What was Early Earth like?...BAD!!!

Atmosphere:Methane, CO2, water, nitrogen, hydrogen, etc.

No OXYGEN!

Page 4: Goal 3.05b: Origins and History of Life

Miller and Urey experiment showed that life could have formed out of the simple compounds present during early Earth.

Proteinoid Microsphere = structure similar to cells

Semipermeable

membrane

Energy Storage!

No DNA or RNA, so NOT cells.

May have evolved into

cells.

!

Ozone

Ozone layer trapped theOxygen from photosynthesis and created a new kind of atmosphere.

Many organisms could not adapt to oxygenated air and went extinct. Others evolved into oxygen breathing species.

FYI…This is the hole in our Ozone now. Will we have to evolve or go extinct?

Prokaryotic organisms appeared about 2 billion years ago.

ENDOSYMBIONT TheorySome prokaryotic cells began evolving

internal cell membranes.

Result = primitive eukaryotic cell.

Some prokaryotic cells entered the eukaryotic cells and developed a

symbiotic relationship with the eukaryotic cell.

The inner prokaryotic cells evolved into cell organelles.

Endosymbiont Theory

Sexual Reproduction brought about variation and evolution into modern cells.

Tape both of your thumbs to your hands like this…

Perform the following activities as instructed using the materials provided:

1. Open the jar and pour the contents onto your desk.

2. Pick up the penny and place it inside the ziplock bag. Close the bag.

3. Stick the tack into the cardboard then remove it.

4. Write your name in the center of the paper.

5. Now cut your name out of the paper.

6. Paperclip the cut piece of paper (with your name) to the remaining piece of paper.

7. Staple the paper-clipped papers to a sheet of notebook paper.

8. Remove the paperclip and place the stapled papers into the homework box. This will insure you receive an activity grade.

9. Open the door to the work room then close it back gently.

10. Place the tack, the penny and the paper clip into the plastic jar and close it.

You may need a partner to help you tape your thumbs.
