Friday, August 7, 2020 e Post-Signal 7A By J.T. Strasner General Manager Pilot Point Head Coach Mi- chelle Booker enters her first year leading the Lady Cat volleyball program and is excited about the group she’s inherited. Booker served as head soft- ball coach during a previous stint at Pilot Point, which gives her fa- miliarity with her team. “The girls have had really good attitudes,” Booker said. “The up- perclassmen were freshmen or sophomores when I was here be- fore. And even though I wasn’t with them in volleyball, I knew them from softball. So that helps remove what might normally be some awkwardness of getting to know each other. We’re past that and can focus on what we can do as a volleyball team. Building on our strengths and learning how to improve.” Booker’s first roster will fea- ture five seniors, and she said the team will lean on their most expe- rienced players for the 2020 sea- son. Rendy Garrett, Paige Cox, Maiah Morris, Kayli South and Shelby Malone comprise the se- nior class for 2020. “Thinking back, a lot of these seniors played on varsity as freshmen,” Booker said. “And a lot of times when you have that much youth playing significant time, you’re going to struggle. They got better and better and improved from that each year.” Alyssa David is another player who will be featured in a signifi- cant role this year. “She’s not a senior, but she’ll be a big part of our success,” Booker said. “She came to the team and gave them a big boost.” Like all Class 4A and smaller volleyball coaches, Booker was forced to scramble to fill the void of early season tournaments, which were canceled by a Univer- sity Interscholastic League rul- ing late last month. “Coach [James] Ramsey had done a good job with our schedule and had it ready to go,” Booker said. “Then the tournaments got canceled, and we’ve got three straight weekends that we have to fill. All the coaches were scram- bling and reaching out to fill dates. Me being new, I think some of those emails were going else- where and I didn’t get them. It was a struggle, but we were able to get some things filled in. I fi- nally had to tell myself that we’re going to go with what we’ve got and make the best of it.” The 2020 Lady Cat roster does not feature a great deal of height, so Booker said the team will find other strategies for success. “Maiah Morris has mainly played the role of setter in the past, but she’s probably our tall- est player,” Booker said. “We’re going to find some ways to play her on the front row and still take advantage of her other skills. We’ll make adjustments. Some- times height isn’t such a huge ad- vantage because the bigger girls can be a little slower. We can try to speed the game up and move the ball around. We’ve got good hitters, so we’ve got to find the right holes and play a different type of game.” In terms of the district sched- ule, Booker said future scouting will help lend some reconnais- sance. Right now, she’s focused on the team’s improvement and getting their approach down dur- ing the pre-district slate. “I know that we’ve got a cou- ple of new teams to the district,” Booker said. “Boyd has tradition- ally been very successful in the past. In my mind, they’ll be good again. They’ve got a tall girl in the middle coming back. I think Callisburg lost some firepower from last year. Paradise is a new team to the district. But our fo- cus right now is just improve- ment and getting our strategy down. I think by the time the sec- ond round of district rolls around we’ll be able to hopefully expose some weaknesses of other teams.” PUBLIC NOTICES _______________________________________ Lady Cats look to seniors for Booker’s first year Sell it FAST in The Marketplace!
