Worship Focus – Jesus Speaks to Sinners, “Follow Me!” The Church is filled with people who God called out of His boundless mercy. Nothing else could explain the choices that God made! He calls such sinful and weak men and women to fill His Church. Only mercy can explain those He chose in the lessons today: a despised tax collector, an exiled killer, a persecutor of Christians. How meaningful these lessons are, when we remember that each lesson was penned by the unworthy sinner called into service by God’s boundless mercy!

SILENT PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP:

Faithful God, sanctify us as Your people and make us bold to confess You on earth. When this earthly life is ended and we stand before You on high, grant us to hear the Savior’s acknowledgment that we are His and He is ours forever. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

INVOCATION .

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION 1 JOHN 1:8-9

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

THE KYRIE MARK 10:47

ABSOLUTION JOHN 20:21-23

FIRST SCRIPTURE LESSON EXODUS 3:1-15 God calls an exile to follow Him

1 Now Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, a priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 The Angel of the LORD appeared to him in blazing fire from within a bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire, but the bush was not burning up. 3 So he said, “I will go over and look at this amazing sight—to find out why the bush is not burning up.” 4 When the LORD saw that Moses had gone over to take a look, God called to him from the middle of the bush and said, “Moses! Moses!” Moses said, “I am here.” 5 The LORD said, “Do not come any closer. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6 He then said, “I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7 The LORD said, “I have certainly seen the misery of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry for help because of their slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. 8 So I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the

Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 Now indeed, the Israelites’ cry for help has come to me. Yes, I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 Come now, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12 So he said, “I will certainly be with you. This will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain.” 13 But Moses said to God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I say to them?” 14 So God replied to Moses, “I am who I am.” He also said, “You will say this to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” 15 God also told Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered from generation to generation.’

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 119c Christian Worship page 111

Oh, how I love your law!*

I meditate on it all day long.

I have more insight than all my teachers,* for I meditate on your statutes.

I have more understanding than the elders,* for I obey your precepts.

Refrain

I have kept my feet from every evil path* so that I might obey your Word.

I have not departed from your laws,* for you yourself have taught me.

How sweet are your words to my taste,* sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND SCRIPTURE LESSON I TIMOTHY 1:12-17 God calls a former persecutor of Christians to follow Him

12 I give thanks to the one who empowered me, namely, Christ Jesus our Lord, that he treated me as trustworthy, appointing me into his ministry. 13 He did this even though formerly I was a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a violent man. But I was shown mercy, because I acted ignorantly in unbelief. 14 The grace of our Lord overflowed on me along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 This saying is trustworthy and worthy of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,” of whom I am the worst. 16 But I was shown mercy for this reason: that in me, the worst sinner, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his unlimited patience as an example for those who are going to believe in him, resulting in eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, to the immortal, invisible, only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY II Corinthians 5:19

Alleluia. God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them. And he has entrusted to us the message of reconciliation. Alleluia.

GOSPEL MATTHEW 9:9-13

God calls a despised tax collector to follow Him

M: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, chapter 9.

9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s booth. He said to him, “Follow me.” Matthew got up and followed him. 10 As Jesus was reclining at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were actually there too, eating with Jesus and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your

teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “The healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ In fact, I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

M: The Gospel of our Lord.

STATEMENT OF FAITH NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, Eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER MATTHEW 6:9-13

Our Father in Heaven Hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen.

M: The Lord be with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give You thanks, O Lord,

holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in His name, there He is with them to shepherd His flock till He comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise Your holy name and join their glorious song:

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night He was betrayed, took bread; and when He had given thanks,

He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is the new testament in My blood, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

6 Weary am I and heavy laden; With sin my soul is sore oppressed. Receive me graciously and gladden My heart, for I am now your guest. Refrain 7 You here will find a heart most lowly That feels unworthy in your sight, That duly weeps o’er sin, yet solely Your merit pleads, as it is right. Refrain 8 By faith I call your holy table The testament of your deep love, For by your gift I now am able To know the heart of God above. Refrain 9 What higher gift can we inherit? It is faith’s bond and solid base; It is the strength of heart and spirit, The covenant of hope and grace. Refrain 10 This feast is manna, wealth abounding Unto the poor, to weak ones pow’r, To angels joy, to hell confounding, And life for me in death’s dark hour. Refrain

11 Your body, giv’n for me, O Savior, Your blood, which you for me have shed— These are my life and strength forever; By them my hungry soul is fed. Refrain 12 With you, Lord, I am now united; I live in you and you in me. No sorrow fills my soul; delighted, It finds its peace on Calvary. Refrain 13 Who can condemn me now? For surely The Lord is near, who justifies. No hell I fear, and thus securely With Jesus I to heaven rise. Refrain 14 Though death may threaten with disaster, It cannot rob me of my cheer, For he who is of death the master With help and strength is always near. service at an outdoor celebration at St. Peter’s on July 5. Mark your calendars and we hope you can be with us for it.

God Is So good! Two of our St. Peter’s faculty will be married this summer. Let’s shower them with

love through a “bridal gift shower.” Two tables will be placed in the sunroom labeled with the names “Emily & Andy” and “Kelsey & Daniel.” Please join us in showering them with love by bringing a gift anytime this summer and placing it on the tables. Emily and Andy are registered at Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Daniel and Kelsey are registered at Target and Amazon. Thank you in advance for helping us support these lovely young couples.

Ushers’ Schedule The new ushers’ schedule is now available in the ushers’ cabinet in the narthex.

Registering for St. Peter’s Next School Year: Though the early registration date has now

Meditations devotional booklets are available at both church entrances with a suggested donation

of $2.50 to cover our expenses for these devotionals. Thank you.

Inside Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers to help sanitize the church and clean

bathrooms. This is very important. Depending on the volunteers, it can take an hour or two. Can you help keep God's house especially clean for all of us? Contact Kary at the church office for more information or to volunteer. Thank You!

4th weekend of the Month Help We are in need of someone to vacuum and dust the church

prior to services on the 4th weekend of the month. This is usually done by a team of two people. You can ask a friend to join you or we can find another interested individual to help. You can choose when you would like to come in as long as it is completed prior to service on Saturday afternoon. If you are willing to help in this way, please call the church office at 743-4431.

Notes about Confirmation: Confirmation is a custom of the church and not a sacrament. In confirmation, the catechumen (one undergoing a course of preparation) publicly declares that he/she is a Christian who has been baptized and is in communion with Christ and the church. The reception of catechumens to the Lord's Table assumes that ongoing instruction is the way of life for the faithful Christian.

The Rite of Confirmation emphasizes God's work in Baptism, the gift of faith, and the promises of the Lord's Supper.
