The advent of Levi Hogan as the successor to Jim Fisk at the helm of the Chewelah football program begins a new era of Cougar football. Under Hogan’s leadership, the Cougars have made the change from a shotgun spread offensive formation to a double-wing triple-option look. Hogan believes this new offense is better suited for the team because of the size and the number of the current players in the program. This offense forces opposing defenders to make quick decisions, and it is the goal is to lure defenses into making wrong choices. In essence, it is the football version to “Button, button, who’s got the button?” Chewelah fans saw the offense in action against Deer Park and Lakeside at the jamboree and during the lopsided 48-0 win over Bridgeport. The Cougars have all season to perfect it, while opposing teams have only one week of practice to defend against prior to a game. That is what has made this offense successful at smaller schools, like at defending state 4A champion Gonzaga Prep. Sizewise, the Cougars are not as big this year. This is most evident in the offensive line, where Conner Krouse and Dakota Kroiss are the only players with noticeable size. Adam Gray, Isaac Hall, and Robbie Hopkins will have to depend on technique. On the other hand, the Cougars have depth in the skill positions of quarterback, runningback, and receiver. Elan Krausz took over as quarterback late last season, and he is a double-threat at running and throwing the ball. There is a wealth of speed in the backfield with Jensen Holloway, Payton Danly, Dominick Coleman, Nolan Hansen, Kaden Mackowiak, Johnny Larson, Jake George and Jake Jeanneret. This triple- option offense also has the ability to throw the football, as demonstrated in the three touchdown passes thrown against Lakeside in the jamboree. The receiver corps includes Brenden Flanagan, Griffin Stroyan, Owen Baldwin, Sam Smith, and Ryder Robison. On the defensive side of the football, Chewelah retains its three-four alignment from last year, but with a strong reliance on speed, quickness, and aggressiveness. Again, this is due to the lack of size on the team, especially up front in the trenches where Colton Kairns is the lone player over 200 pounds. It is another example of Coach Hogan matching the type of defense to the size and skills of this year’s players. Chewelah’s three-four defense often has a five-two look when the outside linebackers move up close to the line of scrimmage. This will happen on downs where the opponent is expected to run the ball. The season-opening win over undersized, inexperienced, and outnumbered Bridgeport provided little indication of how the Cougars will perform this season. However, it is expected that there will be a dramatic improvement over last year’s 1-9 record. 2016 Fall Sports Program The Independent Chewelah Cougars FOOTBALL Boys of FALL New coach, new season and new hope for the Chewelah Cougars # Player Name 2 Elan Krausz 3 John Larson 4 Jensen Holloway 6 Jake Jeanneret 10 Keanu Buffalo 11 Dominick Coleman 13 Jaron Baldwin 21 Griffin Stroyan 22 Ryder Robison 25 Kaden Mackowiak 26 Jake George 27 Nolan Hansen 36 Brad Larson 42 Keith Justice 46 Skylar Goforth 47 Conner McDougall 48 Owen Baldwin 50 Robbie Hopkins 51 Clancy Eggleston 53 Isaac Hall 55 Conner Krouse 56 Dylan Walser 58 Nils Berger 63 Dakota Kroiss 64 Sam Triplett 65 David R. With the league volleyball season starting a week earlier this year, the Chewelah Cougars did not have any room at the front of their schedule to play any pre-season matches. At the jamboree, the Lady Cougars won four games and lost two. They split games with Colville and Sentinel, and they swept both games against Kettle Falls. “I like having a pre- season jamboree,” said Baker. “It gives me chance to put different combinations of girls on the floor in different situations to see how well they play together.” With less height this year, Baker is focusing her practices on maximizing the team’s quickness and agility. “Our trademarks this season will be serving and scrappy defense,” said Baker. “We have also been working hard on hitting and passing techniques.” To promote teamwork, Coach Baker and her assistants Melissa Church and Maddy Kernan, hosted a team retreat to begin the season and brought in a motivational speaker. “We all want a positive season this year,” said Baker, “so we spent a day in working on goal-setting, commitment, and building team spirit. We want this season to be a positive experience for the girls, and that does not focus primarily on just winning. Baker has divided her players into three teams with 12 on varsity, 12 on junior varsity, and 14 on C squad. The varsity team has six returning girls: state track medalist Kyrstan Miller, Ellie Wharton, Savannah Nupp, Krislyn Koler, last year team MVP Jaelynn Skok, and Elizabeth Chalmers. Also selected to wear varsity uniforms were Andrea Franks, Bailey Smith, Emily Adams, Karalee DeSautel, Elle Carpenter. Baker said that the squad will have to play aggressive defense and execute a varied offense which will keep opponents off-balance. She also believes that perennial powerhouses Freeman and Lakeside will again be the strongest teams in the league. “I anticipate that they will place one and two again,” Baker said. “This year we return to the regional format so we have a chance to earn three sports to state rather than just two.” The Lady Cougars opened their season on Tuesday with a league match against Newport. The appearance of Chewelah Cougar football has made obvious changes for the 2016 gridiron campaign with a new head football coach, a new coaching staff, a new offense, a new restructured defense and new uniforms.

VOLLEYBALL

By Geno LudwigThe Independent Staff

With 40 girls turning out for volleyball this year, the Cougars might be lacking in bus space this year as they try and qualify for the post-season for the third consecutive season.

“Our defining quality is our team’s commitment to each other,” Baker said. “Each player worked hard to bring forward the strengths of her teammates. I think our fans will also see a more spontaneous team as compared to last year. Our players have good instincts and they aren’t afraid to take risks.”

With the smallest enrollment in the NEA League, Chewelah was 4-12 last year. This year the squad has more youth with two freshmen and two sophomores joining the varsity roster.

“We are a bit smaller than last year which will change our strategy for both offenses and defense,” Baker said.

Another big change has been the schedule.

With the league volleyball season starting a week earlier this year, the Chewelah Cougars did not have any room at the front of their schedule to play any pre-season matches. The only opportunity Coach Shirley Baker had to evaluate her players in competition was at last week’s Colville jamboree.

“The regional crossover tournament against the Caribou Trail League was reinstated this year, so our league season had to be moved up a week to make room for it at the end district play,” said Coach Baker.

At the jamboree, the Lady Cougars won four games and lost two. They split games

with Colville and Sentinel, and they swept both games against Kettle Falls.

“I like having a pre-season jamboree,” said Baker. “It gives me chance to put different combinations of girls on the floor in different situations to see how well they play together.”

With less height this year, Baker is focusing her practices on maximizing the team’s quickness and agility.

“Our trademarks this season will be serving and scrappy defense,” said Baker. “We have also been working hard on hitting and passing techniques.”

To promote teamwork, Coach Baker and her assistants Melissa Church and Maddy Kernan, hosted a team retreat to begin the season and brought in a motivational speaker.

“We all want a positive season this year,” said Baker, “so we spent a day in working on goal-setting, commitment, and building team spirit. We want this season to be a positive experience for the girls, and that does not focus primarily on just winning.

Baker has divided her

players into three teams with 12 on varsity, 12 on junior varsity, and 14 on C squad.

Baker said that the squad will have to play aggressive defense and execute a varied offense which will keep opponents off-balance.

She also believes that perennial powerhouses Freeman and Lakeside will again be the strongest teams in the league.

“I anticipate that they will place one and two again,” Baker said. “This year we return to the regional format so we have a chance to earn three sports to state rather than just two.”

The Lady Cougars opened their season on Tuesday with a league match against Newport. This Thursday, they will host Freeman.
