I am delighted to welcome Ben Wheatley with our opening filmFree Fire - an action-packed and wonderfully funny feature thatwill celebrate our festival with the biggest possible bang.
Our programme is packed this year with Irish and EuropeanPremiere’s and I cannot recommend each film enough. There issomething there for everyone, with feature films coming fromIreland, UK, Denmark, Spain, USA, Armenia and indeed Kerry!
We also have our first ever Dingle Pow-Wow, which is bringingtogether industry leaders from Ireland and abroad to discusstheir careers. I extend a wholehearted welcome to the guestsfrom home and abroad to be with us for this incredible newevent.
We also have the special screening of four locally produced filmsfrom remarkable Dingle Women in Film. With stunning shots ofDingle peninsula and Dingle town, these films offer great insightinto the local talent which help make the Dingle IFF possible.
We are delighted to be presenting 24 feature films and 51 shortsfrom all over the world. We also have a special presentationshowing the winners of the short films submitted to this year’sDonal Walsh Live Life Competition.
Another new initiative, running right through the festivalweekend, ‘Meet the Filmmakers’ with the support of ScreenTraining Ireland gives audience members the opportunity tomeet and hear from the filmmakers themselves with eachfeature being introduced and followed with an insightful Q&Afrom the director and/or producers of the film.
The close relationship between the festival and our Gaeltachthometown is even stronger this year, along with the evergrowing Físín project we have, with the assistance of TheEuropean Parliament, given Irish subtitles to the oscarnominated French animated feature My Life as a Courgette.
11 years is a long time. We pride ourselves on outdoing ourprevious year, and building Dingle as the premiere location forthe international film industry. Thank you to our sponsors andfunders for your continued support, and a special thanks to ouraudience for coming out and enjoying our films - we do it all foryou!

Tá fás agus forbairt taghta ar Féile Idirnáisiúnta Scannán anDaingin ón am a bunaíodh í sa bhliain 2007, agus tá sí, sa lá atáinniu ann, ina dlúthchuid de fhéilire chultúrtha na hÉireann. Tá cáilidirnáisiúnta ar an Féile, agus bliain in ndiaidh bliana cuirtear fáilteroimh scannánóirí agus roimh bheochantóirí a thagann ón iasachtle páirt a ghlacadh san ócáid speisialta seo.
The Dingle International Film Festival has, since its establishmentin 2007, become a landmark event in Ireland’s cultural calendar. Its repute, of course, extends far beyond Irish shores, and everyyear Dingle plays host to filmmakers and animators who havetravelled from countries across the globe to participate in thisspecial event.
Here in Ireland we are enjoying a growing international reputationfor film making. We have a rich history associated with Irish filmand a talented and ever heroic film community who bravelyinnovate and push the boundaries as they create increasinglydiverse and exciting pieces of work. Initiatives like the DingleInternational Film Festival are critical to the nurturing of thecontinued production of such compelling and influential films. They not only allow for the showcasing of independently producedand brilliant work – from Ireland and from around the world – butalso challenge any erroneous assumption that the arts aresomething apart, peripheral, and belonging on the fringes ofsociety.
The provision, by a small but so vibrant town in West Kerry, of sucha significant platform for original, startling, thought-provoking,and even groundbreaking, film, reminds us of how the Arts thriveand grow when they are brought right into the heart of society, intothe space of the everyday.
Although an international event, the Dingle Festival remainsstrongly rooted in Irish soil and has been a vital and energisingforce in the creation of new films in our own vernacular. Theintroduction in 2011 of the Fisín prize, the first Irish language scriptcompetition, has encouraged many filmmakers to develop theirfilms in our beautiful national language, ensuring that it remains aliving source of inspiration for this and future generations, andfostering its ongoing relevance in an artistic environment thatcontinuously evolves and innovates.
It is also greatly inspiring to know that this year’s Festival will bepresenting screenings of four Irish films directed by talentedwomen through whose imagination we are introduced to thehistorical and cultural traditions of the Dingle community. UisceBeatha, Life is Short, Do Mharagadh Déanta, and A Tragedy in Kerry,do not just open a rich world for us; they also remind us of themany remarkable women working in the Irish film industry and theneed to embrace the many diverse voices and viewpoints whichmust comprise a truly inclusive artistic community.
Today, the Dingle International Film Festival attracts an impressiveroll call of widely acclaimed actors and filmmakers, who join themany enthusiastic film lovers who travel to Dingle annually to takepart in the imaginatively curated programme of events whichforms the heart of this Festival. As a nation we owe a great debt ofgratitude to those who work so hard to ensure the success, yearafter year, of this event, ensuring it remains true to its Irish rootswhile also growing its international dimension.
Mar Uachtarán na hÉireann is mian liom mo bhuíochas a chur iniúl le lucht eagraithe Féile Idirnáisiúnta Scannán an Daingin dágcuid dtiomantais do na scannáin áille, misniúla a chuirtear chuncinn anseo, scannáin a chothaíonn smaointe agus féidearthachtaínua sa lucht féachana. Is mian liom, chomh maith, buíochas aghabháil leis na cuairteoirí ar fad, idir Éireannaigh aguseachtrannaigh, a thugann tacaíocht d'Fhéile Idirnáisiúnta Scannánan Daingin agus a chuireann a gcuid rannpháirtíocht go mór lenadinimiceas agus lena tionchar.
As President of Ireland I would like to thank the organisers of theDingle International Film Festival for their dedication to thepromotion of the beautiful and courageous films which cause usto examine new thoughts and new possibilities. I also thank themany visitors, from home and abroad, whose support andparticipation are critical to the dynamism and influence of theDingle International Film Festival.

“Free Fire aims squarely for genre thrills, and hits its target repeatedly and with great gusto.”
DIRECTOR Ben WheatleyBen Wheatley is a director with unique visualflair and a darkly comic sense of humour. Withsix feature films in seven years, Wheatley isgoing from strength to strength in the filmindustry. From humble beginnings as ananimation creator online, his carefully edited
YouTube video, Cunning Stunt, hit over 10 million views andcatapulted him into viral fame. He began to direct advertisements forMoxie and the globally-operated Blink Productions. His sharpcreativity in directed the ‘AMBX’ viral for The Viral Factory won himthe Lion Award at the Cannes Advertising Festival in 2006. Thesepromotional videos, and successful stints at television shows, suchas Ideal (2009-2010), earned him the chance to direct for the bigscreen.
Wheatley’s first feature film, Down Terrace (2009), a distinctive crimecaper, was impressively shot in only eight days, and put Wheatley onthe radar of many top film producers. His next film Kill List (2011) was
an intense horror tour-de-force, and cemented Wheatley’s position asone of the most innovative new directors in British cinema. His otherdirectorial credits include the black comedy Sightseers (2012); astandout episode about vampires in the horror-comedy anthologyABC’s of Death (2013); the visceral A Field in England (2013); twothrilling episodes of Doctor Who (2014), starring Peter Capaldi; andthe ultra-stylised High-Rise (2015), a worthy adaptation of the J.G.Ballard novel.
He has justly received four award nominations for his films at theBritish Independent Film Awards. His latest film, Free Fire, is thebiggest and most audacious of his dynamic career.
The future is looking bright for Ben Wheatley, who is continuing toproduce higher standards of quality with every film. His dark Britishhumour and style is impossible to imitate, and any projects he has onthe horizon are sure to draw more attention and acclaim from theinternational film community.
