{ Roasted Beet Salad } “Recreating restaurant favorites using local, seasonal ingredients make dining in as sexy as dining out. { Thrift and Consignment } Shopping T ipsKeep a running list of wants & needs. Racks of clothing to sort through can be overwhelming. Begin with a specific item in mind and you’ll find what you’re looking for much faster.

Buy only what you love. If it’s not worth full price then it’s probably not worth the reduced price either. Buy because you absolutely love something.

If in doubt, don’t. If your fussing with the fit in the dressing room it won’t be any better when you get home.

Keep an open mind. I once bought a twill suit because I loved the jacket with jeans and turned the slacks into shorts for summer. These are also great shops to find killer deals on out of season items.

Collector good, hoarder bad. Your home is not an orphanage for the island of misfit things. Shop for only one or two collections at a time.

Inspect your merch before your buy. Nothing is a bigger bummer than getting home and finding a flaw. Fine fabrics like knit jersey and sweaters are prone to pinholes and snags. Most stores are “All Sales Final” so give each piece a once over before buying.

It’s ok to not find a “find”. Sometimes it seems your consignment credit is calling your name. It’s like free money, don’t waste it. Save up for a gorgeous pair of boots or designer bag instead. Also, refer to collector good, hoarder bad. Do you really need another vintage birdcage?

{ Farmers Market Tips } “Eat and serve what’s in season, for maximum flavor and value, and know availability does not equal quality.”–Mireille Guiliano, www.frenchwomendontgetfat.com

“Tremendous pleasure comes from knowing the food you eat was grown in local soil. That the honey in your tea comes from bees pollinating Sonoran desert flowers. That your eggs come from happy chickens nearby.” -Lily

Arrive early for eggs & first pick of produce. Eggs often sell out quickly. If you plan to return, ask the seller if you should bring the cartons back on your next visit.

Arrive late for deals. Often vendors will reduce their prices at the end of the market rather than packing them back up again.

Bring shopping bags. Bring a market basket or bags with you. Not all vendors have take-away bags, plus it’s better for the environment.

Take small bills and a pocket of silver. Big bills are a pain for sellers and exact change make transactions go faster especially in a busy market. Most items are priced that nickels and dimes should do you.

Take a list. It is easy to overbuy or be overwhelmed with a big, beautiful selection of produce to choose from. Have a rough idea of what you plan to cook ahead of time.

The Hepburn The Hepburn is a cocktail of my own creation in homageto Audrey and Kate. It is simple and fresh with a little bite. It is equally delicious when made without gin and served as a refreshing soda.

• 2 ounces gin • wedge of fresh lime• ice• 2-3 mint leaves (optional)• 1 tsp. Ginger-Honey• club soda

Directions:

for Ginger-Honey*in a small clean jelly jar add 2 tblsp. minced fresh gingerfill to the top with honey (preferably local, desert, organic)replace and secure lid to jarin a few minutes the ginger will begin to rise to the top, infusing the honey with ginger flavor

for Hepburnin a low ball glass, pour gin over iceadd squeeze of a lime wedge fill with soda stir in a tsp. of Ginger-Honey add mint leaves

*Ginger-Honey is divine in tea, on toast or greek yogurt or as a sweet alternative to maple syrup on pancakes and waffles.

Yoga Mat Mist (makes 8oz)

• 1/2 cup witch hazel or grain alcohol• 1/2 cup distilled water• 5 drops tea tree essential oil • 5 drops lemon essential oil

Directions:

Funnel witch hazel or alcohol and distilled water into an 8oz spray bottle. Add your essential oils and shake each time before use. Spray generously onto yoga mat and wipe off.

The essential oils act to disinfect, as does the alcohol. Witch hazel is distilled in alcohol so using it will decrease the amount of alcohol in your solution but will not eliminate it. Everclear is a good source of grain alcohol. You can use vodka as well but it will be slightly more diluted. If you have a lot of build up on your mat to begin with make a gentle soapy solution to wash your mat, rinse and leave it out to dry over night before starting to use the mist.

Yoga Mat Mist graciously provided by Strawberry Hedgehog, local maker of Specialty Handmade Vegan Bath & Body Products.
