GENEVA – A local animalrescue organization, Homesfor Endangered and Lost Pets, said it will take responsibilityfor the dog injured by a car inGeneva on June 23.

The dog, a 42-pound boxermix, is recovering from hisinjuries at the St. CharlesVeterinary Clinic, practicemanager Marty Strauss said.Geneva police took the dog tothe St. Charles emergency vetclinic, which is housed in thesame building, she said, andthen he was taken to the clin-ic for further treatment.

“We have donated our timeand services and are going tocontinue to care for the dog atour clinic and he’ll be goingto a foster home when he isready,” Strauss said. “He isable to walk and urinates onhis own. He is so cute, but he’sscared and hurt – but doing somuch better.”

The dog had a catheter be-cause he was in so much painhe could not get up to urinate. But since that has been re-moved, the plastic collar alsowas taken off because thereis no risk of him pulling thecatheter out, Strauss said.

The dog had no collar ormicrochip and no owner hascome forward. Without a giv-en name, the emergency clin-ic dubbed him Holden, afterHolden Caulfield, the 17-year-old protagonist of author J.D.Salinger’s “The Catcher inthe Rye,” Strauss said.

“Holden – I think it worksfor him. He is just as cute ascan be,” Strauss said. “Hold-en has no broken bones, buthe will need extensive dentalwork. He has broken teethfrom the accident and someneed to be extracted surgi-cally. He also had some lac-erations that had to be sewedup.”

Michelle Clancy of HELPsaid the dog will be at the clin-ic for a while longer beforehe can go to a foster home, unless an owner claims himwith proof of ownership. Theall-volunteer organizationfosters dogs and cats to be eli-

gible for adoption and has anemergency fund for medicaltreatment.

If people want to donate toHolden’s care, they can payvia PayPal at HELP’s website,www.helpinganimals.org, orsend a check to HELP, Box972, St. Charles, IL 60174.

Strauss said Holden’s own-er still could be looking forhim. The vet clinic has hisphoto and information post-ed on its Facebook page inhopes of reuniting him withhis owner.

“Somebody owned thisdog because he is neutered,”Strauss said. “He could havetraveled a long way. He isthin, and he may have beenrunning for a long time. May-be he had a collar, but it felloff. And there is no micro-chip.”

Strauss recommended petowners get their dogs andcats microchipped as a goodway to be reunited with themif they get lost. She praisedHELP for coming forward totake care of Holden.

“They are such a greatorganization,” Strauss said.“They try to save every ani-mal they can.”

Housingmarket showsmore signs of strength in countyBy JONATHAN [email protected]

Home sellers found signifi-cantly more buyers in May, as thehousing market in and aroundthe Tri-Cities continued to showsigns of newfound strength in re-bounding from the depths of itscrash.

In May, home sales in theTri-Cities of St. Charles, Genevaand Batavia, combined, increased61.2 percent from the same montha year earlier, according to the

most recent round of home-salesdata.

The MainStreet Organizationof Realtors, a trade group repre-senting Chicago area real estateagents, reported that 166 detachedsingle-family homes sold in theTri-Cities in May. A year earlier, the three communities combinedto log 103 home sales.

That increase marked an accel-eration of the trend that had beenongoing through the spring. InApril, for instance, home sales ac-tivity in the Tri-Cities increased

by 34 percent from 2012 to 2013.The local rate of increase also

eclipsed the increase seen inKane County overall in May.

The Illinois Association ofRealtors reported that sales ofsingle-family homes in KaneCounty increased 40 percent fromMay 2012 to May 2013, as 620 sin-gle-family homes were sold in thecounty last month.

GENEVA – Kane CountyBoard members agree that thedistribution of mental healthservices in the county needs tobe improved.

But County Board mem-bers differ over what should bedone to improve that situation.

On June 25, the County

Board received a report fromits Mental Health AdvisoryCommittee. The committeewas established about twoyears ago in response to achange in state law requiringthe county to evaluate waysto improve the disbursementof treatment opportunitiesfor mental illness, substanceabuse and developmental dis-abilities.

In the past 15 months, thecommittee has conducted sur-veys and public forums, andcompiled those results intorecommendations to the Coun-ty Board.

William Beith, assistantGilberts village administratorand mental health committeemember, laid out the three rec-ommendations, which includ-ed creating a central website

to list “relevant treatment op-tions” in Kane County.

The committee furtherasked the county to supportthe concept of establishinga single, countywide board, called a “708 board,” to distrib-ute funds for mental healthservices.

Currently, only portions ofthe county are served by town-ship- or city-based 708 boards,

which were established by vot-ers through local referendums.Seven southern Kane town-ships, including Aurora, Sug-ar Grove, Kaneville and Black-berry, are included in the INC708 Board, while the cities ofSt. Charles and Geneva eachoperate their own 708 boards.

No 708 boards have been es-tablished in the northern por-tions of the county.

Committee OKs$1.18M in grants

By JONATHAN [email protected]

GENEVA – More than $1.18million in grants from the coun-ty’s riverboat fund soon couldbe on its way to more than 40local community service orga-nizations after a County Boardcommittee gave it a nod.

On June 26, the CountyBoard’s Finance Committeeunanimously recommendedthe full County Board approvethe funding requests to be paidout of money received by thecounty from Elgin’s Grand Vic-toria Casino.

The annual grants, whichrange from $5,000 to $98,000, willbe used to fund projects run bythe organizations.

Some grants, for instance, would be used to develop localfood pantries, improve Fox Riv-er water quality, repair home-less shelters, create a visitorscenter in downtown Geneva, expand an arts studio in Bata-via, expand and improve tech-nology at a cancer resource cen-ter in Geneva, and help a localSalvation Army post buy newvehicles to transport food.

Grants were selected forfunding by the County Board’s

Riverboat Committee afteran examination of written re-quests submitted by the orga-nizations.

The money to be awardedcomes from funds the countycollects from the Grand Victo-ria under the terms of a long-standing agreement.

The County Board also ap-proved spending $3.57 millionof this year’s collections fromthe Grand Victoria on pro-grams run by the county gov-ernment.

The amount received annu-ally by the county is tied to theGrand Victoria’s revenue. Thatamount has fallen through theyears from as much as $12 mil-lion more than a decade ago to$4.4 million this year.

To maintain funding levelsfor external grants at about $1million, as they had been inyears past, the County Boardwould need to dip into about $10million in the riverboat fundthat had accumulated throughthe years.

TheFinanceCommitteeonlybriefly discussed the externalgrants before recommendingapproval. The measure could goto the full County Board duringits meeting in July.

ST. CHARLES – For some St.Charles residents, the setting ofLynn Kear’s latest crime fictionnovel might feel eerily familiar.

That’s because the fictionalcity in Kear’s novel, “RelativeInnocence,” is loosely based onSt. Charles, where Kear livedfor about 20 years. She graduat-ed from St. Charles High Schoolin 1975, and her third novel hitbookshelves in February and isavailable online.

The story takes place in asmall Illinois suburb calledSt. James, a fictional city that, much like St. Charles, also issituated on the banks of a riv-er. It follows a spree killer’sson, a suspected serial killer’sdaughter and an attorney whobefriends them. Kear said shereferences St. Charles streetnames, the cold northern Illi-nois weather and the river.

“The river plays a hugepart,” she said, noting that it’scalled the St. James River inher novel. “When you grow upin that area, the river is huge. It’s a big part of life.”

Kear said her previous nov-el, “Tighter Tighter,” also wasbased on a city much like St.Charles. Her first novel, “Mur-der in a Buckhead Garden,” isbased on Atlanta. Kear lived inSt. Charles from the late 1960sto the early 1980s and now livesin Stone Mountain, Ga.

Kear – a novelist, playwrightand biographer – earned de-grees from Aurora College andNorthern Illinois University. She earned her Ph.D. whileliving in Georgia and spent al-most 25 years teaching variouscourses, such as creative writ-ing, film, history and publicspeaking, at colleges and uni-versities. But she credits a lotof her success to the educationshe received while growing upin St. Charles.

“I do want to say that I hadgreat teachers at St. CharlesHigh School. I honestly thinkthat my success, whatever thathas been, has been largely be-cause of that,” she said. “In

teaching, I’ve been around peo-ple without a good education, and I’m so happy to have hadthe opportunity to attend schoolin District 303.”

Kear has written a few biog-raphies, as well as two books onreincarnation, but her novelshave centered on crime fiction.

She said actual crimes some-times inspire the plots of hernovels. She noted that she drewher inspiration for “RelativeInnocence” from a crime thatwas committed in Athens, Ga.,and also is loosely based on the

Drew Peterson case in Chicago.Peterson is a former police offi-cer who was convicted in Feb-ruary of killing his ex-wife.

“I wondered, what would itbe like to be the child of some-body accused of that?” Kearsaid. “There’s something aboutcrime fiction that is very tan-talizing for writers, and I thinkfor readers.”

“Relative Innocence” isavailable to buy online at www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com for $13 to $15, andon Kindle for about $5.

13MYSTERY DINERRestaurant reviews

Taqueria El Sazonwelcome addition toBataviaBATAVIA – It’s no secret

that central Kane Countyhas its fair share of Mexicanrestaurants.

That said, those whodiscover Taqueria El Sazon,at 8 N. Island Ave. in down-town Batavia, will find it is aworthy addition to the arrayof Mexican food options inthis area. The restaurantrecently opened in the store-front that formerly housedPizza Hut/WingStreet.

The first thing one notic-es is how friendly the waitstaff is. Moments after walk-ing into the restaurant, myco-worker and I were seatedin a booth.

It took a few minutes forus to decide what we wanted.Taqueria El Sazon’s menuhas a number of tantalizingitems, from breakfast to tor-tas, burritos, tacos, fajitasand seafood.

I opted for the Mexi-can sausage torta, and myco-worker ordered the steakburrito. While we waitedfor our entrees to arrive, our waitress brought us agenerous amount of salsa

with chips. The salsa was spicy and

full of flavor, and I eager-ly scooped more on to mychips. I was careful not toruin my appetite by eatingtoo many chips, because Iwanted to fully enjoy myentree.

The Mexican sausagetorta arrived piping hot. Atthe time I ordered it, I didn’teven know what Mexicansausage tasted like, but Idecided to be adventurous.

I wasn’t disappointed. The sausage was spicy butnot too spicy, and every-thing tasted freshly made.

My co-worker was equallyimpressed with his steakburrito, which he thoughtwas filling and tasty. He alsowas impressed with the gen-erous size of the burrito.

I decided to top off themeal with a slice of flan. Theflan was creamy and rich, aperfect end to the meal.

The bill was also a pleas-ant surprise – only $20.16 forthe both of us. So if you’relooking for authentic Mex-ican food that won’t put adent in your wallet, Taque-ria El Sazon is your place.

14 Old Town instructor headed to St. Charles’ House PubBy ERIC SCHELKOPF

[email protected]

He has been called “Chi-cago’s official troubadour.”

Folk singer and songwrit-er Mark Dvorak will per-form at 7 p.m. Sunday, July7, at The House Pub, 16 S.Riverside Ave., St. Charles.Dvorak will perform aspart of The House Pub’sacoustic showcase, hostedby St. Charles resident MikeAlberts since 2010.

Information is availableby calling The House Pub at630-945-3479 or visiting www.thehousepub.com.

Kane County Chroniclereporter Eric Schelkopf hadthe chance to talk to Dvorakabout the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: What shouldpeople expect from the show?

Mark Dvorak: I like to mixit up. I’ll do some originals, but I love old pop songs, likethe things that Fats Wallerused to play, and Gershwin

and stuff like that. And I’ll bring my banjo

along to do some traditionalbanjo tunes.

ES: You’ve taught at theOld Town School of Folk Musicin Chicago for more than 25

years. What made you want tobe a teacher there?

MD: Well, I was a studentat Old Town in the ’80s. Iliked music, like a lot ofyoung people, and friendsof mine were in differentbands, and they were goingto be rock stars and stuff.

I always liked the soundof acoustic instruments, anda friend of mine invited meto join her for a class at OldTown. I liked being there, and I thought, “Maybe I canget good enough and teachhere one day.”

I had actually startedsome classes out here in thesuburbs, and was teach-ing privately in my homeapartment. I was trying togain experience to ask fora teaching job at Old Town, but as it turned out, theycalled me.

I was lucky enough toget in right when the schoolwas in the beginning of itsreemergence. So I was able

to grow as a teacher and as aworking artist as Old Towngrew.

ES: What are the first thingsyou try to teach your stu-dents?

MD: What I try to conveyin all of my classes is thatmusic is fun, music is forfun.

It’s fun to play with oth-ers and sing with others. It’ssuch a basic human activity.

I try to keep everybody’sfeet on the ground.

ES: How did you get in-volved in folk music in the firstplace?

MD: I like the term folk. It’s a very fuzzy term, andthat’s one of the things I likeabout it.

I love traditional songs, but I also love new thingstoo. When I was a kid, JohnDenver, Peter, Paul andMary, and Gordon Lightfootwere on the radio.

Bob Dylan was one of myfavorites, and still [is] one

of my favorites. I discoveredPete Seeger and WoodyGuthrie and Lead Belly, andI felt like I was kind of home, and that music has alwaysbeen the kind of thing Ireturn to.

I’m very comfortable withthis music as an avenue forthe way of expressing my-self. What I loved about folkmusic was the narrative, theinherent storytelling of it.

I feel close to it. A pot-ter works with clay and apainter works with oils andwatercolors. I like to workwith acoustic instruments.

ES: You’ve been called “Chi-cago’s official troubadour.” Doyou take that as an honor?

MD: I sure do. There wasa guy who was a mentor tome, Fred Holstein, that washis nickname too, and beforehim, Winfred “Win” Stracke, the founder of Old Town.

I feel connected to artistswith an enduring spirit. I tryto live up to it.

Johansmeier, who will be ajunior at St. Charles North inthe fall, missed his sophomorebaseball season after sufferinga broken collarbone in a Jan.31 car accident. The early stag-es of his comeback are unfold-ing as Johansmeier competeswith the St. Charles Post 342legion team and with North’ssummer team.

One of the younger mem-bers of the legion team, thediminutive Johansmeier isseeing time at second base anddesignated hitter, although his

right, throwing arm remainsfar from full strength.

Post 342 coach Dale Wilder-spin acknowledges Johans-meier’s physical limitations– even at second base, he’sunable to play both games ofa doubleheader – but Wilder-spin still considers Johans-meier an impressive compet-itor in the mold of his olderbrother, Jake Johansmeier,

who is playing collegiately atEastern Illinois University.

“He’s a battler at the plate,”Wilderspin said. “He very sel-dom gets overwhelmed at theplate. He’ll put the ball in play, and he’s come up with somebig hits when you think he’sgoing to get overwhelmed.”

Johansmeier’s collarbonebroke because of the forceof his seat belt’s reaction to

the accident. He knows theresult of the accident couldhave been much worse, andhe needs to look only at his fa-ther, Jay, for evidence.

Jay Johansmeier was driv-ing Luke home from an off-season, infield workout whentheir Honda Civic hit a vehi-cle that Jay Johansmeier saidpulled out in front of themin a Lisle intersection. Hewas hospitalized for severalweeks after the accident andonly recently has regained hisability to walk normally, andremains unable to be as activeas he would like.

Luke Johansmeier, 16,was released from EdwardHospital the night of the ac-cident but soon realized hismuch-anticipated high schoolbaseball season – he was astrong candidate to make thevarsity team as a sophomore– was in peril. He hoped toat least salvage a slice of hissophomore year but wasn’tcleared to play until just af-ter the North Stars had been

eliminated from the postsea-son.

Grateful as he is now toplay ball, additional patiencewill be required until he feelslike his old self.

“My arm, it hurts when Ithrow,” Johansmeier said.“Because the collarbone isshorter and it it pops outwhenever I throw. ... It takesa few months for it to get backto what it was.”

Until he’s able to throw theway he’s accustomed, Johans-meier is putting higher expec-tations on himself to thrive inother areas.

“I’ve got to work on my hit-ting because my throwing’snot going to be that good, soI’ve got to do [other things] tocompensate for it,” Johans-meier said.

Wilderspin is optimisticthat Johansmeier will emergefrom his recovery back ontrack as a promising infielder.

“He battles through it,”Wilderspin said. “He’s goingto be a good, little player.”

BATAVIA – A group oflocal youth baseball playersshouldn’t have much troublewhipping up a compelling“What I did this summer” es-say once the new school yeararrives.

Several players from theKane County Bronco League13U age group are planninga trip of a lifetime Monday,Aug. 5, to Thursday, Aug. 15,to Taiwan, where they arescheduled to play nine gamesin 10 days against Taiwaneseteams.

“Lots of videos, lots ofpictures,” said Batavia Ban-dits coach Mark Pelley, thetrip’s chief organizer. “A lot

of memories.”On Monday, July 1, play-

ers, coaches, family mem-bers and Batavia Mayor JeffSchielke gathered at Prai-rie-Lathem Park for a kick-off gathering that includedphotos with the boys flankedby a U.S. flag. Pelley said hisunderstanding is this will bethe first U.S. youth baseballteam to make a trip to Tai-wan.

“We’ve been told by theTaiwan people that we arethe first American youthteam to go to Taiwan toplay,” Pelley said. “They’vehad relationships with someKorean teams and some Jap-anese teams, but they’ve nev-er had a U.S. team come visitthem. We’re supposed to be

the first, and they’ve beencoming over here since the’70s.

“The Taiwan Little Leagueguys have been in our [LittleLeague World Series] since Ithink ’77. But this guy that’sin charge of it thinks ‘No,we’ve never had a USA teamexpress interest [in playingin Taiwan].’ So we’re prettyexcited about that.”

The unorthodox tour wasset in motion by connectionsfrom Pelley’s business deal-ings. Pelley, who works inthe hardware industry, saidhe goes to Taiwan about sixtimes a year, and his wife,Sherry, was born there.

Pelley said he was con-ducting business with a manfrom Taiwan a few years ago

when their mutual passionfor baseball came up.

“He introduced me to hisuncle, and he’s in charge ofall of the youth baseball inTaiwan,” Pelley said. “ …

About three years ago whenI started coaching my son inbaseball, I kind of floated theidea, and it’s taken us thislong to get everybody kind ofmoving in that direction.”
