DESCRIPTION
The Go! Student Awards publication features winners of the SIAST Student Awards Program.TRANSCRIPT
Dear Donors:
The generosity of SIAST student supporters continues to help Saskatchewan young people achieve their career aspirations by easing their financial burdens. It also sends a strong message of encouragement that helps them rise to the challenges of a rigorous educational environment.
Last year, through the SIAST Student Awards Program, more than 1,000 students benefited from donor support. Friends, businesses, organizations, alumni and members of the SIAST community enabled SIAST to provide $1.3 million in scholarships, awards and bursaries to students in the 2009-10 academic year.
Your financial commitment is more than an investment in individual lives – it’s an investment in the future of the province. High-quality post-secondary education is crucial to Saskatchewan’s future, and we thank you for making an investment in that future.
In this report, you will hear from some of the students who were the appreciative recipients of your support and who represent the future of Saskatchewan. Please accept my sincere thanks on their behalf.
Dr. Robert G. McCulloch SIAST President and CEO

Do you ever wonder what kind of difference donor support can make in the life of a student? SIAST students tell you in their own words in this year’s Student Awards brochure. For many, a student award eases the financial strain of tuition and books. For others, especially those seeking to build a better future for their families, a student award helps make ends meet so they can focus on their studies.
Every student listed here has benefited from donor support. Without that support, many of these talented, determined people would not have the opportunity to learn the skills and gain the knowledge they need to build a career. And that would be a loss for all of us.
SIAST turns out more undergraduates than do either of Saskatchewan’s universities. Our programs serve every sector of the economy. We’re proud of our grads and the contributions they are making to communities all over the province. We’re equally proud to highlight the names of the generous donors who support our students. Their investment in SIAST students is an investment in our province’s future.
Our Association is committed to Building Homes, Building Communities and Building the Province. We value the quality of programming at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, Wascana Campus. SIAST graduates are essential to the capacity of our industry, the well-being of communities and the growth of the province. The future of the housing industry in Saskatchewan is very bright. Alan Thomarat, Chief Executive Officer Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan

Striving to do betterShyanne Parsons is finishing her final year in SIAST’s Early Childhood Education diploma program, and she’s eager to start her career working with young children. “I love working with children,” she says. “I love watching them learn and succeed. Student awards have helped Parsons achieve her goal. She received two awards: the Great West Life, London Life, Canada Life Bursary and the John & Helen Lockwood Entrance Bursary.
“Financially, the scholarships took away a lot of the stress of tuition and books,” she says. “But they also show students that high-school marks do count. I wanted to get good marks because I wanted to get a scholarship. Having scholarships available made me strive to do better so I could reach my goal.”
“ Winning the scholarships was a big accomplishment for me. It was good to know that people in the community care enough to donate.” Shyanne Parsons, second year, SIAST Early Childhood Education

Pierre Trudeau, Tommy Douglas, Kim Campbell, Robert Bourassa, Robert Stanfield and Gabrielle Roy are just some of the more than 50,000 people who have received a Governor General’s Academic Medal. The medal was first awarded in 1873 by the Earl of Dufferin, and it has since become one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive. SIAST is proud to recognize the outstanding academic performances of the following SIAST students, who were awarded Governor General’s Academic Medals in the 2009-2010 academic year.
Graduating with distinctionWhen Lyndon Lapierre graduated from SIAST’s Business Information Systems diploma program in 2010, he did so with distinction – a fact he credits, at least in part, to not having to balance work and school.
“The scholarships I received allowed me to go to school without needing to sacrifice valuable study time to work,” he says. Lapierre received several awards, including a Casino Moose Jaw Centennial Merit Scholarship, a Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) Bursary, a SaskPower Scholarship and a GDI Training and Employment Scholarship.
Lapierre has a short answer for anyone asking whether scholarships really make a difference: “Absolutely! So many people go to college every year, some with great potential that can be reached if they have the help they need. Scholarships let you focus on your studies and graduate your course in great standing, ready to enter the workforce.”
“ The scholarships I received helped immensely, and I hope donors continue to help SIAST college students.” Lyndon Lapierre, SIAST Business Information Systems graduate

Supporting the next generationHenderson Insurance Inc. and its predecessors have been serving the city of Moose Jaw since the early 1900s. Now in the second generation of its current ownership, the firm continues to offer personal and commercial insurance products to a wide range of individuals and businesses in Moose Jaw and Regina.
“We’re a growing company, and we want to do what we can to support the next generation of professionals in our industry,” says partner Dave Reidy. To that end, Henderson Insurance is supporting two Centennial Merit Scholarships: one for SIAST Business Financial Services students and one for SIAST Business Marketing students. The firm is also a sponsor of the SIAST Palliser Campus Business and Industry Dinner.
“Hopefully, the scholarships will allow students to focus on their studies rather than on part-time jobs. We also want to encourage students to broaden their business mindset to include careers in the insurance and brokerage industry,” Reidy says. “It’s a great career choice for people who are interested in helping others, because your work helps other businesses grow.”
“ The SIAST experience gives graduates a good mix of theory and practical, so they are able to hit the ground running.” Dave Reidy, Henderson Insurance Inc.

The Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan is working to address the growing demand for skilled labour in Saskatchewan. Alan Thomarat, Chief Executive Officer Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Saskatchewan
Lowering the stress levelSIAST’s Electronic Systems Engineering Technology program is an intense two-year program of study. Classes and labs extend throughout the day, and students are expected to invest their own time in after-class study. With this kind of schedule, holding down a part-time job isn’t always possible. And that’s why SIAST student awards are so important to students like Ryan Goeres.
“I received an Enbridge Inc. Bursary in my second year that relieved some of the financial stress of going to school so I could focus on school work,” Goeres says. “Mostly, it helped me pay for my final project, which was out of my own pocket.”
Class projects are an important component of many SIAST programs. Each project is a chance for students to apply what they’ve learned to a real project and begin making the transition from class to real world.
“Scholarships like this are important. Some of us need help with the costly expenses of post-secondary education,” Goeres says. “Basically, scholarships help students succeed!”
“ Student awards help lower the stress level of worrying how the bills are going to be paid.” Ryan Goeres, SIAST Electronic Systems Engineering Technology graduate

Diverse opportunities in a growing industry By supporting SIAST student awards, the Regina & Region Home Builders’ Association (RRHBA) is investing in the future – not only of the home-building industry, but of the province as a whole.

The residential construction industry provides great opportunity for diverse, qualified, accomplished and ambitious people.”
The RRHBA supports awards for students enrolled in applied certificate or certificate carpentry programs and the Architectural Building Technology diploma program at SIAST. The annual scholarship program includes four Centennial Merit Scholarships, four bursaries, four achievement awards and three graduate awards.
“Through these scholarships, we can support individuals as they build successful, sustainable careers in the industry, while also continuing to ensure the high quality of housing for individuals and families in our community,” Niebergall says.

The Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses (SALPN) wishes to congratulate all 2009-2010 award recipients, including the winners of the SALPN awards. A well-earned ‘pat on the back’A past chair of the SIAST board of directors, Christine Boyczuk believes “SIAST is Saskatchewan’s best-kept secret in terms of the opportunities available both to young people and to others returning to school. As a board member, I had the opportunity to observe the dedication of staff and management to making SIAST an excellent learning institution, one that is second to none in Canada.”
Boyczuk has demonstrated her support by personally sponsoring a variety of student awards through the years. Recently, she created an award especially for members of the SIAST Palliser Campus Students’ Association executive.
“Students on the executive of the student association often do triple duty – school, part-time job and executive. I think they should be recognized for the dedication they show in contributing to the quality of life on campus.”
She says the award is a “‘pat on the back’” that could also encourage others to get involved in the student association. “The benefits of getting involved are many, but most important, the experience contributes to participants’ development as leaders, team players and contributors,” Boyczuk says.

Scholarship helps make ends meetMonica Bouvier is in her final year of the Practical Nursing diploma program at SIAST Kelsey Campus and is looking forward to moving into the workforce. “I was already working in the health care field before I started this program,” she says. “I was an emergency medical responder in Ile-a-la-Crosse. I’ve always enjoyed helping people; now my education will help me make more of a difference.”
Small class sizes, an emphasis on hands-on learning and instructors who care about their students were all factors in Bouvier’s decision to enrol at SIAST. “I just knew SIAST would give me a quality education,” she says.
In her first year, Bouvier earned a Centennial Merit Scholarship. “I’m a single mom with two kids, so it’s sometimes hard to make ends meet. The scholarship took some of the burden off.”
As graduation day approaches, the future is looking bright for Bouvier and her children. “This is what I want to do,” she says.
“ The Centennial Merit Scholarship helped me achieve my goal.” Monica Bouvier, SIAST Practical Nursing program

Being a good corporate citizenOver the 40-plus years that Western Dodge has been serving Moose Jaw and area, it has retained its easygoing atmosphere and its reputation for excellent customer service. “We’re proud of our commitment to customers and our ability to provide exceptional service,” says Vaughn Taylor, Western Dodge’s service and body shop manager. “It takes skilled people to deliver that level of service.”
Commitment to customers is why Western Dodge sponsors two Centennial Merit Scholarships, one for students in SIAST’s Automotive Service Technician certificate program and one for students in SIAST’s Auto Body Technician certificate program.
“We do as much as we can to support SIAST,” Taylor says, noting the dealership also supports the annual Business and Industry Dinner at SIAST Palliser Campus. “By sponsoring the student awards, we hope to encourage more young people to recognize the opportunities in automotive service and auto body repair trades. It’s not just about supporting the trade; it’s about being a good corporate citizen.”
“ Every student we’ve sponsored through a SIAST scholarship, we’ve hired – and kept them here.” Vaughn Taylor, Western Dodge, Moose Jaw
Crown Investments Corporation (CIC) is the holding company for the province’s commercial Crown corporations. Its focus on Saskatchewan’s economic success was a driving factor in the creation of the CIC Aboriginal Bursary Program. The Honourable Tim McMillan, Minister Responsible for CIC, says, “With programs such as our CIC Aboriginal Bursary, we hope to see more Aboriginal students graduate and experience further career opportunities opening up to them, possibly in the Crown or government sector. We hope the bursary will help provide the boost they need to achieve success in their program of choice.” Between 2009 and 2013, the CIC Aboriginal Bursary Program is offering up to 20 bursaries a year to students at several post-secondary institutions, including SIAST. Aboriginal students can apply for a CIC bursary to help them pursue business, trade or technology programs at SIAST.
Scholarships help Aboriginal students succeed
“ The younger Aboriginal demographic continues to grow in Saskatchewan. We see great potential with these numbers,” McMillan says. “It’s in the province’s best interests to ensure Aboriginal people develop the necessary skills and training to participate in the workforce.”
Centennial Merit Scholarships In 2000, the Government of Saskatchewan established the Centennial Merit Scholarship (CMS) program. Through the Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration (AEEI), the provincial government matches every dollar that is donated in support of CMS scholarships at SIAST.
Centennial Merit Scholarships are awarded annually to full-time students who are Saskatchewan residents and enrolled in a program 20 weeks or more in length. Selection criterion is 100% academic achievement. The scholarships are valued at $2,500 for diploma programs and $1,500 for certificate and eligible applied certificate programs.
Since the program began, almost $4 million in Centennial Merit Scholarships have been awarded to SIAST students.

Nurturing Saskatchewan nursesThe mission of the Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses (SALPN) is an important one: to ensure that LPNs practising in the province serve society by providing professional nursing care.
In support of this mission, the association annually awards eight individual bursaries to Practical Nursing students enrolled at SIAST’s Wascana, Kelsey or Woodland campuses, or in a program brokered through SIAST at a Saskatchewan regional college. Recipients are judged not only on academic success, but also on clinical performance, interaction with clients and family, community or school involvement and leadership skills.
But there’s one more thing.
“One of our stipulations is that Saskatchewan graduates must intend to stay living and working in the province,” says Cara Brewster, LPN, registrar of SALPN.
“ Our hope is that by awarding these bursaries, we will assist to alleviate some financial hardship for our future members as they begin their careers as practical nurses.” Cara Brewster, LPN, Registrar, Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses
