Goalkeeper Psychology
In this post from our blog we will talk about the psychology of football goalkeeper.
The information that will be give then can be related to any other sport keeper, but
we'll focus on football because we dominate this sport.
First we will talk about the formation stage.
When most children dream that
they will score the goal that
gives the victory to his team, we
have others who dream of
stopping the ball. This makes
from the beginning, these
children who choose to be a
goalkeepers are developed both physically and psychologically differently than that of
their peers.
Like physical needs are not the same as outfield players, the psychological needs
neither.
With these characteristics,
children grow and integrate
ideas in their heads.
Once they reach the senior
stage, either performance or
not, the mentality of those who
have been goalkeepers from
youth has specific
characteristics in all of them.
We should also mention that personality that has is influenced by this situation.
As characteristics we have:
- Independence.
- Self-confidence.
- Dare.
- Mental strength.
- Ability to excel.
- Decision.
- And of course, a touch of madness.
All these features have an explanation:
When you're a goalkeeper, you have the need to confront situations in which your
mental capacity is pushed to the limit, and where you have to learn to trust yourself
before anyone.
During a match, a general rule, the gatekeepers perform few actions, and must always
do well. Otherwise, an error becomes a goal. This pressure causes the goalkeeper have
to be concentrated along the match to act in a proper way in an action that lasts a few
seconds.
If the action is successful, you can’t think about it because during the game you will
have to re-act and will have to perform it correctly.
If the action is incorrect you can't think about it because this thought will create
insecurity to cope with the next action.
This makes goalkeepers have to escape quickly from events occurring and concentrate
on the present and the moment, without thinking of anything else.
Along with these features
we have to comment that
the position of the
goalkeeper is difficult in
itself, since all teams
usually have two or three
goalkeepers, and always
seems to play one of
them.
Those who do not play have to live and work with peers who play in place. This makes
the climate of coexistence has to be the most suitable to carry out its function.
All these features mean that these athletes are made of a special paste.
Focusing on the psychology of the athlete, the sports psychologist has to perform a
very important role in this situation because you have to guide the goalkeepers to
make the best possible use of their work and function, without focusing outside this
stuff.
