� EGNOS is delivering a free Open Service since October 2009 and a Safety-of-Life Service for aviation since March 2011

� Already 35 approach procedures developed for European airports (France, Germany, UK, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Poland). More planned.

� Why public research in GNSS now?� Safety and Security: Galileo PRS, SoL. Interference

detection and mitigation/spectrum sharing, emergency services (E112, E911)

� Transportation: improve traffic management, ADAS, liability-critical technologies.

� Support to the research community: fundamental research in long-term high-value sectors

� Improve testing facilities for the benefit of the GNSS community (eg SW receiver developments)

� Support trans-national and industry/academia cooperation (grants, NoE…)

� Support economic value creation: standardisation, access to funds for startups, consulting services, etc

� At EC, the principal R&D funding tool is the 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013). In GNSS also others from ESA (EGEP, TRP), national and regional initiatives.
