared to take risks and time has proven that by supporting the other guy we are really strengthening our entire field. – Mary Holstein

strate how to integrate aromatherapy, nutrition, relaxation techniques, herbs and other natural therapies into your daily life in order to manage stress and anxiety. The workshops are always fun, interactive and insightful. I want people to leave with a head full of information and a heart full of courage! if there was one thing you could change in the world what would that be?

I’d teach people how to have a better relationship with themselves. If we loved ourselves, we wouldn’t start wars, buy things we don’t need, over-consume or contribute to other people’s unhap-piness. The one area I would focus on above all is empathy. All we can do is accept ourselves for doing the best we can do with what we have. What are the three most important things in your life?

Freedom, Creativity and FOOD! Your van is really well set up and even uses solar power?

Yeah it sure is a cool little nomadic nook! I am rather proud that my van is doing its bit towards sustainable living. As a writer and traveller I use the van more as a home office and I pinch myself every time I think about how all electrical appliances (laptop, kettle, fairy lights, phone charger) in the van are powered by the sun!You travel a lot these days – how do you stay healthy and centred?

The foundation of a healthy mind and body is meditation. The daily practice of simply slowing down to breathe, centre myself and acknowl-edging that I don’t have to be ruled by mind, is key to balance and productivity. I live a life that can be chaotic at times, so I manage myself by eating well, getting to bed early and dedicat-ing as much time as I can for relaxation and reflection. What are some places that have really captured your heart?

A mellow fisherman’s village with exquisite sunsets in Amed, Indonesia.

Wild deer, sweet potatoes, misty morning temples in Nara, Japan.

Coffee, afternoon walks, family, Southern Highlands Australia… Do you have plans for another book? What can we look forward to?

The only advice I have for writers is to write. Because when we don’t we are miserable!

So, yes another Hippies in the City book is well and truly on its way. You can look forward to a sacred manual of recipes and remedies for food, body and spirit. A user’s guide that very much delves into exploring ancient healing systems and tribal traditions.

Hippies in the City is available at Gnostic Forest. Find out more about Rita’s workshops at: www.hippiesinthecity.com/workshops

Smooth move

Smoothies are a quick and easy way to nourish your body with essential nutrients. A good balanced

selection of whole fruit and vegetables including the skins and pith will give you the fibre, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals all ready to be absorbed.

It’s not always easy getting your daily requirement of vegetables but a handful of greens in your smoothie will give you extra energy and make no difference to the taste.

Kale, cucumber, celery, apple, pear, avocado, coconut, banana, chia seeds, berries, almond milk and superfoods can be added to the mix in any combination.

‘Superfoods’ are foods rich in nutrients which can provide amazing dietary and healing potential. The top ten superfoods are cacao, maca powder, goji berries, spirulina, blue green algae, marine phytoplankton, aloe vera, hemp seed, coconut products.

We are all constantly dealing with pressure and trying to fit more into our lives. Finding ways to improve our health and wellbeing is so important. A meal in a blender is a great place to start – you’ll feel the difference!

Gnostic organic’s new Smoothie Bar is up and blending…

I’ll admit it: I’m a hugger. There’s nothing I like more than getting up close and personal

with another hairy human. I hug my husband, child and dog as often as they’ll let me. I hug friends. I hug hello and goodbye. I hug taxi drivers and shop assistants. I’d hug the guy who makes my coffee if I could reach over the counter. In fact, if you live locally and you haven’t experienced a hearty Toon hug, then please get in touch, I’m ready and willing.

But why do I love hugging so much? Well according to the interweb, hugging

is good for you. From a medical standpoint it lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, boosts memory and floods your innards with the ‘feel good’ hormone oxytocin.

Just ten minutes of hugging a day can give you a more positive outlook, and apparently those couples who regularly entwine them-selves in a huggy fashion have a stronger emotional bond.

Yoga teacher Marcus Felicetti advises us that if we get our quota of ‘eight hugs a day’ we can combat sickness, disease, depression, lone-liness, anxiety and stress. Sounds awesome, right?

But if you’re not a natural hugger, or don’t have anyone regularly willing to submit to a good hard hugging – what then?

Well, a company on the East Cost of America has developed a solution – by offering pro-fessional snugglers for hire with a range of ‘snuggle buddies’ who promise to sooth away your stress with hugs.

Expect to shell out anything from $60 for an hour-long cuddle, or if you’re in need of some

more intensive hugging, they also offer a 10-hour overnight package for $400.

(N.B. The service markets it’s self as entirely platonic – so those wanting a little more than a hug need not apply.)

Of course, touch ther-apy has been around for a long time in one form or another and has been used to treat a variety of physical and psychologi-cal ailments.

Health experts argue that after touch ther-apy, such as massage, there’s a noticeable reduction in the action of the hypothalamic area of the brain (which controls the so-called flight or flight response’). Touching and hugging comforts and relaxes us, stops us feeling threat-ened and therefore promotes a sense of security and well-being.

It’s clear that there are many people who could benefit from some serious hugging, which is the reason Juan Mann started his famed FREE HUGS campaign (www.freehugscampaign.org), hugging complete strangers to brighten up their lives.

Although he was eventually banned – due to public liability issues (seriously!) – the spirit of his hugging manifesto lives on!

So today, if you’re feeling a little blue (or know someone who is) reach out, hug them and share in the warm glow that comes from platonically and physically connecting with another human being.

out – exactly how we are feeling and why we think they are an idiot! Surprisingly this very rarely improves things. After hundreds of years and different civiliza-tions, while we have been busy inventing things to simplify our lives (yeh right!), still we haven’t evolved past this basic flaw of getting offended when we don’t understand someones else’s view.

When you go back to the first statement you get a clue of where to look for the answer. You are going to need to understand what is going on in the other guy’s head. Barking on about how you are feeling is probably not going to give you more information about their situation.

A successful method is to ask questions about what you can’t yet understand, and then be prepared to listen and try to get it. Take time to consider what has motivated the other person. There is always more information than we realise.

In the 2006 movie What the Bleep – Down Rabbit Hole we were told that the human brain receives billions of pieces of information in every moment, but our limited consciousness only allows us to comprehend a fraction of it. And to make it worse we recognise what we have previously experienced before we take in any new information. So often when we are upset we are projecting a previous scenario onto a new situation. Oops!

With this is mind, if we want to taken in any new understanding about a conflict, we are going to need to be really paying attention and consciously ready to accept the other guy’s view. Once we can understand what they’re saying we can look for a solution that meets everyone’s needs.

Mary Holstein – Gnostic Forest Founder. I enjoy the challenge of understanding others daily!

This is a Gnostic Perspective from ancient times. Regardless of which time in history

we find ourselves, whether it’s Prehistoric Man, Biblical times, the Middle Ages or this modern age of technology, conflict still arises and con-flict comes from misunderstanding.

We may have invented fire to keep us warm, and the wheel to help move stuff around and even wireless communication so we can con-tact each other 24/7. But we still haven’t solved the issue of conflict and what to do about how upset we all get because of it.

Strangers upset each other over the smallest of things, and neighbours are great at it – the fence blocks your view, the dog is too loud and sometimes they even park in the wrong places! But no-one seems to be better at causing con-flict than the people we are closest to – family and partners.

You could guess that this is because we spend more time with them and we get more opportunity to have different points of view.

Most of the time when we get upset we tell the other guy – often loudly so they don’t miss

Your name? Jeff Phillips – I also use ‘Jeff Weffer-son’ for my radio show and online. Your religious/spiritual belief and its lineage? I am not religious but I do live by what I think true Christianity and Buddhism are really about. My spiritual orientation is a continually evolving personal paradigm of expanding my horizons of identity.

This includes increasing the resolution of my awareness at every level, living and acting re-sponsibly for the benefit of the ‘seventh gener-ation’. I’m trying to inspire my fellow humans to love Mother Earth and to honour their creativity as well. My creative projects are my spiritual endeavours. How did you come to your beliefs? Where I am now represents a progression that’s been going on my entire life. This is based on my own inner awareness as well as the influence of various ‘teachers’, including friends, family and people I’ve met in my extensive travels, and my person-al relationship with Mother Earth, all my family of life, and the Great Spirit herself. How have your beliefs shaped you personally? Rather than saying that ‘my beliefs have shaped me personally’ I think it would be more accurate to say that who and what I am is an evolving expression of all the experiences, motivations, inspirations, and encounters which comprise the total spectrum of my life so far. What are your challenges spiritually? I love people, and my experience has been that people in general are really kind and nice, no matter where you are. Having said that, I find that I do not identify with some of the most fundamen-tal and under-lying values, beliefs and assump-tions on which ‘civilization’ is, in fact, based. For example, money. To me, it’s just this incredible delusion that we are choosing to keep alive and

well. I believe in things that are REAL in ways that money isn’t…like people, nature, clouds, love, life, Mother Earth…clean air and water, food that is uncontaminated by poisons. See what I mean? How does your practice take form? I do not separate out the ‘spiritual’ from the ‘non-spiritual.’ I don’t have ‘practices’ that I routinely do. My art is a form of meditation, my life is in service to LIFE. I greet the sun (Taiowa to the Hopi) every morning and say goodnight in the evening. I also burn a lot of beautiful white grandfather sage daily, the smoke carries my prayers to the Great Spirit. I am also learning native American flute, I have a great F# aromatic cedar Anasazi flute and play it, and my other instruments out in Nature often. To what end do you practice your beliefs? It’s my aim to share this awesome journey with as many wonderful fellow beings as possible. To express all of the divine creativity with which I’ve been endowed, and always asking the Great Spirit to be ever more worthy of their highest guidance and abundance manifestation.Where will you go when you leave your body? I don’t think I will be going anywhere that I don’t already feel or experience in the depths of my being. I sense eternity and eternal love and infinite creativity within myself all the time. I will still be “here and now” (Everything. Every-where, Everywhen.) only just ”more“! But ulti-mately it’s an unknown, so I really don’t know. It can ONLY be another leg of the journey!

FUTURE FOOD

HEMP

Australia’s hemp industry has come in leaps and bounds in the last few years, but what do you think are the current “bumps in the road” before we catch up with overseas success? We are not even legally allowed to sell hemp foods for human consumption when hemp seed has time and time again been proven to be one of the most nutitrious and complete food sources on this planet. What’s the latest update on hemp food legislation in Australia? A decision is due to be given in June. However due to the panel strategically planning the decision only days before the cut off, it means the decision is most likely going to be pushed back another six months. Does this mean eating hemp is illegal? No it doesn’t. What would regulation of hemp foods mean for the Australian public? It would mean a healthier future for Australians, guaranteed local jobs, increased tax revenue, the opportuni-ty to create an export market and help clean up our environment. You recently went up to a hemp farm on the north coast. What was it like working with the raw product? The highlight of the trip was that the local community rallied around to help harvest the crop, partially by hand. It shows that we as communities can go back to creating localised industries with hemp.

Alex Impey is the owner of Gnostic Hemporium. Visit the website at www.hempstore.com.au

Hemp is a legal food in Europe, America and Canada – so what’s Australia’s problem? Alex Impey shares his passion for developing our local industry.

When did you first gain an interest in hemp? I got interested in hemp as a teenager after reading some interesting facts about it. Funny enough though, I got seriously interested about 5 years ago after finding out about a funky little hemp store called Gnostic Hempori-um in Woy Woy…What’s your background in fibres, farming, food and retail? I worked in the UK Hemp Foods industry for a company that grew and produced all of their own hemp seed products. It was a fantastic opportunity as I got to see the entire process of hemp from germination, to harvest and the finally the processing of hemp seed into hemp seed oil, hemp protein, shelled hemp seeds and hemp milk. My main job was to market these products at various consumer and retailer trade shows in the UK. It was a great experience that has allowed me to bring knowledge here to the Australian market and help establish certain areas. What’s the most ridiculous misconception about hemp and how are you working to smash it? Misinformation from our Govern-ment over the past 40 years has lead people to believe hemp to be a harmful plant to our soci-ety. I am working to change the misconception of this plant by providing information and key facts so people can understand how beneficial it actually is.if you had a dollar for every time someone joked about getting “high” off hemp products what would you buy? I would fund a campaign to further educate the general community on the benefits of hemp and how we can incorpo-rate it into our communities!

MIND

“....in general, the default setting of the brain is to overestimate threats, underestimate opportunities, and underestimate resources both for coping with threats and for fulfilling opportunities...” – Dr. Rick Hansen, Hardwiring Happiness

News that humans have inherited a brain that is programmed for negativity, stress

and anxiety might seem, at first glance, pretty depressing. However, the good news is that, as individuals, we are not inadequate, broken or faulty. It is the way we have been wired. Humans have evolved with a bias towards anxiety and fear as a protective mechanism. In early human history it was crucial to be vigilant and prepared to respond immediately to environmental dan-gers. Wild animals and rival tribes posed a con-stant threat. Not only have we inherited a brain with a tendency to hold onto fear and anxiety but our brains have also evolved to quickly let go of positive and optimistic thoughts and feelings.

Unfortunately this bias towards hyper-vig-ilance and avoiding danger does not serve us well in our modern urban life. Calmness, confidence and optimism are much more useful states of mind and certainly more pleasant.

It might not be much compensation to know that a tendency to pessimistic thoughts and fear is part of our evolutionary make up. Howev-er, it is good news that we can re-wire the neural

pathways of our brains for positive change and for more calmness and confidence.

Mindfulness meditation has become a hot topic and a useful import from the ancient prac-tice of Buddhism because it is an effective way to reduce stress responses and dampen down the flighty nervous system.

It has become a much researched topic. Prac-tices have been modified and linked with other cognitive techniques for even more effective-ness.

Dr Rick Hansen’s book, Hardwiring Happiness, is a handbook of mindfulness techniques. One of Dr Hansen’s very effective strategies is to “take in the good.” This is a deceptively simple practice that only requires a person to linger over positive experiences throughout a normal day. Dr Hansen explains that by absorbing each positive thought or feeling for an extra 20 sec-onds, over time the brain structure changes and feelings of calmness and confidence become the new default position.

Of course, becoming skilful and achieving an outcome in any field requires consistent practice and that is especially true in changing the brain. But how easy is this strategy – linger-ing for twenty seconds over the many pleasant, micro-experiences of a usual day: a kind word given or received; a glance at a vividly coloured flower; the warmth of the sun on the face; a smile from a child or simply completing a task. So many opportunities to re-wire the brain for greater happiness and only 20 seconds at a time!

Meditation does not have to be connected to religion or spiritual practice and it does not require equipment or a difficult body posture.

All it takes is to simply sit in a comfortable position in a quiet space, indoors or outdoors. Close your eyes, relax your shoulders, breath through your nose. Keep your lips closed and your teeth slightly ajar. Rest the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Let go of your thoughts.

Thoughts will inevitably arise. Treat them like passing clouds. Let them move by without adhering to them.

One traditional technique to stop the mind chatter is to focus on the breath. To be exact, focus on the sensation you get from the air passing through your nostrils.

Start with 10 minutes per day and increase the time by 5 minutes every week. Soon you will feel the balance of yin and yang return to your life.

Stefan Hafner is an acupuncturist and TCM practitioner. See www.gnostichealing.com.au. He is passionate about Chinese Medicine, leeches and motorbikes.

HEALING

TOO MUCH YANG? Overstimulation is a common challenge to the balance of yin and yang.

Yin and Yang, the ancient principle of Chi-nese medicine is all about balance. The Tai

Ji (Greater ultimate) symbol of swirling fields of black and white denote two interdepend-ent opposites. Once the yin (black) phase has reached its maximum expansion, it will turn into the opposite yang (white) phase and vice versa. The little dot with the opposite colour shows that when one phase is at it’s greatest, it already contains the seed of the opposite phase. Yin and yang can stand for any pair of opposites: hot- cold, dry- moist, thick- thin, loud- quiet, active- resting, expanding- contracting and so on. The aim of the Chinese medicine doctor is to bring yin and yang of the body into balance and restore it to homeostasis, a stable equilibrium of physiological processes.

Overstimulation is a common challenge to the balance of yin and yang. Constant exposure to external sensory input is considered an excess of yang. In our society it is easy to be connected to consumer electronics as a source of infor-mation, social interaction and entertainment during every waking hour. It is not unusual for someone to work on a computer for 8 hours to then come home and spend another three hour in front of the TV before finally going to sleep. Too much yang will eventually turn into it’s op-posite and cause exhaustion, high stress levels, adrenal fatigue and low immunity. In terms of brain health this means loss of concentration, creativity and memory.

Meditation is a yin type activity that is suited perfectly for counteracting an excess of yang. Modern research tells us that regular medita-tion has many health benefits. It helps protect us from heart disease, cancer and dementia. It also improves sleep, concentration and the quality of our social interaction.

village to ask. The Wise Woman led him down a path, deep into the countryside below.

After some time they came upon a large house went inside. Inside its many rooms they found lots of people and many tables with an delicious array of food.

The old man noticed a strange thing. The peo-ple, all thin and hungry, were holding chopsticks 12 feet long. They tried to feed themselves, but could not get the food to their mouths with such long chopsticks.

The old man turned to the Wise Woman, “Now I know what hell looks like,” he said, “will you please show me what Heaven looks like?”

She led him down the same path a little further until they came to another large house much like the first. Inside this home they saw many people well fed and happy but they too had chopsticks 12 feet long.

This perplexed the old man. He asked, “I see all of these people have 12 feet chopsticks too, yet they are well fed and happy, please explain this to me. The Wise Woman replied, “in Heaven we feed each other.”

Emily typed this article after cradling a baby rat as it died. She hopes it felt loved and might come back as something more people show kindness to.

As if we were in heaven…

What are the edges to your compassionate actions? Will you help only those you

know? Only those who are similar to you? Do you help only the needy?

My mum and I often discuss compassion and how modern media and social media expand our “knowing” of harm far wider than it has ever been. We now know more of wars, religious persecution, social unrest and other suffering.Perhaps we might have never met these people or known of this heartache had it not been deemed news or “story” worthy.

This begs the question what are we to do with this information? How do you exist in the world knowing of its sadness?

Our guess? Do what you can, where you can, for whom you can. Its no use wishing people in far away places were kinder, more peaceful, more loving unless we look at the ways we too can do this in our own circles. Ripple that good feeling, that kindness out from you in all your actions so it can reverberate around the world

How are your ripples?A pARAblE…An ancient Chinese parable talks of an old man who knew he was going to die soon.

Pranayama (Nadi Shodhana)

Pranayama or breath control is one of 8 limbs (building blocks) of Yoga. This “sanskrit” word is made of two words, Prana (life force) and Ayama

(control). Pranayama can be defined as “control of the flow of life force.” Breath is

the bridge or the link between the body and mind. It is a vital component of any properly structured Yoga practice, the breath is the “prime mover” of the body in Yoga movement and a focal point for the mind in meditation.

One type of Pranayama is nadi Shodhana or alternate nostril breathing that is suitable for both beginners and advanced Yoga practitioners. Nadi is a channel or an energetic pathway through which prana (life force) flows.

To practice alternate nostril breathing sit in a comfortable position with your chest lifted and shoulders relaxed, be conscious of your posture. Place the thumb of the right hand against the right side of your nose and the ring finger on the left side of your nose (the index and middle fin-ger rest on the forehead). Gently block off the right nostril with your thumb and inhale through the left nostril, block off the left nostril and breath out off the right nostril. Continue breathing through alternate nostrils for 10 rounds

This pranayama practice balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain, it has a calming and focusing affect on the mind. Nadi shodhana is a great way of centering your mind on the present moment before a movement routine. It also helps control stress and anxiety. Therapeu-tically it has a positive affect on circulation and respiration.

TRAVEL/VIETNAM

Ho Chi Min City, formerly known as Saigon, was the first stop on this well planned,

action-packed itinerary. And it was here that the six intrepid tourists bravely put their lives on the line by partaking in the crazy sport of “crossing the road!”The basic rules to follow were:1. Remain calm at all times2. Keep your eyes on your destination – the

other side of the road.3. NEVER EVER look at the hundreds of motor

bikes speeding at you from every direction.4. Walk at a slow but constant speed, praying

all the time!(I’m happy to report that by some miracle, we

didn’t lose a single person from our group!)Our penultimate night in this noisy, non-stop,

bustling city left us with a bitter-sweet taste in our mouths before departing on day three for our cruise on the Mekong.

All the travel websites say that a night tour of Saigon is a must, so we were very excited when our trusty TLM informed us that she had booked the services of the guy in the pink shirt who had five friends with bikes. He was chosen because he produced a dusty torn notebook from under his seat with testimonials from other Australi-ans who had successfully used his service, and also pink is a trustworthy colour.

With much excitement and anticipation, we waited patiently on the pavement when our posse arrived to collect us as arranged at 6pm. Suddenly, like an over scripted western, the sher-iff appeared with the cavalry and arrested......half of our trusty night-riders in pink shirts!

The ‘Gnostic’s Six’ 2014 tour of Vietnam got off to a flying start when Tour Leader Mary (TLM) made her first decision to board the train to the airport on the “quiet” carriage with her merry band of trippers. No need to describe the results of that decision – their raucous behaviour set the scene for the two week adventure that lay ahead…

Page 27: Gnostic iss6

G 27

With looks of bewilderment, confusion and disbelief on our faces, we decided we should high-tail it (before they came back for us) and make our way to the river front and the floating restaurants for dinner.

Spotting what closely looked like a pirate ship (a little too closely as it turned out) we saun-tered on board with relief and celebration at the forefront of our minds....we weren’t going to let a little mishap like an arrest dampen our Asian Adventure!

It was here that our seventh member of the Gnostic Crusaders joined us..... (See right!)

The rest of the trip included a three day cruise on the Mekong, a two day stay at ‘The Crazy House’ in Da Lat (very appropriate for this bunch) and the final five days in Hoi An.

An absolutely amazeballs adventure with some pretty cool dudes; I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

(I must warn you however, if you’re ever think-ing of booking a tour with ‘Gnostic Travel’ just keep some extra space in your luggage....you never know who you might be bringing home with you!)

The following is an excerpt from the diary of Mr Moet Le Skank:Dear Diary,

i can’t believe my luck! After spending most of

my life in the bowels of this miserable ship, i have finally been set free!

Turns out, a motley crew of Aussies holidaying from down under, were either ‘stupidly rich’ or just plain ‘stupid’. They paid $US200 for me – unchilled!

They must have loved me though…they ran back on board to take me with them on their adventures….(i don’t think they’re stupidly rich either!)

They’ve never let me out of their sights since and have included me in all of their photographs; i feel like a member of their ‘gnostic’ family!MOET LE SKANK NOW HAS HIS OWN FACEBOOK PAGE AND AN INCREASING NUMBER OF FOLLOWERS. ‘LIKE’ HIS PAGE TO FOLLOW HIS ADVENTURES IN Oz…

JUNEYou may meet up with people who have a very charismatic and magnetic personality.Be very aware as these people may manipulate their way into your trust with a seemingly compassionate heart then like a lightning bolt take your trust and run like the wind. It will make you feel like they have gotten away with murder, so therefore give nothing away to anyone that you are not prepared to lose. Use your wisdom, respect and honour yourself and acquire the knowledge you need before you part with anything.

JULY You may feel like you have committed yourself which in turn makes you feel overwhelmed and brings stress into your relationships. Breaking old patterns is important especially with those that you have a turbulent relationship with, as you may feel you’re going through emotional battles or even blackmail. Expectations may be rather high, feeling needy and wanting more love and attention will get you absolutely nowhere.Remain calm and look at things with an objective outlook, and let life take its natural course.

AUGUSTFeeling a little disillusioned with the world and the Governments running it will have you looking more into the philosophical teachings and realizing you need a new belief system. Religious or Spiritual topics may also be important. Ethical and moral teachings also become interesting as you feel the challenge to change your views on how to govern yourself. This will bring to you some confidence and optimism that your future will be successful knowing you are the one in charge. Sporting activities can be an outlet to release any pent up frustration.
