GO, Make Disciples
18-20 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge:
“God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and
train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by
baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them
in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day
after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20 The Message (MSG)
On Sunday, May 20th three of our young adults will re-affirm their baptism in the
rite of Confirmation. Alexis Bonte, Mikayla Garl and Jeremy Goodman have
completed their preparation and will be confessing their faith and declaring their
intentions to continue in the covenant that God made with them in their holy
baptism. They will publicly proclaim that they promise: to live among God’s
faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord ’s Supper, to
proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all
people, following the example of Jesus and to strive for justice and peace in all
the earth.
Alexis Bonte is an 8th grader at Muhlenberg Middle School. One of her
favorite activities is playing field hockey. She enjoys spending time with friends
and family who keep her happy and motivated. Her fond memories of being a
member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church are seeing and connecting with her
friends.
Mikayla Garl is an 8th grader at Muhlenberg Middle School. One of her
favorite activities is playing field hockey. She enjoys spending time with friends
and family who are there for her when she gets discouraged. She likes all of the
activities we do at Good Shepherd Lutheran church and she especially enjoys the
debates we have had in “Cat Class”.
Jeremy Goodman is an 8th grader at Muhlenberg Middle School. One of
his favorite activities is playing soccer. He enjoys his time on the soccer fields as
well as spending time with his friends and family. Jeremy likes how friendly and
loving the people are at Good Shepherd Lutheran have been to him.
Please pray for our newly confirmed members and offer them your
congratulations when you see them.
Your sister in Chirst,
Pastor Denise

Sunday, May 6th
- This Sunday’s image of the life the risen Christ shares with us is the image
of friendship. We are called to serve others as Jesus came to serve; but for
John’s gospel, the image of servanthood is too hierarchical, too distant, to
capture the essence of life with Christ. Friendship captures the love, the
joy, the deep mutuality of the relationship into which Christ invites us. The
Greeks believed that true friends are willing to die for each other. This is
the mutual love of Christian community commanded by Christ and enabled
by the Spirit.
The readings for today are: Acts 10:44-48 The Spirit poured out on the Gentiles
Psalm 98 Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands. (Ps. 98:4)
1 John 5:1-6 The victory of faith
John 15:9-17 Christ the friend and lover
Sunday, May 13th
– The gospel for Easter’s seventh Sunday is always taken from the long
prayer Jesus prays for his followers in John’s gospel on the night before his
death, and always includes Jesus’ desire that his followers will be one as he
and the Father are one. This oneness is not mere doctrinal agreement or
institutional unity, but mutual abiding, interpenetrating life, mutual love and
joy. This oneness is the work of the Spirit whom we have received but also
await. Come, Holy Spirit!
The readings for today are: Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 Matthias added to the apostles
Psalm 1 The LORD knows the way of the righteous. (Ps. 1:6)
1 John 5:9-13 Life in the Son of God
John 17:6-19 Christ’s prayer for his disciples
Sunday, May 20th
– On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Spirit, through whom and
in whom the people of God are created and re-created. Pentecost
is sometimes called the church’s birthday, but might more
appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the
fullness of baptism. Ezekiel’s vision shows the Spirit resurrecting and
re-creating not just individuals but a whole people. Romans makes it clear
that God is in the process of re-creating the entire cosmos; yet the Spirit is
also at work in the most intimate and personal way, praying in us “with
sighs too deep for words” when we do not know how to pray.
The readings for today are: Acts 2:1-21 Filled with the Spirit to tell God’s deeds
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.
Romans 8:22-27 Praying with the Spirit
John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 Christ sends the Spirit of truth
Sunday, May 27th
– When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who
God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community
within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul’s words today.
When we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate
parental address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God
the same relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him.
The readings for today are: Isaiah 6:1-8 Isaiah’s vision and call
Psalm 29 Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. (Ps. 29:2)
Romans 8:12-17 Living by the Spirit
John 3:1-17 Entering the reign of God through water and the Spirit

Notes from the Council Meeting:
In the new business portion of the meeting –
- A discussion on the hiring of a cleaning service to take care of the church and
school sides of the building resulted in the council’s vote to award a contract to
Kelly’s Kleaning, to start working the first week of May.
- With the resignation of Diane Rothenberger, the positions titled Director of
Kids Corner and Director of Pre School have been merged into one job with the
job description of Director of Children’s Programs. The revised job description
was approved by council.
- A discussion on the appointment of a new Director of Children’s
Programs recommended that Rebecca Watson be named as the Director and was
approved in a vote by the council.
- Three confirmands, Mikayla Garl, Alexis Bonte and Jeremy Goodman, were
recommended to the council for membership; council approved their membership
through confirmation on May 20th
.
- Cathy Meck, Elizabeth Bennis, Paula Kline, and Betty Kline, request to be
received as new members. Recommendation to accept these people into the church
membership as of April 29th
was approved by the council.
- A Fall fundraiser was approved by the council. This activity will again be the
led by Barbara Greth with funds to support the work of Good Shepherd Church.
Finance Report
General Fund - Finances reported as of March 31st showed an income of
$15,924.15 with expenditures of $17,050.73 leaving the fund a
shortage of -$1,126.58. Year to date the general fund had an
income of $43,648.83 with expenses being $59,869.87 leaving
a deficit of -$16,221.04.
Line of Credit From January to March 2018, $13,360.32 had been borrowed,
$6,000.00 of which was taken out in March to pay the bills. No
money has been repaid to the account. April Estimates project
finances to show a deficit of $569.00, which would require us
to borrow again from the line of credit.
Mortgage payments Thus far this year have totaled $12,945.00 with contributions
totaling $13,348.00.
As a reminder to the congregation, April had five (5) Sundays that included Easter
(historically a strong day) making April appear to be close to financially good, or at
least, less negative.
The above information leads council to take action to inform the congregation of this
situation. The council believes another special program is needed to reduce the deficit before
the end of the year.
SUMMER SERVICES
Beginning on Sunday June 3rd
. The time for the service will be changed to 9:30 AM, which
will mean that the 8:15 AM communion services on the first Sundays will be discontinued for
Summer. Also we will be using the 10th
setting for the service during June, July and August.

Blessed to Be a Blessing Stewardship Campaign
Genesis 12:2b: I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will
be a blessing.
Thank-you to all who participated in our 2018 campaign. We hope the approach helped you think about all God has done for you, and then in turn think about your response to God’s love and riches given to you. If you missed the opportunity to turn in an “Estimate of Giving” card, you may get one at church (check with Dale Nelson or Rick Rothenberger), or you may go to our website: https://www.goodshepherdelc.org and click on the button “YourGivingEstimate” on the right side below the church picture. It will take you to a form to fill out with your estimate.
Do we live as if we trust God? Especially at Easter time we are reminded of Jesus dying as atonement for us, and rising to show us the promise of eternal life with Him. Do we live with thankfulness for what He has done and show gratitude for what He has done? God showed us His love while we were still sinful and self-serving. Thank God with your actions, not just your head knowledge.
Eugene Burkhart Memorial Educational Scholarship
If you are a senior in High School, you may apply for this scholarship. Some of the
requirements are: you must be a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, proof of
enrollment in higher education & an essay. Applications for graduating high school seniors
are available on the round table in the Gathering Area. Completed applications are due on
or before May 13 and are to be returned to Pastor Denise. The awarding of the Scholarships
will take place during worship on June 6, 2018.
Worship And Music Notes
The Altar Guild needs you. We are looking for more members for our Altar Guild.
Members set up the sanctuary for services (usually on a Friday or Saturday) and clean
up after the service. The procedures are well documented and you will work with
existing members to learn them. The time required is 1 to 2 hours about once a month.
With enough new members, an individual would need to serve less frequently. Contact
Betty Ledig at [email protected] for more information.

Rethinking what it means to be Church today!
Join in the conversation on the second Tuesday of the month to help us rethink what it
means to be Church today. Our next meeting will be on May 8th
from 7:00 -7:45 PM.
On April 10, 2018, members of the congregation engaged in conversation in response to the
7th
chapter of Kelly Fryer’s book Reclaiming the “C” word: Daring to be Church
Again. Below are some quotes from the book and members reflections. Thanks to all who
participated.
Daring to be Surprised
Chapter 7
They will celebrate every surprising disaster because it means that someone tried to make
something happen …someone dared to dream and then someone dared to do it. (p.91)
Reflections:
What are things that we have dreamed to do that did not work out?
Did we celebrate, if not how did we respond?
Pre-School/KidsKorner/Camp Sunday – keep trying and adjusting – blended
with VBS
Contemporary Service – keep trying
Failure teaches us things – need to find the lessons
Multi-ministry room for Senior Daycare – found out the regulations put it
beyond our reach
When the Holy Spirit showed up in the life of that early church, something new
happened. (p.92)
Reflections:
The Holy Spirit is here at Good Shepherd; what do you believe the Holy Spirit
is nudging us to do?
Change – dream about it
Get involved in ministries such as Camp Noah
Puppet Ministry
Deepening our relationships both within the church and with the community
Be challenged and don’t be afraid to do new things
To move forward despite our financial problems.
Keep moving forward – working on living God’s word and things will work out
Be a community in here
Bringing in new members
Get involved in WBMD ministries such as Camp Noah
What does it mean [for us] to stand on grace (p.96)
Try without fear of failure
Be encouraging to those who try new things
It’s okay to fail – Jesus is there to pick us up
Don’t be fearful, be willing to do things you have never done before – ex. New
committee, take a new responsibility with the church
To be willing to take a chance
To have the faith in the Holy Spirit that “IF” we make a mistake – at least we
tried and will be forgiven
Our faith leads us with grace and GOD’s abundance
6
What are we afraid of? (p.97)
Failure
We are afraid of failure so we are fearful to be adventurous
Rejection
Criticism
Finances - Not having enough money.
Change
What is the worst that could happen … And is that so bad?
For some people, moving forward even a little may be too much
JINGLE OFFERING FOR MAY The Jingle Offering for May will be received on May 20
th. The recipient
this month will be our Prayer Shawl Ministry to help defray with the cost
of yarn. Please be as generous as possible when the bucket comes your way. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who purchased Easter candy from the youth. We sold 319 pounds
of candy. Because of your support as well as our committee, our preschool and Kid’s Korner
families we were able to have a profit of $2132.24. This will definitely help us to continue
our ministry with the youth of our church without having to have any of our events funded by
the church.
I would personally like to thank Alexis Garl for her awesome tie lap blanket idea. We were
able to make 18 tie lap blankets for the shut-in members of our congregation. A special thank
you to Kathy Bobeck as well for picking out some great patterns for us and helping us with
this project through her employment at Jo Ann Fabrics. We had a great work crew also to
make these blankets. Thank you to Cathy Meck, Susan, Dollie and Lizzy Monroe, Heather,
Joe, Alexis and Mikayla Garl and Pastor Denise. A great deal of love went into making these
blankets as well as laughs. On Sunday April 22nd
Pastor Denise had Alexis and Dollie read a
beautiful prayer to bless each of our blankets. Each member of the congregation that Sunday
joined in laying hands and sealing each of the blankets with the sign of the cross. The youth
will be delivering these blankets in the very near future.
A small group of us also traveled to Fairgrounds Cinema on Sunday April 22nd
and enjoyed
the movie “The Miracle Season”. This was a fantastic movie. We enjoyed laughing and
crying together. Some of us cried more than others (Joe). HA HA HA! Hey if you can’t
laugh and cry with your church family who can you laugh and cry with!

baby girl!
Our new friends from Nigeria, the Johnson-Agiri family is expecting a baby at the end of May! The folks at Advent Lutheran Church have graciously offered to host a post-baby shower on Saturday, June 23rd from 1:00-3:00.
Stop in to meet the family and enjoy some light refreshments. If you’d like to bring a gift, we are encouraging gift cards or cash so they can purchase what they need as they need it. They have already been given a lot of second-hand
items which has been terrific!
They are so grateful for your caring support!
