A FAMILY AFFAIRAndrews was certainly the name oneverybody’s lips at Horseheath’sThurlow fixture on Saturday, assiblings Gina, Bridget and Jack madetheir respective ways to the winner’senclosure to complete an historicfamily treble.Jack, the youngest of the trio at just16, got the ball rolling in the openingrace aboard Heads Or Tails, in turnrecording his first career winner. It wasa very accomplished ride from a jockeywith little racing experience under hisbelt and this can only be the first ofmany. The bang in-form Bridget then got inon the act in the very next race, partnering See You Jack to victory toregister an astonishing fifth win on thebounce. Gina then completed the featin the penultimate Restricted race onRemarkable Man; the pair followed uptheir win at the course a fortnightpreviously.

In between the Andrews’ domination,Sheila Crow saddled the first of hertwo Open winners across the weekendas the highly promising Mr Mercurialmade a smooth transition to the gradeunder a perfectly timed ride fromPaddy Gerety.

Stablemate Fruit Fayre, again riddenby Gerety, capped off an excellentweekend for the Crow team by makinga winning seasonal debut at Garnonsthe following day, extending hersequence of success to seven betweenthe flags.

There aren’t many weekends that goby when Will Biddick doesn’t get amention and last weekend was nodifferent. The defending GentlemenRiders champion continued hisscintillating form with five winnersover the weekend.

Fresh from a fantastic four-timer,Biddick fired in a treble at BishopsCourt’s East Devon meeting on

Saturday, before following up with adouble at the Quantock Staghoundsmeeting at Cothelstone twenty-fourhours later.

Elsewhere, Francesca Nimmo saddledher first training double at theBrocklesby at Brocklesby Park.Nimmo was aboard Magic Sky in theLadies Open to secure the first leg ofthe feat, before Harry Bannistersteered the well-backed FortunataFashions to victory in the Jockey ClubOpen Mares Maiden.

Tom Hamilton also recorded a doubleon Sunday thanks to wins aboardWayupinthesky (Mens Open) and TheGotfor Man (OpenMaiden 8yo+) atthe Tynedalemeeting atCorbridge.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUDate of birth: 27/05/83.Job or profession: NFU MutualAgent/Group Secretary. Are you from a racing background? If not, how did you get started inPoint-to-Pointing? My Family havebeen involved in Hunting and Point-to-Pointing for many years now and asearly as I can remember it is somethingthat has been part of my life. What was your first ride in public? My first ride in public was on Spot onMillie, a five-year-old filly owned by myuncle.First winner – name of the horse, owner & trainer, the date & thecourse: My first winner was on MeccaPrince, owned and trained by myGrandfather, John, he ran in the seconddivision of the maiden (Spot on Millieran in the first) at Erw Lon in February2000.Apart from the first winner, whathas been your most memorableride? I’ve been very lucky and riddensome nice horses through my careerbut winning the Kim Muir/FulkeWalwyn at the Cheltenham Festival onHigh Chimes was very special. Is there a ride you look back on andthink “could have done better?” Isuspect like so many jockeys there are ahuge number of rides that if I reallystudied I could of done better on, butwe’re all human and if you learn fromyour mistakes that’s the main thing. For which trainers/owners do youmainly ride? I mainly ride for AlanHill in Oxford and my cousin JonathenTudor when at home in Wales.Who has been most influential onyour riding career so far? I’ve beenvery lucky in that a number of peoplehave really helped me throughout mycareer. I started riding out for EvanWilliams from the age of 15 and so histhoughts and ways have influenced megreatly, following on from that when Iwent to university in Reading I startedto ride out for Alan and Lawney Hilland they have been a huge support andinfluence on the vast majority of mytime in the saddle. It would also bewrong of me not to mention myparents Ann and Will who have been

huge supporters throughout my careerand have always been on hand withpositive criticism.Which are your favourite courses, and for what reasons? My Favouritecourses are Kingston Blount andCheltenham. Kingston Blount issituated only a few miles from Alan’syard and as a result he runs a lot ofhorses there, consequently it’s where Ihave ridden a lot of my winners. Wehave had some great days there and it’sa course I feel I have really got toknow. It’s not a straight forward courseand course knowledge can be decisivewhich is something I really enjoy as itencourages you to really think and planyour race. I really enjoy Cheltenhampartly because of its idiosyncrasies butmainly because its our Wembley. It’swhere the best in our sport go toperform on the big stage and to play asmall part in that and having beenlucky enough to ridden winners aroundthere is something that is very special. What car do you drive? I currentlydrive a Saab.Name your perfect night in andperfect night out: I’ve recently gotmarried so if I don’t say my perfectnight in is with Hannah, in frontof the fire with a good filmand a bottle of wine, I thinkit could go down as one ofthe shortest marriages inhistory! My perfect night out,I’m getting old I think, but Ireally enjoy a good evening in alocal pub with all our mates.Maybe for some food and a goodfew drinks to follow!Where do you like to goon holiday? I love a skiingholiday so anywhere wecan get onto the slopesand have some fun. TheFrench alps are easy toget to and as good asanywhere for me.Who would be yourideal travellingcompanions to theraces? I’m not thechattiest on the wayto the races and tend

to drift off into my own world so tospare anyone else my grumpiness Ithink Maude our whippet is as ideal acompanion as any. What music are you currentlylistening to? I enjoy music, but I’m nothugely into any one band so anythingthat pops up on the radio is generallypretty ok with me.What are your favourite films andTV programmes? My favourite filmsare probably Shawshank Redemptionand A Time To Kill. I feel I have towatch them when they come on the TVregardless of the time they come onand even though I’ve seen them bothhundreds of times. I also really enjoyspy type programmes. I used to loveSpooks and Hannah and I arecurrently working our way throughHomeland. What has been either your ownfunniest incident, or the mostamusing thing you have seen orheard at the races? I didn’t find thisparticularly amusing but plenty ofpeople did. I was supposed to ride afilly for Mike Spuffard at Erw Lon backin 2002. When I got onto the filly in

the paddock she wasbehaving pretty badly

and kept planting withme. We did the usualgetting off andgetting on her move, and me beinglegged up on themove, but nothingwas really working.

JAMES TUDORA proud Welshman, with a rich family tradition in the sport, James has been involved in Pointing all of his life. His

victories at Cheltenham are dear to his heart, but a win over the National fences would complete his riding CV nicely.

Page 9: Go Pointing | 03 March 2015

had taken the filly out of the paddockand were trying to get her going on theway to post. Mike legged me up and thefilly planted once again. I had begun tolose my temper and gave her aparticularly big kick in the ribs, with thisshe suddenly plunged forward pullingagainst my hands and to my dismayboth reins snapped leaving me withnothing to pull against!! Needless tosay I baled out before she could buildup a head of steam!! Mike undeterredcaught her after a time, got her to thestart and borrowed the huntsman’sbridle to use in the race! Unfortunately,or fortunately depending on who youwere, she refused to jump off! I wouldbe lying if I said I wasn’t slightlyrelieved!Who are your biggest heroes inracing? I don’t really have any racingheroes but I do admire professionaljockeys. It’s a very tough game in whichto make a living and those lads thatstick at it and make a success of itdeserve the utmost respect.Which particular horse (in anydiscipline) would you like to ride?I’ve never really hankered after the rideof any horse in a different disciplinebut I would enjoy a days hunting on ahorse that can really operate and whoknows his job.

Apart from race-riding, in whatother sports do you participate? I’vealready mentioned skiing and, being aWelshman, Rugby is pretty close to myheart. I also enjoy a days shooting orhunting.Do you have any regrets in yourriding career to date? I have noregrets. I’ve been very lucky so far andhad some really enjoyable moments inthe saddle. What ambitions do you have inracing? I don’t have any majorambitions left but I suppose if youpined me down riding a winner overthe national fences would be somethingI’d like on my CV.Are there any changes that youthink would benefit the sport in thefuture? I would like to see the prizemoney situation addressed. I don’t seewhy there is a ceiling on the amount ofprize money on offer. I appreciate thatnot all hunts can afford to offer moreprize money but for those that can orwould like to, I think they should beallowed to carry on. Prize money hasnot really altered in all the time that Ihave been involved in Point-to-Pointingand I feel that in a time of increasingcosts and competition from thenational hunt scene, along with fallingnumbers of horses running in points,

an increase in the amount of prizemoney on offer may just help to bringback some of the owners that we havelost. What are your aspirations for theseason? My aspirations are to ride asmany winners as possible and to stay inone piece. Can you give us a horse to look outfor this season? Brians Well impressedme when winning his maiden and, as isso often the case, we learnt an awful lotabout him when we got beaten firsttime out; I hope he can go on to winmore races. Repeat Business is a horsethat we have always thought a bit ofand again I think there should be racesin him once he makes his appearance. Can you give us an up and comingrider to look out for this season? JackAndrews, who I have ridden againstthis year, has the pedigree to go a longway, and Peter Bryan is a young riderwith all the right credentials. I’m surehis uncle, Peter Bowen, and cousin,Sean Bowen, will pass him on plenty oftips! If you were on an island and couldonly bring three things, what wouldyou bring? A boat, plenty of lager, anda fishing rod!And finally, sum up Point-to-Pointing in one word: Crazy.

For how long have you beentraining? This is my first season training.

Where are you based?I am based in Redmarley,Gloucestershire.

Do you combine training withanother job or profession? No, training pointers and pre-trainersis my full time job.

What training facilities do you haveavailable? We have a 10 box yard (with room toexpand) with a horse walker and usethe grass banks on the family farmwhere it is very sandy soil and luckilydrains very well.

How many horses do you train?I currently have seven pointers in andtwo pre-trainers.

Do you train for just yourself andfamily or for other Owners?I have Noble Ben, who my motherowns, and a four-year-old by Overburythat I own with my mother. Themajority of my pointers are owned byAlastair and Pippa McLeish, who arebig supporters of mine and have reallyhelped me get going – I couldn't askfor better owners.

Are you from a racing background? My mum and dad trained pointers inthe 80s and 90s and my uncle, RobertChapman, was a professional NationalHunt jockey. I have ridden/beenaround horses all my life.

What was the first winner you sentout – name, owner, rider, date, course?I haven't trained a winner yet - I havehad two seconds to date (includingSchindler’s Prince – see below).

Of which horse performance areyou most proud? So far, it would have to be Schindler’sPrince finishing second to Say No (byjust over a length) in the Lord Ashtonof Hyde’s Cup at Cocklebarrow.

Did you race-ride before youstarted training?Yes, and still do, although I try to be abit more selective on what I ridenowadays.

How did you start training and whohas been most influential on yourtraining career?

Since we moved to Redmarley overtwo years ago, my mother trainedpointers here. I took over the reins thisyear, although she still has a big inputand is on the yard every day if ever Ineed any help. I also learned a lotwhen I worked for Richard Barber forthree seasons and I spent a summer inSaratoga and Belmont (New York),which was a big eye-opener.

Which jockeys do you useregularly?I ride most of the horses myself still, and use Joe Drinkwater as a NoviceRider.

What car do you drive?Audi A3.

What kind of music do you like?I like most music but, morespecifically, Avicii and One Republic.

What are your favourite films andTV programmes?I'm a big fan of the Taken films andenjoy watching pro bull riding.

Describe your perfect night in andperfect night out:Night in would be a Chinese withsome good television on; night outwould be down the local pub withgood company.

What do you do to take a breakfrom training – any hobbies orfavourite holiday destinations?I don’t tend to get too many holidaysas we’re usually busy in the summerwith breakers and pre-trainers , butwhen I can get away anywhere hotwith a pool and I'm happy!

Who would be your ideal travellingcompanions to the races?Clifford Rawlings comes to mostPoint-to-Points with me, which is a bighelp as he knows every short cut, andI’d better say the girlfriend - although Ican’t get her to drive as often as I’dlike!

Who are your biggest heroes – in orout of racing?Julian Pritchard was my hero growingup and has helped me through mycareer.

What has been your funniestincident at the races? There isn't really a stand out moment, but Nick Williams and Sam

Drinkwater are good fun to rideagainst and we have a laugh.Which particular horse would you liketo train – in Points and under Rules?I'm very fond of Kings Palace andcertainly wouldn’t say no to traininghim.

If you hadn’t taken up training, what would you have done instead?Whatever it would have been, it morethan likely would have involved horses!

Which horses do you have at themoment that you would say havegood potential?Schindler’s Prince still has a lot moreto show on the right ground over theright distance, and I also have two nicefour-year-olds that are showing a goodattitude and ability at home.

What ambitions do you have inracing? To ride and train as many winners aspossible, and I would love to be ableto produce some young horses thatwould go on to do bigger things underRules.

What are your favourite coursesand meetings - and why?Maisemore is my favourite course, mainly because it has always been mylocal course and also because I've hadquite a bit of success there.

What do you consider to be thebiggest challenges for Point-to-Point trainers?Trying to attract owners to a sport thatprovides very little - if any - financialreturn.

What are your opinions on thechanges in Point-to-Pointing inrecent years? There have been some great changesrecently, such as rider sponsorship andhorse sponsorship; the new DBSPoint-to-Point Bumper Final atAintree is a fantastic idea as well.

What developments do you thinkwould benefit the sport in thefuture? It would make life easier for trainersand owners if all entries could be donethrough The Point-to-Point RacingCompany. Also I think it would help ifthey could bring in open/novice ridershandicap Point-to-Points, giving morehorses more chances to win races.

It would have been a surprise hadTabitha decided against riding inPoint-to-Points, although she herselfadmits that had it not been for PonyRacing she might have stuck witheventing, a discipline she successfullypursues in the summer.

Her mother, Georgina Howell, hasalways had Pointers, and Tabithastarted riding out at the age of ten.She had a very successful Pony Racingcareer, and in 2008 she and her elderbrother Hector both qualified for thefinal of the Charles Owen series atAintree, achieving the distinction offinishing first and second.Unfortunately for Tabitha, who hadthe choice of mount, she picked thewrong one, and it was Hector whopassed the post in front.

“I’d still make the same choice today, though,” she stressed, addinglaughingly “I don’t let him get on myhorses now!”

The siblings are unlikely to clash thisyear, with Tabitha mainly riding in theSouth East and Hector in Wales. Hisintended 2015 ride, Barrafohona, is

out for the season, so he will now relyon Always A Chance – the pairactually ran in the same race in Irelandin May. Hector, who is at OxfordBrookes University, is a very goodpolo player, and excels in bringing onyoung horses to sell on.

Tabitha’s first ride between the flags, just after her sixteenth birthday, was in2011 on Alrafid at Horseheath, whereshe was last of five to complete in theLadies’ Open, and it was the 12-year-old who provided her initial success atAldington later in the campaign.

Last season turned out to be her mostsuccessful to date, despite breaking hercollarbone, which required pinning, atCharing. The injury cost her a fewrides, but she returned six weeks laterto record her first double, onShropshirelass and Sitting Back atWhitfield. She has recently been seento advantage when partnering thelatter under Rules, twice finishingsecond over fences.

Tabitha is in her first year at theUniversity of Birmingham readingSports and Exercise Science. A former

junior county hockey player forSussex, she now plays for UOB, whichis the top University team in thecountry. Her fitness levels are not indoubt, as not only does she train everyday, but she also rides out whenevershe can for Ian Williams.

She is willing to travel anywhere toschool, and regularly journeys intoWales – “It’s only a couple of hours” –to ride out for Andrew Quick andJonathan Tudor, while she goes toDavid Phelan when she is at home. She has recently had to replace hertrusty Yaris, which was written offwhen someone drove into her, withthe same model, which unsurprisinglywill be expected to cover at least35,000 miles in the next two years.

Like her brother, she enjoys producingyoung horses, and running a pre-training yard could be a future option. Her current ambition is to ride at leastsix winners this season, and “I’d loveto win the Ladies’ and Novice titles inthe South East.”

SCENE & HEARDLeicester - 24 February by Carolyn Tanner

LEICESTERSHIRE HUNTERS’CHASEIt was the result the Point-to-Pointworld wanted, and the tears shed byjockey Claire Hart as Palypso DeCreek, the apple of Jill Dawson's eye, passed the post in front spokevolumes.

It was just six days previously that Jilllost her brave battle against cancer [seeObituary, February 20]. For the lastfew weeks the 12-year-old's traininghas been taken over by Jill's husband

Mike, who has always been an integralpart of the operation, and who waspresent to welcome his charge into thewinner's enclosure to heartfeltapplause and no little emotion. "Idon't ride him - he's too lively for me,"he smiled. "I ride all the others, but Ileave him to Kerry [Wakefield] andAnna [Stewart]."

The French-bred had shown hisimpatience to get moving by kickingout in the saddling box and pullingfaces while being tacked up, both

characteristic traits. Jill had alwaysdescribed him as "foul in the stable, and free with his back legs!"

Prior to being sold to the Dawsons,Palypso was trained for Alan Halsallby Claire, who has kept the ride sinceJill's hope of making a comeback in2013 failed to come to fruition. It wasthe eighteenth success for thepartnership, although the rider, whoadmitted "He makes me work hard,"found it necessary on this occasion toverbally encourage her mount, who

"Jill always wanted to win a big one,and this was it," Claire added, referringto the £7,000 plus on offer to thewinner, making it the fifth mostvaluable Hunters' Chase in thecalendar, behind Cheltenham, Aintree, and the two championship races atStratford.

SQUIRE OSBALDESTONHANDICAP CHASEIt was a red letter day for FoundrySquare's trainer Steve Flook, who hadearlier saddled Brian Mould's GentleGeorge to win the day's openingcontest. It was Steve's first runner witha full licence, and the emotion heshowed after the race showed just howmuch it meant.

"Make every post a winning one,"Steve had instructed Ben Poste, whocarried out the order to the letter. "Allhe does is stay - he can't quicken buthe keeps galloping," commentedSteve, who had had a long wait for his

licence, which unfortunately had notbeen granted in time for him to beable to enter the giant 12-year-old inthe Grand National, "but I'm hopinghe'll get into the Midlands National."

Steve has 14 jumpers to run underRules, the same number as he alwaystrained between the flags - "That'show I like it - I don't want any more,"- but he also has four for the flat, whowill be coming into work shortly.

"Steve was very good to me when Iwas riding as an amateur, but I've beenwanting to ride him [Gentle George]for years," grinned Ben, who describedthe opportunity as "a real privilege,"and whose chance had come throughbeing in the right place at the righttime, namely on Richard Lee's gallops."I was in the car park waiting toschool another horse when Steveturned up on Gentle George and saidI might as well give him a spin while Iwas waiting," Ben explained. "Ithought nothing of it but a week laterhe rang up and asked me to ride him ifRichard Johnson couldn't."

It was a day to remember for Ben, forwhom it was a fortieth success, and hisclaim is thus reduced to 3lbs.

COTTESMORE MAIDENHUNTERS' CHASEAs expected, this was an easy victoryfor the lightly-raced Woodview Prince, having only his ninth outing at the ageof ten due to what owner RichardHewitt described as "lots of nigglinginjuries," but the favourite's untidyjump at the last persuaded Tom Davidto give him a couple of cracks on therun-in. "If I hadn't kept him goinghe'd have stopped because he was verytired," explained Tom, who was givena two day holiday by the stewards forhitting a horse which was clearlywinning.

"The ground didn't suit him but he'sgot away with it," continued Tom."He'll be better on decent going."

"We've got nothing that can go withhim at home," enthused trainer JoeO'Shea, "so when he's off the bridlehe doesn't know what to do."

Woodview Prince's main target isStratford's pointtopoint.co.uk JohnCorbet Cup, after which it is intendedto send him to Richard Ford forsummer jumping.

A horse with a suspect attitude and afirst-time rider would not appear to bethe ideal cocktail for a competitiveMaiden race at a Point-to-Point. But atthe recent Midlands Area Clubmeeting, 25-year-old Billy Aprahamianand Endofdiscusion proved that a truenovice, in all senses of the word, couldtake on more experienced rivals andfulfil a dream.

“Billy had played a bit of polo, but hadnever jumped a Point-to-Point fencebefore he came to us,” explained DougHarkin, husband of Endofdiscusion’strainer Pauline Harkin. “He’s from afarming family, but has no backgroundin racing – in fact, he’d never evenbeen outside the beer tent at a Point-to-Point until he came with us toBrocklesby Park a week before his firstride.”

“The horse used to be trained by PaulWebber. I’d had my eye on him foryears,” Doug added “and I knew theAprahamians were looking for aschoolmaster for Billy. Endofdiscusion

had ‘a bit of a leg’ so Paul sent him tothem for rehab before he came here togo pointing.”

Pauline and Doug were so concernedabout the combination that theyengaged the Yogi Breisner to teachBilly and Endofdiscusion to jump.“Yogi came down on the Mondaybefore the race,” continued Doug.“Billy couldn’t even jump a flight ofhurdles – he and the horse wereschooling appallingly”. But the mastertutor obviously managed to cast hismagic, as the inexperienced pair wereready to race together for the first timejust six days later.

Billy was introduced to the etiquette ofrace riding by Pauline and Doug’sstable jockey Pete Mann. But it didn’tall go to plan. “It was hilarious,”chuckles Doug again. “When he got tothe start, he couldn’t pull his gogglesdown properly. Then he dropped hisreins. The other jockeys were in fits.”

Until the race got underway, that is.Pre-race instructions were limited to

30 seconds in the paddock because,“We assumed he’d fall off by thesecond fence,” was Doug’s cheekysummary. Pauline kept it simple: “Geta good start, follow Sheila Crow’shorse, and when you jump the ditchfor the last time, just go for home.”

Billy followed those instructions to atee. He overcame all the obstacles –including 19 daunting fences in thethree mile race – and showed calmnessin a close finish to win cosily by a neckfrom the favourite, the well-bred FirstFruit ridden by Paddy Gerety.

Doug’s post-race verdict? “Beneaththe humour, Billy is a very serious andcompetitive person. He doesn’t havean ounce of fear.” But let’s let thewinning debutant have the last word. While Billy has just been accepted formilitary training at Sandhurst, he wasin no doubt about how this victorycompared: “Quite simply, it was thegreatest day of my life!”

TRAINER TALKPETER & JENNIFER MASONThe name Mason is one of the best known and longest standing inSouth Midlands Point-to-Pointing writes Jake Exelby

Photo: Caroline Exelby

Page 21: Go Pointing | 03 March 2015

#gopointing 21 www.pointtopoint.co.uk

My own first memories of the sportare of attending the VWH meeting asa teenager and watching the famousyellow and blue colours being carriedto victory in numerous races.

Peter and Jennifer, who train at ManorFarm in the beautiful Cotswold villageof Ablington, are the latest to carrythe Mason name to success, as owners, trainers and riders. I asked Peter torecall his early days: “My grandfathertrained and my father Alex rode, including under Rules, as well astraining Point-to-Pointers. My first ridewas Perryman for Susie Goess-Saurauat Barbury Castle in January 2003 andmy first winner was Master Grass formy late father at Dunthrop later thatsame month.”

Peter then branched out from home togo and work for Richard Kelvin-Hughes and Ben Tulloch, explaining:“The best horse I rode there was RunFor Moor, he was so gifted.” He thenset up as a trainer himself in 2008,back at Manor Farm. His first runnerwas the talented but temperamentalBeat The Bandits and his first winnerwas Milesian King at Lockinge onEaster Monday, ridden by youngerbrother Richard.

So, was there any sibling rivalrybetween the two Mason brothers?“Only in the VWH Members Race atSiddington,” said Peter with a smile.“He won it twice, both times onAlpheus and I’ve only won it once sofar, with Port Talbot.” The latter, whowent on to win a Hunter Chase atNewton Abbot, holds a special placein the affections of the Masons. “Isold him to Peter,” explains Jennifer.“We’d met before, but that’s how wereally got to know each other.” Thesale obviously worked out well, asthey’ve been married since 2010 andhave an 18-month old daughter, Molly.

Jennifer’s background is also withhorses, but mostly in eventing. She hada few rides in Point-to-Points, beingplaced on Shannon Springs, but as shesays honestly: “I enjoyed it but I foundit hard to mix the eventing withPointing and when I do something, Iwant to do it properly – my mainfocus was wanting to train racehorses.”She is now licensed as a National Hunttrainer, in a separate yard from herhusband’s at Manor Farm, with a smallyard of mostly young horses.

Her best-known horse is Shy John, aclose second at Ludlow recently andformerly trained by Peter to win fivePoint-to-Points and two HunterChases. He explained the secret of hissuccess with a horse who was onceregarded as quirky but became goodenough to finish close-up in theCheltenham Foxhunters. “He’s veryeasy to train, just quite headstrong in arace and we learnt to drop him out sohe would switch off.” Shy John has astrong Mason family connection, being the last horse bred by fatherAlex and a son of Shy Lizzie, onwhom Peter won a Maiden in 2004.

The current flagship bearer for theyard is Icthec (pronounced “I see thesea”), who won a Maiden at BlackForest Lodge first time out then dead-heated in a competitive Restricted withthe progressive Jepeck before finishingsecond to the useful Tiger Rag in anIntermediate. “He tweaked his back inhis last race, but is over that now,”confirmed Peter. “We’ve no immediateplans for him but may run him in theIntermediate Final at Cheltenham inMay.”

Peter also trains Time for Spring forGavin McEchern, owner of thebrilliant former chaser Young Hustler.“He came to us from CharlieLongsdon,” explains his new trainerand ‘took some time to come right.’But he’s done nothing wrong this yearand has already finished second twice, behind the useful Quinz and DoubleBank. Also in the yard are 2014Maiden winner Kilcrea Mill, who willbe ridden by novice Jamie Brace, and2014 Restricted winner You Too Pet,as well as some promising unracedyoungsters. “We’ve got 8 or 9 in at themoment,” laughs Peter, “although wecould always do with more!”

Of course, we mustn’t forget that aswell as farming 700 acres of arableand cattle which he took over fromfather Alex, training and acting asClerk of the Course at Siddington forthe VWH Point-to-Point, Peter alsorides most of his own horses! So howdoes he balance such a busy life?“Race day is almost the easiest part!”he admits. “It’s the daily galloping andschooling that takes up most of thetime. As a result, I don’t take manyoutside rides. Jennifer, Jamie Brace andI manage the horses and Bella Lowes

comes in to ride out two lots aday.”Manor Farm has a one-mile grassgallop through the valleys aroundAblington, as well as a schoolingground and outdoor arena withshowjumps, and they have access tonearby all-weather facilities if needed.

Unsurprisingly for a couple steeped inhorses, Peter and Jennifer have strongopinions on the sport. I ask theirviews on the current debatesurrounding high-class formerNational Hunt horses running inHunter Chasers and Point-to-Points.Jennifer is particularly forthright: “Ithink it’s good for Point-to-Pointing,as it keeps the level high and if toomany high-class horses are running, the fault lies with the rules. What doyou do with horses that are stillhandicapped too high to win NationalHunt races? In eventing, there aremore restrictions, but it’s tricky to getthe guidelines right. It’s great to keepthe older horses doing what they love, but we should have some special racesfor horses who have won a certainamount of prize money. Racegoerslike to see familiar horses and extraraces”

Peter continues in similar vein. “It’sreally hard to frame races. For theVWH Hunt Members Race, wewanted to give novice riders anallowance (like they do in professionalracing), but were told that we couldn't,although we could give experiencedriders a penalty! Surely, for our ownrace, we should be allowed to set ourown rules?” Another type of race hefavours would be one for horses thathave not run under National Huntrules. “There are a few non-rulesMaiden Races, but what about non-rules Opens, or Hunter Chases?” heasks rhetorically.

Having tried (and failed!) to put theworld to rights as we look round theyard, an interesting-looking inmate ofthe corner stable catches my eye.“That’s Molly’s pony,” confirms Peter.“We got Thumper from CharlieLongsdon when his youngest childrengrew out of him.” So will there be athird generation Mason on the localPoint-to-Point courses in 2030? It maybe too early to tell, but she certainlyhas the right genes!

It is a rarity for three siblings to ride awinner on the same card, but Gina,Bridget and Jack Andrews achievedthe feat at Horseheath.

Jack kicked off in the Club Members’on Heads Or Tails, trained by hisfather Simon for Cliff Myers, and 35minutes later was followed by Bridget, who took the PPORA Members’ on

Mark Flinton’s See You Jack, from theFryer yard. Gina completed the treblein the Restricted on Remarkable Manfor handler James Owen.

Two other occasions in recent years inwhich a trio recorded a comparableachievement involved three of thefour Greenall brothers, Thomas, Tobyand Jake, who all scored at the

Middleton fixture in 2009, andrepeated the feat at Witton Castle thefollowing year.

The latter meeting may well havesealed its place in the sport’s history, because the Greenall three-timer wasmatched by a treble for the Dawsons, with Chris, John and Anna also ridinga winner apiece.

RECENT LANDMARKSJockeys firsts, doubles and other career highs by Carolyn Tanner

Will Biddick, who rode his 200thPoint-to-Point winner in February, reached another landmark at BishopsCourt, where he recorded his 250thcareer success on Earthpower, trainedby Jack Barber for Roger Penny, in theyoung horse Maiden Division Two.His tally was comprised of 207between the flags, 42 under NH rules, and one on the flat.

It was the first of five weekendvictories for the reigning champion, who is already 12 clear in this season’stitle race.

Hannah Lewis recorded her 50thsuccess between the flags when takingthe Members’ race at Garnons onCulpable Culprit, trained by DawnWoolf.

Hannah’s initial victory was on LordCastle at Whitwick in 2004, and shehas also ridden six Hunter Chasewinners, four of them at Statford’send-of-season meeting. Last year her

triumph in the AGA Ladies’ Final onUniversal Soldier also clinched thatcompany’s overall championship for2014.

30 minutes later she set off in pursuitof her next half-century by taking theLadies’ Open on Catspan.

Another former AGA champion,Claire Hart, who took the prize in2012, also reached 50, in her case acareer tally which includes eightsuccesses under Rules. She realised thetarget in the Ladies’ Open atCocklebarrow on the Richard Bandey-trained Little Chip.

Claire, who trains half a dozenPointers at her Cotswolds yard, opened her account on Lava atBrafield in 2005.

16-year-old Jack Andrews opened hisaccount at Horseheath on Heads OrTails for Cliff Myers.

It was the 23rd attempt for Jack, whoadmitted that the previous week hehad been in a “deep depression.” “Icould have ridden [Higham winner]Banksandditches,” he explained, “but Irode one for Nigel Padfield instead.”

Heads Or Tails was formerly withEdward O’Grady, and was picked outfrom a short list selected for theAndrews’ to try by Louise Cooper-Joyce. He is now ridden at home byJack’s mother Joanna, with whom Jackshares the training of the half dozenhorses in their yard near Luton, andon this occasion was led up by leadingNational Hunt jockey Harry Skelton, partner of Jack’s sister Bridget.

Emma Watson, 26, scored her initialvictory on Delphi Mountain in theMembers’ race at Bishops Court. AHurdles winner for RichardWoollacott, Delphi Mountain is nowtrained by Emma for her boyfriendChristopher Pike.

Bishops Court was also the venue forthe first success of JenniferDavenport, a veterinary surgeon at theModbury premises of South MoorVets. She won the Novice Riders’contest on her Mic’s Delight, a fivetimes winner under Rules, who was

bought privately from out of VictorDartnall’s yard

Jennifer, 33, made her debut atBuckfastleigh in 2014 on Chase Gate,on whom she had five rides.

26-year-old Cullompton farrier JackVeysey needed just two rides to makeit to the winner’s enclosure, landingthe Restricted on his own The DapperFox, who for good measure was alsoadjudged best turned out. Jack paidjust £1,300 at Ascot for the seven-

year-old, who was bred by Chris

Dawson’s Nunstainton Stud.

Jack’s background is in hunting and

team chasing, and he worked for threeyears for Martin Sweetland.
